The experienced videogame documentary-filmmakers at Artifact Studios -- best known for their behind-the-scenes commissions that pad out collector's editions of some of the hottest games -- have flexed their industry connections in a rather neat new project titled CRITICAL///PATH.

Described as a "panoramic overview of the contemporary state of the videogame medium", The Critical Path website offers dozens of bite-sized interviews with many of the games-industry's most respected and experienced developers, who share their authoritative thoughts on topics of all facets of creating and consuming videogames.

To give you an idea of the substance on offer, here's a list of the developers currently included in the project:
Stig Asmussen, Cliff Bleszinski, Ian Bogost, Nolan Bushnell, David Cage, John Carmack, Jenova Chen and Kellee Santiago, Denis Dyack, Toby Gard, Richard Garriott, Chris Hecker, Richard Hilleman, Clint Hocking, Todd Howard, Rod Humble, Toru Iwatani, David Jones, Hideo Kojima, Raph Koster, Frank Lantz, Ken Levine, David Littman, Jordan Mechner, Sid Meier, Peter Molyneux, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, Yoshinori Ono, Rob Pardo, Rhianna Pratchett, Jason Rohrer, Tim Schafer, Warren Spector, Joseph Staten, Will Wright, and Susan Wu
You can watch a trailer promoting the project below here in HD, but not all the content on the site is as broad as the trailer suggests. There are plenty of interesting little snippets on topics both big and small, right down to stuff like John Carmack's view on the merits of first person versus third person, Warren Spector's feelings on choice and consequence, and Todd Howard's thoughts on character customisation.

Critical Path promises to be a "multi-format" project, and a complete documentary film has been promised as a part of that. Head over to criticalpathproject.com for the full spread, and be prepared to sink a few hours getting informed.

Looks like they brought together a lot of amazing people for this, will have to watch it all sometime*.

*One of those things which I think would be great, but will probably never get around to.

Yeah I'm going to criticize their design for giving me too many options, I just want a simple start to finish video dagnaggit.
