Hitting a button to have your computer show up on TV?

Does anyone have a setup where they can be looking at something on their computer and shout "On screen!" and hit a button and whatever is on their computer pops up on the TV?

I want that.

Say I'm watching YouTube, and there are people in my living room I can go "hey check this out" and don't have to spin my monitor around or have them come round to my special area.

Can connect cable directly from computer to TV, I'd say it could be a 7 or 8 metre run including going up and down through the wall cavity.

So you might answer: Connect a cable from second video card hole or get an extra video card, and run a cable to the back of the tv, but here's the thing, switching from TV or HTPC to another input takes like 4 clicks on the remote control. Fuck that, and fuck you for suggesting it. I want to press one button so it's awesome. Then again I have a Samsung TV, and there might be better TVs out there where this is easier... is that so?

Another answer could be to get one of those switch things like the one that came with the Sega Master System II... but then I figure since the other two main inputs for the TV are right near the TV, too many cables are going to have to run back from the TV to my computer, what a stuff around.

Which one of you has this worked out.

Without sounding like a fanboi, AppleTV can do this if. You can send media from iPad, iPhone, MBP, etc to your ATV.

Get a Logitech Harmony remote, and set up a programmable button to switch to the exact input needed.

What you want is Intel Wireless Display (WiDi).

It's available in many high-end Ultrabooks, including my Samsung Series 9.

i can't think of any 'one button' solution because you have to change the input on you tv to get the pc signal.

so if your watching tv on hdmi1 for example then your pc is probably hdmi2 or something.

seems hard to do

Not exactly what you're thinking but any video or picture stored on my tablet or NAS, can be redirected to the TV via my tablet. I just click the "play to" button and select the TV instead of the tablet and it plays on the TV.

It's easy to do if you have a harmony remote and a remote controller for your PC. I got an ir receiver with my TV card that lets you do all sorts of stuff with windows, that has nothing to do with watching TV. Combine that with a harmony remote and you should be able to hit the "watch PC" activity button on the harmony and have it do almost what the OP wants.

Can't test that theory because I lost the IR receiver :p

It takes one click on a harmony remote like others and myself suggested.

I have a xbmc running on an old laptop connected via hdmi to my tv.

I can send youtube vids to xbmc through my android phone by pressing share up the top. xbmc also scans my main shared hdd for video/music/pics so it's all there.

I control xbmc with my android phone xbmc remote app

yeah i have a Harmony One, i thought he was referring to a one click PC key.

you can program a Harmony for almost anything but i pictured thermite wanting to control the input while someone else is watching tv and switch to his pc screen because he found a great granny porn site.

this in itself represents a problem because what if they are in the middle of something on tv and all of a sudden thermites porn pops up?

Well I can do that too, interrupt the TV to show someone some tranny porn. It's nothing to do with my PC though and all to do with the "MyNet" app on my Asus tablet (mentioned in my previous post).

I don't quite know how it works, but I'd love the same functionality for my PC + TV. It only works for locally stored media though, not for youtube. Could always nab the YT video, store it locally and play it that way if you're desperate.

I'm thinking the only real way to do what termite wants would be if the hardware all supported that wireless display thing raven mentioned.

Say I'm lying on the couch and I see something sweet on my phone using chrome, I'll save it to bookmarks, turn the tv on with my logitech remote with an activity setting that will turn the tv, amp and wake the computer, set the tv to the correct hdmi input, make the computer open win+p and select 'extend' and then I use my phone using Microsoft Mayhem to open the bookmark.

You need a TV with wifi. Most TV's with wifi have smart phone apps that give you greater control than the standard remote.

I've actually just temp setup my own PC to do what you are talking about so I can switch to my PC whenever with a 15m HDMI cable (that I plan on running through the walls into a wall plate but at the moment just run along the ground). My TV remote can switch to HDMI with one magical button called "HDMI", switching back to regular TV isn't so easy.

I'm buying a cheap Android tablet to control the PC via wifi, at the moment I'm using a free logitech app for iphone that converts it to a wifi mouse/touchpad. If my tele had wifi I'd be set but I still have to use ye old remote to switch the thing on.

You connect that via cable or wireless?

That's cabled, i put cables in all the walls with a mini data cabinet where the adsl/cable modem resides and a couple AP's for upstairs and downstairs. The termination is at the same point as upstairs has power and cable and aerial all terminated neatly with faceplates so cable was better.

Not even sure the device can do wireless, but these days sony products i'm sure do.

I have my TV situated right next to my pc in my room. I have a HDMI cable that runs between my pc and Tv.
My TV's remote has the ability to assign certain "one click" setups onto four buttons. (red green blue yellow)
I set Hdmi2 (my pc ) to blue. when I hit the blue button. bam.

I have the same thing setup on our tv in the lounge. It has an media pc with he same setup.

Save bookmark in chrome on phone/pc/other viewing device.

Hit the chrome button on google tv remote or other tv with chrome 'widget'.

Open bookmark.

Try out Microsoft's Mayhem Remote, a customisable GUI that you can assign many things to, it is a really handy tool.
Mayhem is an application that lets you connect trigger events to reactions. Unlike writing a program, you simply select an event and a reaction, and then turn on the connection. Voila! No code or app required.

For my TV in my room its a perfect setup.
With the TV in the lounge, the Media PC is actually next tot he subwoofer in the corner.
I ran a HDMI port through the wall, int he roof and back down behind the tv.
Also have a RJ45 and TV socket too.
