I watched this for the first time, with my Mum the other day. It has a very high rating (8.9) on IMDb and with good reason. It is based on the true story of Oskar Schindler, a Nazi businessman who saved Jews during WWII.
One of the greatest things about the DVD we watched is that it features interviews with the real Jews who were saved by him. The things they talk about the Nazis doing to them are much worse than what was depicted in the movie. But the film is still so brutal, we had to pause it frequently because Mum was having trouble dealing with it. The fact that it is based on real events is what makes it so traumatic.
Because it is based on such an important period (and relatively recent) of history and done oh so well, everyone should see this movie. The acting is fantastic and it is directed by Steven Spielberg. If you haven't seen it I urge you to rent or buy it immediately. Just don't view it if you are already in a bad mood.
...I'm really in to movies and it was my first time.
Not many people tend to go for B&W war films.
Really Dais?
Surely you troll...
Creepier still is that I was thinking about this movie just yesterday... I was standing in a 'Schindler Lift' and couldn't help but wonder if there is a connection...
Wars/genocides in Europe early last century were exagerated by victims and covered up by the aggressors. Genocides were Europes specialty and they were all guilty of commiting them.
Hollywoods reimagining of WW2 should not be taken as historical fact.
Hollywoods version of WW2 is heavily influenced by Jews.
Millions of Germans were starved to death at the end of WW2 after being subjected to horrific bombing attacks on their civillians.
Check out Churchills own genocide of Indians.

Armenians
The Ukraine Famine.
Why doesnt Hollywood make movies about that ?
Europe needed Hitler and the Nazis to protect them from the Communists.
What happened after WW2 is what would have happened to all of Europe without Hitler. All of Europe was responsible for The Nazis.
I haven't seen it, nor do I plan to. Don't much care for war movies. My dad was always watching war stuff, people killing each other, wildlife documentaries with animals eating each other, violent shit everywhere. Why the hell would you want to constantly watch shit like that unless you're one sick motherfucker? (him, not you)
Probably because it is based on reality and a fact of life. My Mum prefers watching real stuff as well.
Not all real stuff, just war shit. Documentaries on war, "true" movies about wars, war, war, war. Couldn't get enough watching people killing each other.
Faceman again proves how much of a total fuckhead fruitcake he is. Good work Faceman you've left no one in doubt now.
If Faceman had been in WW2 I'm sure he would have volunteered to be a proud Nazi Concentration Camp guard or one of the Jews ratting on everyone else, cause you know, they were all conspiring against him and also cause he's a total knob.
BOT - Dais, good to see you watched the movie. I remember seeing it when it first came out. I was very moved.

because nothing exposes the human condition and the fraility of man like a good war fillum. a classic example is the brilliant deer hunter.
It's such an awesome movie. The only crappy thing about the DVD copy is you have to switch disc's half way thru. Well, with my copy anyway. A bluray version would kick some serious ass.

It's not really a war movie, despite being set during the war and in a prison camp.
Schindler's List is an awesome fucking movie. I saw it when it originally came out on VHS (lolz VHS) and it was one of the first movies that showed me that films can have a deep emotional impact on people. The first was Forrest Gump but Schindler's List had a much harder edge to it for obvious reasons.
I don't watch movies like this to enjoy the people being shot in the head by the SS. The reason that sort of thing is added is to assist in caring about the characters in the movie. I love the way the film sort of follows a small bunch of them throughout the movie. The summary executions of various people throughout the movie make you fear for the familiar character's lives. The first time I saw it I was constantly fearful that the main characters could die at any time.
It was also disturbing how you slowly saw character's dignity stripped away as the movie progressed. In the opening scene where all the jews are in a line having to register with the German occupation, you see a rabbi with a full beard and proud, defiant face giving his name. This is the same man you see cowering under Amon after the hinge seen, a double pistol failure saving his life.
The main theme of the movie is the power of humanity though I reckon. Oskar Schindler bribes some senior German officials with basic items such as chocolate and citrus fruits in order to secure a work contract that blatantly uses the jews as slave labour. It seems in war that basic luxury items become very valuable, and the only thing that becomes cheap is human life. The psychopathic actions of Amon cause Schindler to see something dark about himself and the situation he is in causing him to take great steps to rectify it. I think the pivotal scene for Schindler's reckoning is when he hoses down the cars. You can even see it in the Germans' faces as they realise what is happening.
An absolute classic movie that should be shown to every high schooler. Spielberg's finest three hours.
Perhaps they could teach what really happened rather than a fantasy.
Schindler did not become a list-maker, an apparent ally of Jews, until after the battle of Stalingrad, the turning point of World War II, when every thinking German knew defeat was at hand. Schindler did not begin to act in earnest until matters were even more desperate for the Nazis, mid-1944, after Nazi Field-Marshall Rommel had committed suicide. At war's end, Schindler, disguised as a concentration camp victim and accompanied by friends, fled west--as did many war criminals--fearing arrest by the Soviets. He continued his dissolute womanizing alcoholic life, made yearly trips to Israel to collect accolades and demand money, and died in 1974. At least some of "his" Jews felt the loss of another Nazi was no loss at all.
Most teachers and US citizens do not know the film was banned in much of the Middle East and repeatedly attacked in Israel, or that the maker of the profound film, "Shoah," denounced both Spielberg and his movie. "Shoah's," Claude Lanzmann believes Spielberg deliberately misportrays the Shoah, the repetition of which Lanzmann feels is a just question of time. Shoah experts who left Spielberg's fold during filming indicate that Spielberg was obsessed with creating a relatively happy ending, and when they resisted his view, they were removed
The fact is he spent all his money on saving these people, when he could have spent it on ensuring his escape. He could have fled much earlier with his fortune if he didn't care about the Jews.
Noone is denying that he went there to exploit them. But as has been suggested his attitude toward them changed as he became aware of what was happening.
gitmo? i googled it, but couldnt find anything. gee isnt this most obvious? ironic if it is that.
You must suck at the googles
Oh its military slang. I was looking for an acronym. Seems to be more pages on why it shouldnt be short for Guantanamo Bay than there is saying it's short for said bay.
There is no doubt that Spielberg would have cast Schindler in a far more sympathetic light than what he would have been in real life though for storytelling reasons.
If you watched this movie and thought that it would have been 100% what happened in real life you'd be bit silly.
edit: knowing Faceman is a holocaust denier this
is so fucking sweet. I've said it before, but skipping past his posts is like sidestepping a dump truck full of dumb. Do try it.
