Recommend me: Gardener

Recently bought and moved into a house. House is on an 850 m2 block and having come from an inner city unit I don't have lawnmower etc. Don't have the time for the next few weeks to buy one, but the yard is in serious need of a mow, and there are some bushes/shruberry etc that need carting away (they've already been pulled out). Anyone know someone they'd be happy to recommend?

Coming up next time, recommend me a lawnmower...

A number of petrol stations have lawn mowers you can rent.

Get a lawnmower, get a line trimmer, get a mulcher.

I've been through this. Hiring a guy takes weeks and costs about half as much as buying a brand new top of the line mower.

Not worth it.

I'd be hitting up a friend to borrow their mower if possible first, if not there are plenty of gardeners around, and some even show up! Hit up the local corner store fridge/notice board.

Seriously, $100 2 stroke whipper-snipper from Bunnings and a $300 lawn-mower is a better option IMO.

so as a follow up, eventually went down the random-number-from-noticeboard-at-local-supermarket route and old mate came out and quoted 60 cash or 50 if I make it a regular deal... you kidding me!? don't need to research /find /buy a mower then waste half a day mowing when I have so much other shit to do... said yes, he came out with his ride on, mower and snipper and had it done in about 90 minutes .... pretty happy

Half a day mowing, eh?

Must be a pretty nice bit of property you're on there. Probably quite a bit larger than the 850 m^2 you've mentioned if it takes half a day to cut the grass.

Depends how long he let the grass get :P

Fair point, half a day is probably a bit ott, but the property is not completely flat, has some awkward sections and by the time I factor in doing something with all the cut grass (assuming it's not mulching and being left on the lawn), trimming, armortised time spent on fueling/maintenance etc it will definitely start at something closer to 3 hoursish and lessen as I get more proficient. Factor in offset rate of ~6% currently and the fact that it's winter and it won't need mowing all that often and $60 seems like a winner. For the next month or so after moving in every hour counts.. child proofing, unpacking yadda yadda.. don't have time for that during the week. Stand by my sentiment.

Mate bought a ride-on mower, not a giant one just a little baby one for around 850 from a mower specialist distributor.. Bit expensive but considering the time wasted mowing, you might aswell enjoy it. Plus if you remove the safety (seat switch) you can jump off and pick shit up off the lawn and let the mower ride itself.

Though i don't really recommend that.

I quite enjoy mowing, gets you out in the sun and you can take pride in your nice lawn.

I pay a house cleaner though, as I don't find house cleaning fun.

Yeah, i wasnt a fan at the start cause i was bad and inefficient but after a while ive started to enjoy it. Dislike using whipper snipper as the back arching kills after a short while. Makes me happy to have a better lawn than the lazy fuckers on the street.

Whatever you do, don't get a cheap line trimmer of the electric type.

Worst and most ineffective invention ever.

^ They're not that bad if you only have a small amount to do.

While I personally wouldn't buy one, I was given an old second hand one and it does the job - we only have a few small edges to do though. The best bit is it's easy to start! Worst bit is the winding up the extension cord :(

They have their place, just not on big jobs.

If you can do all you need to do without changing the plug it will do the job, if you have to change the plug (even moving it from front yard to back) you are using a fork to eat soup (not a spork).

If it's a hearty soup a fork is ok.

Any liquid left at the end can be consumed by drinking from the bowl.
