Best way to make home media accessible through a web browser

Ok, so the problem to be solved is I have an android tablet (with a flash supporting web browser on it), and I want something that lets me serve up videos that I have on my PC or media box and make them viewable via the web browser on the tablet.

The reason it needs to be done via a web browser is cos the tablet is built into a treadmill that my brother owns, and has no access to install new apps on it, so we need to work with whats already on there. Its pretty sweet, you can web browse, watch youtube, etc while on the treadmill, but it'd be even more awesome if I could watch stuff that is on my PC, on the treadmill.

Haven't had any luck finding a software solution for it, and the best hardware solution I've found is the Hauppauge Broadway, which actually does sound pretty damn awesome, lets you serve up media from anything you plug into it to clients via web browser. A lot of the hardware solutions for streaming stuff over the net involve installing a client app on whatever you want to view it with, and thats not possible, but the Broadway is the only one I've found that does it through a web browser. I'm yet to find any stores nearby that actually sell it though.

Anyone got any suggestions for solutions or alternatives? Some software that could serve videos from my PC and make them viewable through a web browser would be a good start, something hardware like the Broadway is good too though cos that'd do Foxtel and TV as well.

You'd have to re encode to specific formats but jwplayer is what ausgamers use (or used to use?) http://www.longtailvideo.com/

Although it might require you to also set up a web server on your PC, apache is a piece of piss and it's what I used when I was dicking about with jwplayer at home.

I know this isn't what you asked, but why exactly can't you put new apps on it? What's stopping you from accessing the Market?

you should be able to watch through a browser with orb live installed on the media server through this website after you have set it up. It can take some time to populate your library though.

There's a thought, can you browse to: https://play.google.com/store?hl=en on the tablet? Or even on a PC. I can browse that store on my PC, hit the install button and it'll automagically install the apps on my phone or tablet without me having to even touch the phone or tablet. I'm guessing that only works if your tablet is signed in to your google account but since there's a lack of distinct information about what the tablet IS capable of, might be worth a try.

Nah, plex needs an app, I already checked that out

No market app on the tablet, and theres no access to the normal android screen that lets you start apps. As soon as the treadmill boots up, it boots into its own custom sort of desktop manager thing, which just has buttons for doing treadmill stuff, and a button to open the web browser.

So even if you could install an app (by downloading the IPK via the web) there's no way to launch it?

I have a friend who had this same sort of issue. What he did to resolve it was quite complicated so I'll try and explain what he did as best as I can.

1. Move the treadmill in front of the TV

Quick question - Are you streaming your media over your home nework? ie your tab is on your wifi network?

Because if it is, then there's a really simple way of doing it dude.

Tversity

I use it at the moment to stream to my Veolo (Android based Media player), Ipad , Iphone, laptop etc etc.
I make sure my router locks the ip for my media server PC and changed the port forwarding to suit the tversity port.
Then open browser in my android device (Veolo)
enter the ip/port for my media pc ie: http: 192.168.1.105:41942
Tversity web based browser appears and i cycle through the folders till find what i want to watch,
File plays though installed media player of choice.

See how you go mate, but if you are doing it over your home network, this works epic for me. I was racking my brains trying to figure out other media servers / file sharing and getting them to work on my veolo but this has been the best so far and the only one that has worked.

I had to upgrade to pro to get the IOS platofrms streaming but i'm pretty sure the stock free version supports android.
Also i had problems when i updated to the latest version of tversity. For some reason it was stuttering and being a real cnt. Rolled back and haven't had a problem since.

Hey Khel,

Does your tablet have skype? Use something like Xsplit and one way video call yourself, screen capturing your running movie.

Else doesn't VLC offer options for streaming media to the web? Point web browser URL at VLC's stream and win?

Edit: Tversity and PS3Media player both have a similar option. Though i recommend ps3media player every time when appropriate.

If VLC Tversity and PS3media player fail you, give up now, and fix your 'tablet' so it has basic android functionality. That way you can actually do meaningful things on it. EG: Play angrybirds while jogging.

Oh shit, TVersity and PS3Media Player can do that? I never even thought to try those, cheers Marlin/Skythra, sounds like exactly what I wanted.

Apparently you can sideload apps onto it, like Ticman said, if you get the APK onto the tablet (like email it to yourself and grab it from your email through the browser), you can get stuff installed on it, and then people who've been hacking around with this tablet have found ways to boot it into a safe mode kind of deal that gives you the android desktop and lets you run and install things, but seeing as its my brothers and isn't actually mine, and cost him a fair bit of money, I'm hesitant to start fucking with it too much.

VLC can do it easily.

http://www.videolan.org/doc/play-howto/en/ch04.html#id295619

Scroll down to the HTTP interface section and start reading. I fumbled around with it last year some time and seem to recall getting it up and running.

The same way you would eat a homemade cheeseburger but with less sesame seeds.
