It might seem weird for the system to have launched without it (or a bunch of other features, really), but the PS Vita is YouTube-ready as of today, Sony has announced.
With the YouTube application on PS Vita, you can watch millions of YouTube videos on the stunning 5" OLED screen and take advantage of many of the YouTube functions you're already familiar with - you can easily search for videos, choose favourites and make comments. Your personal YouTube account is available right on your PlayStation Vita.
They're definitely right about the OLED screen being awesome, but beyond that, this news really just brings the device in line with most other mobile devices. Hopefully Sony continues to grow the feature-set of their impressive handheld for the foreseeable future.

As far as handheld gaming devices go, wouldn't the PS Vita be the only handheld gaming device with youtube... given the 3DS does not...

so you don't consider iOS devices or Android devices as handheld gaming devices?

It seems crazy that in a world when they're now trying to compete with smartphones in the mobile gaming space that Vita users have to wait for Sony to make their own interfaces for facebook and twitter and youtube.

Why not just open up application development so that these companies and the community can make these apps for you? More and more it is seeing that their tenacious clinging to the walled-garden approach is going to be their undoing.

Too right, Steve. Although the Vita and 3DS are in a different league, people need to understand the market shift since the PSP and DS. Phones reign supreme by a huge margin. It's not about being a 'gamer' or the device being a 'console' it's about getting great experiences at $2.99 on a device you have with you anyway - no additional pocket bulges required.

Yes and no, does it play games... yes, do I take the games on the devices seriously... no.

Even with big tittles like GTA on mobile devices, it still isn't nor will it ever be a substitute for a dedicated hand held gaming device. (for me at least)

Yeah, I feel the same way. I mean Angry Birds or Cut the Rope on my phone is a fun way to waste 5 or 10 minutes while I'm out and about and waiting for something, but if I want to play real games I go and play them on real gaming systems. And in the same way, I find myself not really giving a shit about things like web browesers, youtube, facebook and twitter on my gaming devices because I'm not carrying them around with me like my phone, when I turn them on I'm turning them on to play games.

And for the most part every time i play a game on an iOS or Android device I think to myself "oh wow this reminds me of (insert flash game I played in a web browser 5+ years ago).

Sure some mobile games are innovative and original, but for the most part most are quick money grabs that the masses are seeing for the first time and thinking they are genius.

In saying that, I'm all for anything that brings gaming to the masses and makes it more accessible, i'll support it, encourage it and even occasionally partake in the enjoyment of it.
