Dick Smith - anyone worked for them?

Just wondering if anyone has worked for them, in particular management and what your thoughts were/are of the company?

I know it's owned by Woolworths but would you consider it a place you could grow as a manager?

Wife works for woollies as a manager and she got paid better than I did as an IT manager. Also get 5% discount at anything wollies owns except Dan Murphy's

Oh DSE seems like a wonderful company.. management seems especially competent.. oh wait, wasn't there that leaked internet sale debacle earlier this year? Staff nabbing a bunch of stock infront of customers or sale items plainly not existing at any location? :) Don't do it dude!!

Woolies is alright. I went as far as Grocery Manager before I quit for uni. If you know what you're doing, and you can manage your staff correctly it's a easy job. Just like most jobs though every now and then it'll have its challenges, if you can handle the stress you'll be fine. When I was a 19 and a Grocery 2ic a few years back I was on 53k, also it's the best salaried paying retail company. If I stuck with the company i'd be a store 3ic(Long Life Team Leader) by now(I'm 22) so they're not afraid of progression if you're not shit.

Although back on topic I haven't worked for Dick Smith, but yeah, they are going through some serious restructuring though prior to sale from what i've heard/remember. I wouldn't join them until they've stabilised a bit first, or at least know what there plans for the future are.

In hindsight I'm so thankful I left retail to go to uni though.

I worked as a manager with them for 5 years and in head office.

More than happy to answer any questions about them. My experience was good. There are very few managers left (in the area i worked in) that really put in the effort to go above and beyond the job for their customers and staff. It's important if you want to go down the path of management that you always find the right way to balance what is best for the business while at the same time look after the customer.

So long as you get a good area manager who really drives each store and everything about it as well as finding that balance you'll progress really quickly.

The only reason I left was my wife got cancer and i had to become a full-timer carer. I was treated really well my upper management at Dick Smith. I was given a 6 month leave without pay in hope i could return when things got better and a company laptop to do casual work from home when they needed my help. The 6 months turned into 2 years so i had to resign.

Retail is as retail does.

If it's urgent, and to pay bills. I say yes.

If you want something better from life, I'd just looking elsewhere.

(this is ALL dependent on your working background, aspirations, motivations etc)

I went off in the ASN store in the City a while back about some of the horribly incorrect advice one of the guys there was handing out, it wasn't pretty. (one of the guys who chased me out was though, hi my NZ sweety, if you are reading). :)

I applied for woolworths a few times,
never heard back.
Going for even more cutting edge irrelevance. :P

I did night fill at Big W for a while and I worked there on the registers for a few months as a teenager. I think Woolworths is a good company to work for, the training is good and everyone I met was friendly and happy to help a newbie.
The only problem I had was that they weren't giving me enough hours as they seemed to be overstaffed.

Le Bump (just got notified about this)

Worked there for about 3 years during my younger years, If you LOVE retail and are into electronics then you might be alright.

Working there I realized I hate retail with a passion, soo many cuntstomers (though it WAS redcliffe). If I wasn't breathing in the good herbs back then I wouldn't have lasted a week.
