Warhammer 40k 6th edition rules

Will probably only appeal to a small number of people here, but from previous threads I've noticed theres at least a couple of 40k players.
I wasn't even aware until today, but theres a new edition (6th edition) of the rules coming out in like a week. Supposedly it will be available for pre-order in stores tomorrow, along with a few other bits and pieces like a new set of templates, objective markers, and vehicle damage markers.
From a bit of googling, it seems a lot of the proposed new rules are still rumoured, but this close to release the rumours are pretty solid. Some of the more interesting ones that grabbed my attention:
- HQ's can challenge things to single combat
- Units with jump packs get to re-roll their charge rolls
- New vehicle damage system that sounds like it borrows from the "structure points" type of damage system that Apocalypse super heavy tanks use. Vehicles now have hull points, and each time you score a critical hit on a vehicle it loses a hull point, and when its lost all its hull points its dead. Land Raiders have 4 hull points, so I guess its safe to assume thats the max
- Lots of special rules for fortifications and apparently you will have a "Fortifications" slot in your force organisation chart that lets you take fortifications as part of your army
- Rules for allies that let you ally armies together and use units from multiple codexes
- Sounds like pre-measuring is in
- Close combat weapons have AP values now
- Can fire heavy weapons on the move with a BS penalty
Pictures of the book, templates, dice, markers, etc
I dunno, some of it sounds cool, some of it sounds like its going to complicate things and involve remember a lot of special rules that slow down combat. Have to wait and see I guess.
No pre-orders or info on the 6th edition starter set, but the hot tip is that its going to be Dark Angels and Chaos Space Marines, with a new Chaos Space Marines codex hot on the heels of the 6th edition release.

Pre-measurement should be equipment based. For instance, if your army is equipped with a Range Finder or something it can be used to pre-measure.

Seems like maybe they're trying to bring fantasy and 40k a little more in line with each othher, cos I think you pre-measure everything in fantasy? Not really sure cos I've never personally played it myself.
Also I noticed theres now a deck of psychic power cards that you use when you take psyker abilities, which mirrors fantasy as well with its spell cards or magic cards or whatever they are.

The large collectors edition was selling for $466, and it's already sold out. I'm a fantasy buff but might consider getting back into 40K as I love the models.

Yeah, that $460 one was a bundle of a collector's edition of the book, normal edition, dice, templates, etc, etc. I think if you just want the collector's edition one by itself thats still available (or at least it was at lunchtime), but I didn't bother. A friend had the collector's edition version of the previous book and while it looked absolutely awesome, and was very impressive, it was entirely impractical to actually use at a game.

The magical ocean tax is pretty nasty at almost twice the price.
Warhammer 40,000: Rulebook - £45.00 or $69 AUD. Here its going to cost $124
Fuck that bullshit. I assume it gets its own seat on the plane ride over at that price.

Hopefully the starter set price wont be dollars texas (it will, but one can dream at least).
I'll probably just browse a mates copy or ply khel with "favors" to have a look at his copy :P

I do so love being plied with favours!
I wont have much to do with it when I get it anyway, all my 40k stuff is currently in storage (along with all the rest of my stuff actually) from when I moved everything up from melbourne.

Well not really. It's mostly GW. Compared to other companies, their stuff is super expensive. Other games rulebooks (full colour) sit around 30 for a softcover, 45~ for a hardcover with starter sets ranging from around $30-80 which generally gives you everything you need to play (sans dice, rulers, etc). Gw introduced a trade embargo on selling across the ocean so Aussies can only buy from Australia now.
GW is a perfect example of people complaining but not properly voting with their wallets. Given it's got the biggest market share in the table top wargaming market, still, for all the complaining people do about the price, you think they would move to another system/company who cares about fans and prices properly.

Yeah, its pretty expensive :( And the thing where they made overseas companies stop selling to Australia was pretty lame, but at the end of the day I just like their models/game/story/fluff better than the other stuff out there, and its not like I'm known for spending my money responsibly anyway!
To be fair though, the new rulebook is HUGE. $120 is probably still a bit high, but I mean I've paid $100 for computer reference books that size before, and this thing is hardcover tome with glossy pages, so its probably not *too* far out of line. Well, not too far out of line with other similar books that you would buy in Australia, it is still way out of line when you compare it to overseas prices. Stupid Australia tax.
No idea what the starter set is going to be priced at, but you also have to keep in mind the GW starter sets aren't like an army starter set, its two armies, enough to play a whole game with two people, so I'd imagine it'll be priced accordingly.

I would have got pretty involved into this when I was younger, and perhaps still now, if it wasn't so damn expensive.
Never fear, with the rapid expansion of 3D printers I'm sure Chinease knockoff's of the Models will be flooding the market within a few years.
All you would need is a laser 3D scanner, a couple of those 3D printer kits, a computer and small pile of cash for the initial purchases of Miniatures. You could flog em off from a Chinese (or other supported country) hosted website for a fraction of the price of 'offical' minatures and laugh at the useless cease and desist orders.

Sounds like a really good set of changes, quite used to a lot of those due to being a fantasy player tho.
Pre-measuring allowed makes things flow much smoother and gets rid lots of the jerkish arguments about distances.
Close combat AP will be nice too, less of a 'I have a power weapon, yay' 'I don't :('
I'm curious if the pysker changes are going to replace all the recent codex powers etc.. , tho it would be nice to see a wider use of them.
I think the part I'm most looking forward to is the universe fluff changes, after a brief google about 6th ed it sounds like some fairly major shakeups to the basic races and ongoing timeline. Should be interesting read :)
Shall definetly get my brother to ship me a copy from the UK, screw paying that huge an markup to buy it from the same store locally.

Oh nice Tanaka, I used to get stuff from Milsims in melbourne, but their service kind of went to shit and they screwed me on one of my orders so I've gone off them. That site looks like a decent alternative :)
