I'm heading to Thailand mid July for a week. We are doing 4 days in phuket and 3 days in kho samui (how ever you spell it). We are just doing generic touristy things, elephants, diving etc. I am looking for a decent day long cooking course to learn some cooking skills. Droping into Vietnam after that for a week or so.

The beach was ordinary and literally elbow to elbow as far as the eye could see with fat middle aged europeans in g-strings. (Phuket). All day long there's trucks with speakers mounted on them driving down the road blasting advertising shit at you. Walking around the bar districts is just greasy as and constant harassment but not in a nice way.

Then khaosahn road in bangkok - literally walked up and back and left - it was BOGAN CENTRAL. I don't think I even saw a thai person - just aussie bogans with mullets and southern cross tattoos throwing up in the gutter and lady boys trying to harrass you.

I like partying - I've done Laos Tubing and vietnam halong bay cruises etc and they were epic, but the main areas of thailand are just scummy. Stick to the less-big places and it's much nicer - pi pi was awesome but maybe I just got lucky on a week with no bogans..

Bangkok is a shit hole amen to that, but Phuket is ok dude, you just gotta know how to approach it... Yeah you get harassed by cunts trying to sell you suits and shit, but you just keep walking and ignore it. Like Red mentions, he diving is awesome, i did my open water ticket there...

Touristy shit wise, don't bother with Phantasy, or the zoo, but definitely walk Banglah road at night and go see a ping pong show.

Tips:
When one of those suit dickheads asks you to shake his hand, put your finger in your nose, he won't be that keen after that.

Go to the doc before you go and tell him your heading to Thailand and need some diarrhea tablets and make sure you get the good ones.
Don't drink the water if you can help it (ice in drinks is a bit hard to avoid) stick to bottled water as much as you can.
You can usually take your own bottles of spirits etc down to the pub bar and they will pour your drinks using that. We spent all day in the swim up bar drinking our own cheap as fk bourbon instead of hotel prices which aren't that cheap when you do the maths.
Any time a shop owner gives you a price, drop it by 2/3's. They will laugh, you walk away, and they will call you back, Offer them a bit more and chances are they will take it. If they don't call you back then keep walking, there's millions of em all selling the same shit.
Get some karmagra while your there, it's awesome and your mrs will love it.
Go see kick boxing. Well worth it and a it can be full on. Don't get caught up betting with the locals tho, the fights are usually set up one way or the other and if they are hell keen to bet, then bank on that fight being fixed.

Bangkok fucking rules (though I had thai friends to take me out to some good clubs and shit). But if you are looking for a chill beach holiday imo Koh Tao and go across to Haadrin for some mushroom shakes.

Phuket ftw, bit more expensive, but so good =).

Awesome for a couple/family, Bangkok for single mates and shit.

Can't wait to head back to SE Asia myself. Think i'll hire a couple XR250s with a mate in north Vietnam and ride in the jungle this time. Rode up the coast from Saigon to Hanoi in 2010 and it was just awesome.

If you're brave enough to get in the thick of the traffic, hire a motorcycle and head out into the countryside. Never been a fan of the touristy / guided tour stuff.

I would love to get out to the wide countryside to see the real thailand but wont have that opportunity for this visit, next one for sure. ;)

Patong beach. Thats where i went. I can understand people getting put off by how dirty it was but as a guy it wasnt an issue. Awesome experience and i didnt even go there to drink/party/sex.
