I have sweet memories of that game, N64 was when I started to game. Whenever, I see those N64 games, I am hit with a warm fuzzy nostalgic feeling.
Gaming at it's best.

It's hard to pick a single game having played so many. Super mario 64 was pretty good. Zelda: OT is definitely up there. In terms of group fun the first couple Mario Party's were great. Generally I think all the great games from memory came from the N64.
After that I progressed to xbox, xbox 360 to PC gaming, but it seems when thinking about none seem to really match up to those good ol' days.

mario kart on the SNES. I got it when i was a teeny kid and it took me several years to finish! (i played other games in between but i always came back to it trying to finish it). As i grew up i understood more about the game and was so happy when I clocked the whollllllle thing!

Well, theres tonnes of games I love because they're great games, but one of the games that had the biggest impact on me was Under a Killing Moon, just because it was really the first game I played that told a really epic, really cinematic story and made me realise games could be a very serious medium and stand shoulder to shoulder with films or books when it came to telling a story. I mean I enjoyed heaps of games before UaKM, on the Atari 2600, Master System, Mega Drive, NES, SNES, but UaKM was the first one that really opened my eyes to the possibilities of where gaming could go.

I used to love Wing Commander Privateer back in the days. Sunk a lot of time into that, but I guess for me the single game which got me into PC gaming and influenced me as I was younger was quake 2.
In terms of my favourite game of all time: Company of Heroes, and a standout based on the countless hours I have sunk into it since the day it was released.

If I'm not including 95%+ of my total gaming time spent on multi-player FPS games/mods,
-Donkey Kong Country
-Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
-Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
Nothing comes close, these games are over 15 years old and still are my favourite single player experience, I must have finished each one at least 30 times.
I have completed the original without a single death, best gaming achievement ever.

Probably have to be the original GoldSrc engine Half-Life. SP was outstanding & after that I spent so much MP time playing HL:DM and all the various mods that spawned (Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, Science and Industry, Natural Selection and of course CounterStrike).
Runners up probably System Shock 2, TF2, the original Fallout and the first two gold box classics Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds. Maybe chuck HoMM2 in there, because it's so f'n good but so f'n frustrating. SNES Zelda deserves a mention as well for nostalgia's sake, A Link to the Past. I never played the N64 follow ups OoT or MM but I played the shit out of LttP back in the day.

The Quake Series.
Online gaming started here, (q95.bat) I remember strongly April 1996 and onwards, q95.bat, winquake.exe / quakeworld etc on vision, wireleplay, ozemail etc.
Original Quake was fun no matter what, wether it be FFA, TDM, CTF, CA, QRALLY and TEAMFORTRESS!!!!
Ahh fuck how much fun. Quake is now a completely different game skill wise, it was fun back in the mid/late 90's learning how to play a game with everyone else and push the boundaries.
Q2 was awesome fun for TDM, CTF, RA2 imo CTF was the bomb!
Q3 was awesome for CPMA, RA3, TDM.
Duel in all is awesome, QLIVE is basically the Quakeworld of Q3.
The only other game that has grabbed like Quake did was Battlefield 3.

The original FarCry. It was pre-console so the graphics were amazing and really pushed the limits of PC hardware back then. The gameplay was great. Atmosphere was great, some of the mutant monsters were scary, fast and hard to kill.
Crysis wasnt too bad, but nowhere near as good as FarCry.

My favourite video game was Super Mario Bros on the SNES. It was a elegeant, simple yet at time very hard game, and I have very fond memories of playing the SNES into the wee hours of the night with my brother. It's one of my most favourite video games that I even got a Piranha Plant tattoo.
My second favourite game of all time was Bubsy. That game rocked the socks, and trying to play again a couple weeks ago and I failed miserably because it was just so different and I wonder how my little child brain was able to comprehend it all.

Other than that, the game I probably look back on most fondly would be Baldur's Gate 2. I think that's the only game I've ever played that hooked me so bad I took a sickie to stay home and play it!

For sheer replay-ability, Transport Tycoon and the deluxe version that came out after that. I still play it to this day using OpenTTD and it's close to 20 years old. It just hit a trigger in my head that keeps me amused for years. Another early one was LHX Attack Chopper. I played the crap outta that.
Doom for the amazing atmosphere (at the time). Duke3D for the hilarious multiplayer. Quake for the "real" 3D environments, and of course shooting at strangers on the internets. I will never forget connecting to an online quake server for the first time and having my mind blown. Q3 was awesome for the LAN scene, I still whip it out and shoot at bots when I have 15mins to kill.
TBH, there aren't a lot of games that have made me go "Phwoar!" since then, except maybe Eve, just for the sheer scale of it.
edit: crystal caves as well! Played the bejeebus out of that!

Funny you should mention that because q2 CTF was what got me hooked on games. However the chaos mod was better for our small 5 or so people LAN games because it wasn't team based so you didn't need a lot of people for it.

Probably Thief - You play a cynical master thief in "The City", a medieval metropolis populated by brutal guards, fanatical steampunk religions, extremely wealthy lords, forest pagans, and a secret society. Dealing with guards in a freeform giant mansion sneaker, slowly piecing together the situation via extensive voyeurism. Has that really oldschool awesomeness about it which games for all their modern greatness still don't manage to catch (which Minecraft managed to channel a little of). Some absolutely fantasmagorical music and atmosphere.
edit: Hell, the only positive Zero Punctuation review was a retroactive review of Thief.

mortal kombat II - used to be fun to go to the shops with your parents and then just fuck off to kmart/target and play the demo megadrive against other kids.
counter-strike - the main lan game I played, good times
day of defeat - back when it was new it was great, like a more serious business counter-strike with more variation. I played it recently and did not enjoy it anymore though.
jedi knight II: jedi outcast - the only star wars game that I actually enjoyed and could play for hours and hours, I knew all the exploits, the game got less fun as they started patching it.
tf2 - because it is a well made game
I could get all nostalgic and talk about other games that have blipped on the radar like handhelds, master system games, and RTCW, but their influence on me pales compared to these games.

It should come as no surprise to people here that in my list of favorites are going to be the Wing Commander saga - WC2, WC3 (for the gameplay), WC4 (for the cinematics/story), Academy etc.
But there are definitely some honourable mentions that I keep coming back to (and buying when they were re-released on iOS, for example):
- Secret of Mana (SNES)
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
- The 7th Guest (PC)
I think despite the amount of time I spent playing Quake 3 over a period of *years*, Tribes still has a greater place in my heart. And despite the amount of time I'm currently sinking in to Diablo 3 in preference to Tribes Ascend, I still like TA more, as hard as that is to explain. I dunno, it's something about the reward system of D3.

Mine is Team Buddies. You control a bunch of limbless capsule things (thing raymen sort of limbless) who are all happy go lucky until one day a spaceship starts dropping crates full full of weapons and everything goes to shit. It has really cool controls; you control one but give commands to 3 others at the same time, an interesting building system that uses the crates to make different weapons (from machine guns to tanks to more men for you). The characters also swore a lot. It was lots of fun.

I don't really believe that time sunk in to a game necessarily correlates directly to how good a game is. Consider Civilisation or WoW. They were massive time sinks, with little reward. But for some reason, despite that it would take 15 minutes to complete a turn, or walk from Ironforge to fuckknowswhere, you'd put up with it saying "just one more...", even though it shit you to no end.
Sim City 4 was a great time sink, but best game? Not convinced, even though I love it.
What about Lemmings, or Prince of Persia?
Edit: Also, hows about Commander Keen?
