Proposal: ISPs to police gambling websites

Under a recommendation in the Department of Broadband's interim report on its review of Interactive Gambling they propose that ISPs should work with the AMCA to "police" gambling websites.

If the review's recommendations are accepted, ISPs could be required to direct Australian consumers to a warning web page when they attempt to access a prohibited gambling site.
...
"This approach places ISPs in a position where they would be enforcing prohibitions on gambling with overseas providers where there is no law that currently prevents Australian citizens from gambling on these sites"

According to the article they also propose regulating financial transactions "to impede payments to offshore gambling sites".

I doubt this will get up but governments both here and abroad have a remarkable obsession with breaking the Internet for no real gain.
1) Gamblers would simply start using or SSL or VPNs.
2) Not every http client is a browser.

Thermite; god.

Also doesn't this allow a gateway into ISP's to police users?

Welcome to 2007 (so to speak)
I'm sure you remember the farce Nats,

Next thing you know it will be classified as funding terrorist organisations if you use these facilities.
Happened in the US cause the tax dept wasn't getting revenue from winnings, works different for legal facilities whom pay revenue in Australia.

Pixelated people against a pixelated wall?
And here I was thinking that one day, I'd like to work in theory cause shit just worked.

I find it pretty amusing.

Seems to me the problem is not so much the gambling as the money headed offshore.

In which case why not ban any offshore online store?

If it's the gambling then my guess is you could get more effect doing something about pokies.

So which is it?
