Getting a car valued?

I need to get a car valued - in Brisbane, preferably near Toowong/Indooroopilly. I know nothing of the world of automobiles, and have no idea how to do this or where I would look.

Is this the sort of thing any car-related place can do or is it the realm of specialists?

(I also need to get a safety cert so if there's a place that can do both at the same time that would be rad. )

Does it need to be a formal valuation? http://www.redbook.com.au is a pretty good resource for buying/selling prices.

redbook, and look up carsales for your model of the same age and approximately same km's and condition. And then base it off the cheapest one you see on carsales that matches those criteria.

Redbook is the best place to start. Or check similar on Caresales etc if you intend to do a private sale.
Heaps of places will do the safety cert, where you usually get it serviced is probably easier.

isn't there a mech, like right next to your office?,

redbook is pretty much the go to place to get an idea, if it needs to be a formal valuation http://www.mycarprice.com.au/default.aspx?affiliate=eurodb

uses the glass's guide which is what insurers and banks use for valuing cars

also, carsales must have known something was happening http://www.redbook.com.au/car-advice/2012/gearing-up-to-buy-do-your-research-30528 trog has some made media power that he didn't know about

or he's just being cautious because he doesn't have any interest in cars other than getting from A-B (which I'm pretty sure he has mentioned before)
no point paying a single cent more than you have to, or selling below a fair price

Having previously worked at Carsales, I can't help but cringe at all these mentions of Redbook. And the realisation that yeah, sadly, that's where you've got to go :(

It's basically even more boring than that; it is just an accountant-advised move from company name into my name for reasons that are so boring I haven't even tried to understand them. The valuation is just to ensure it is all above board and I'm not trying to scam tax/duty concessions or something.

Thanks for suggestions!

Neither of the two mechanics here do valuations :( I have to go out to Darra or something for the Ford one if I want them to do it.

I would be happy to use the Redbook one except I'm less than half the average # of miles on Redbook, so I feel like that might be lowballing it a little and in the interests of being paranoid about tax stuff I want to make sure it is accurate as possible.

Finally had a call back from the Office of State Revenue who deal with this stuff and they said they just use the Redbook and says the value listed there is fine to use.

yeah tax office won't give a shit, provided it's somewhat reasonable. I mean, I'm guessing we aren't talking about a $100k car here.

Heh no far from it.

At first I was amazed that it is now worth only $10k according to Redbook, but I guess I've had it 9 years.

Having lower k's only puts you at the high end of the price range. Redbook has done me well for all my car purchases. I know a mechanic who does road worthy's. They just need to be licensed for it.

dude, a valuation is pretty much market value. so find cars that are selling (carsales, ebay) similar condition to yours and use that. as long as you can justify the valuation then you're fine.
