Notch Makes Even More Money with Record-Breaking Minecraft XBLA Sales

His fans will call it a triumph, while his dissenters will claim it's just more money the man doesn't need, but either way you look at it, you can't fault the figures: Mojang and 4J's XBLA version of the sandbox phenomenon, Minecraft, has broken sales records on the Xbox 360's arcade service, selling more than one million digital copies in just five days of being on sale.

The game went on sale for 1200 MS Points which works out to be around AUD$20, so Notch and co have already raked in more than 20 million - not bad for a simplified console release of a PC title. Microsoft has also noted that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition broke the day-one sales record on the service, ousting Trials Evolution which had previously sold through 100,000 copies.

Notch went to his favourite social platform, Twitter, to express his thoughts on the game's console release:
Well then. Saw the official sales numbers for the first 24 hours of Minecraft Xbox 360, and it's very, very good. Profitable in an hour.
It will certainly be interesting to see if any of Mojang's future projects can stir up a storm like Minecraft. And in case you missed it, check out our review of the Xbox 360 version of the game right here.

Minecraft should be renamed to Hypecraft imo.
Its fun for a few hours or one big creation on a multiplayer server and then bugger that

Considering that entire FPS games made by world renowned companies can be finished in 'a few hours' how is Minecraft worse? At least it's cheaper...

(Note: I haven't, nor will I ever, play MineCraft)

I reckon I got a good 20 hours of ridiculous enjoyment out of it, before it fell just flat of being an exceptionally good game.

edit: Except that's because it got too easy before I actually needed to be using my farms and stuff. Maybe I just need to try hard mode. Holy shit, minecraft desire suddenly skyrocketing.. Tunnelling new minecart lines across huge stretches of terrain suddenly seeming awesome again..

Oh so that's what they've been doing instead of finishing the beta they call a game. Cool.

There is nothing to do in minecraft :/ Just sit there with your mouse pressed down swinging at dirt with other dirt.

You build up your 1 man economy to the point that you can turn yourself into a tank able to traverse the deep mines, with a crafty minecart mechanism everywhere for escaping, and farms to sustain you, and, stuff.

And you can make maps. And boats.

not any more, if you don't eat you die too, adds another level of complexity to the game.
