I think my video card has died - help me!

Ok, so I have had a few problems with my system of late, then all of a sudden my dual monitors stopped working and I was getting a message in my status tray that the nVidia drivers had had a heart attack and needed to be restarted.
Looking in the device manager I have an exclamation next to the GPU device (nVidia 9800GTX) and if I double click on that I get the message Dieses Gerät wurde angehalten, weil es Fehler gemeldet hat. (Code 43) which is something like "This device was stopped due to failure Code 43".
So I look all over the interwebs and plenty of people have had this problem - mostly associated with SLI setups though it seems - and it looks to me like the GPU might have died.
The weird thing is, if the GPU has died, then why hasn't it died properly? I'm typing on the computer now at 1920x1200 res but only with one monitor.
I have tried system restore to well before it happened, re-installing drivers, uninstalling then booting into safe mode in order to completely clean nVidia drivers out followed by reinstalling.
So I'm at a loss. It's more or less time for an upgrade anyway, but if you have any suggestions I will try anything.

Have you tried playing a game with it?

download occt and check temps and run the gpu stress
that would tell you if it was heat related.
It could be likely due to the fact that the card is like 4 years old which is pretty ancient in terms of computer terms.
try it on another computer, try another computers card in it
also it could be power related if your psu stopped feeding that rail power propperly.

Run MSI kombustor tests & see how hot the thing gets while it's in use. Does the fan on it even work? Maybe it's broken?

Nup, didn't, but I did play a movie with it and the output was pathetic.
Ok, I re-seated the card and I put it in the other PCIe slot just for good measure as well. It wasn't really dusty so that doesn't seem to be an issue. In the process I had to unplug the PSU and move some stuff around, although the two extra 6-port PSU plugs that are going into the GPU card were still running of the same rail.
Yep, card is pretty ancient. I'm planning on upgrading in the next couple of months.
Ok, detected card and re-installed drivers. Have to restart, brb.

Ok, so that didn't work.
Moving onto skythra. I installed OCCT and clicked 'on'. CPU temp sky-rockets to 86'C and then OCCT stops saying that Core #0 is over maximum temp (85'C) after 36 sec.
If I move to the GPU tab and click 'on' the status button says 'starting' and then almost immediately 'stopped - user cancelled' (even though I didn't cancel it).

Take the heatsink off, rub the thermal paste off and reapply, make sure the fan is spinning and while you're at it dust out the cpu heatsink and try again.

Yeah looks like I need to address the CPU, but in the meantime not sure how that affects the GPU which is where I have a problem :-/
Edit: Couldn't run MSI Kombustor - it said OpenGL 2.0 or higher required, 1.1 detected. Maybe a side-effect of the card being stopped.

Ahh I was reading that as GPU not CPU, do the same to both.

Really Pinky, 9800GTX... solution.
Look man, I'm going to downgrade to my IBM XT, EGA monitor - I never had problems with that!
Sure, I couldn't do anything with it, but I NEVER HAD PROBLEMS.
Also, thanks for the gfx card suggestion :-/
Fuck it dudes, I've made up my mind, new computer Monday. Don't waste any time with ideas on my account. This bitch is getting recycled.

Can you give a reading of your system/case temp at the same time? Your CPU temp seems to be rising slowly from an already-high number, which indicates -everything- may be heating up inside your case.
When i stress test, my i7/i5 chips happily jump from 40 to 70 degrees in about 2 seconds, not over 30 seconds! I wouldn't have thought the Core 2 Duo would be that different in sensor response time.

You were running BF3 on this card? Should look way better on a new card with DX11 enabled if you're still playing it.

Yep, I was, but I haven't really played it much.
lol m3nt4l, I have a lot of pink things. A pink computer case is not one of them.

uninstall your chipset drivers and install them again...
i can only think of 3 things outside of the video card being dead
1) motherboard issue (fix chipset controling the pcie lane)
2) power to the video card
3) heat because it's summer and it's hot

Thanks Herbal but I'm just going to bite the bullet and promote consumerism at the expense of the environment and get a new computer.
No case looks cool but with the frequency I use a vacuum cleaner that would never work.
Good idea reinstalling chipset drivers, skythra. Will give that a burl now.

your video card has exceeded it's duty cycle.
if only you were an engineer with a background in IT or something :/
hey btw - what's the real question P?

Oi pinky, do you use AVG antivirus? I just installed it to check something and it completely fucked my computer up (error 43 on video card same as you). It wouldn't let the nvidia drivers start, soon as I uninstalled AVG (free version) computer is all happy again.

I have been using Avast free version, no problems with it. AVG has gone down hill in recent years I think.

Nah, it was deffo the vid card.
When I rebuilt our two computers I tried it out in my gf's with two different PSU's including my new 650W PSU and it didn't work. Definitely the vid card.
Interesting about AVG. I use Avast! as well and I've been really happy with it. Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be a great option too, but it auto-deletes some annoying things.

Eh, where? EDIT: nvm, found it and removed it ;) I don't want no trouble, yo.
Interestingly I did have "help me QGL" in the original subject and a mod removed "QGL". That's fair enough though, good move, I agree with that. Embrace us Melburnians whole-heartedly.

pinky: they removed the QGL because the QGL forums are now Ausgamers - General Chat. So people who visit ausgamers general chat will see it and go wtf is this qgl?
I tried MS security essentials once on my laptop, it told me something like it couldn't update or scan or something, because windows wasn't genuine. Then a few minutes later it figured out there was nothing wrong with windows and I wasn't Jack Sparrow, and went on its merry little way as normal. lolwut.
On that front, anyone else have any issues with that WGA bullshit when you come out of suspend it tells you windows isn't genuine, then a little while later it tells you windows is genuine again?
