The Telstra / BigPond networks appear to be having some difficulties at the moment. Our office link is offline and we have only intermittent access to, like, the Internet.

Can anyone get to the BP service status page? I can't even get to it on my mobile connection at the moment.

yeah it seems much more wide spread than just Telstra, we're having problems all up and down the east coast as well as internationally

Dear Partner

We have been advised of a major outage affecting 3rd party broadband services in NSW, VIC, and QLD.

ISP’s affected include Telstra and potentially traffic traversing Telstra networks.

I had a foxtel + bigpond cable outage yesterday and the bigpond service status page never reported on it, but the telstra service status was up to date within minutes

Mind you it is down for me on 3g and work internet because of the nation wide telstra issues :) so that's just for future reference

Dodo advertised the entire internet to Telstra, Telstra didn't have route filters in place for that and they went "Yep, Ok!"

http://lists.ausnog.net/pipermail/ausnog/2012-February/012202.html

Yep, so it appears Telstra are not filtering routes being learnt from Dodo. So I'm guessing Telstra will be implementing some changes on that BGP session.

Cheers,
Warrick

From facebook:

All – Telstra lost connectivity with the international data network around 1:40pm this afternoon, which resulted in an overload on domestic sites, causing issues with internet access.

The vast majority of customers are back online, but our engineers continue to monitor the network.

Call volumes are high to our customer service channels because of this outage and we appreciate your patience.

We'll keep you updated as soon as we can.

Our BGP didn't fail over cause the outage we so far removed from out links it could still see the routers etc ... we had to manually fail over the network by pulling the external link from the Telstra connection.

Neither, so I don't really get all the Dodo jokes. Surely it's BigPond/Telstra's responsibility to ensure that any outside influences can't make their servers all fall over right? So even though Dodo techs may have triggered this fault, it seems like the blame and ridicule would be more appropriately aimed at Big T.

I'm no network engineer but my laymans understanding is that BGP is used between routers to tell other routers what networks a particular router is responsible for. Dodo apparently advertised to Telstra that it's routers were now responsible for the entire internet.

Yeah that's my understanding of BGP.
Dodo made a catastrophic configuration screw up that propagated bad routing information, and Telstra's routers blindly accepted it when they shouldn't have, knocking everyone offline.
You can bet there were some nasty phone calls between Telstra and Dodo going on earlier today (probably still).

you sign up with Telstra or any ISP for a commercial internet link, you each say "I own these IP addresses (blah.blah.blah) and this is how you can connect to me"

What dodo did was say to Telstra "these are our IP addresses, this is how you can reach me (blah.blah.blah.blah IPs)"
except they accidentally made it look like every IP on the internet was available on that link between Telstra and Dodo

They are both at fault, Dodo should not be advertising ranges that it doesn't actually own/host/sell to Telstra (if Dodo owned a big undersea cable they might advertise ranges that Telstra buy access to for cheap access to some foreign company)

The other problem, quite a serious one, is that Telstra didn't have route filters in place on the Dodo link, so they saw the routes for *everyone* and said "oh hai everybody" instead of "hey uh, we weren't expecting to see these IPs on this link so we'll ignore them"

I hope the guy that hit the enter button to publish the routes did change control to cover his butt :P

but yeah ... pretty bad form from Telstra to replicate BGP routes up and downstream from essentially an untrusted source that can effect such a wide range of it's networks.
