Guild Wars 2, the sequel to a very popular buy-once model MMO Guild Wars, will be increasing it's Closed Beta participants in the coming months according to ArenaNet's blog.
We recently finished our first closed beta test, and we’re now ready to hold progressively larger events. In February we’ll invite select press to participate in beta testing, and in March and April we’ll aggressively ramp up the size of our beta test events so that many of you will have a chance to participate. And of course, this all leads to the release of Guild Wars 2 later this year.
What is interesting is the very last line, which is hopefully a large pointer to a release this year, which many gamers are anticipating. Seeing the latest videos and screenshots, it's shaping up to be a pretty solid MMO, but will it live up to the expectations fellow gamers have?

Just 3 things for people who wonder what all the hype is about this game

- Spell casting system sounds cool. The trinity of classes is gone, with every class (apparantly) having access to at least 1 heal, and being able to tank though I would suspect some are better than others. Anyway is a person casts a healing ward on the ground and a ranger fires arrows through the ward zone, they become healing arrows. Just like casting a fire spell on a warrior who is using whirlwind will starts spitting out fireballs his with attack. Massive number of combinations to find out

- Entire game has an adaptive system to it. if you are max level and then go back into a beginning zone, it will scale you down so that they put up at least somewhat of a challenge. You will never be able to 1 shot mobs.

- Even though there are only 7 or 8 instances in the entire game, they seem to have a pick-your-own-adventure style thing to them with them having multiple pathways so that it takes you multiple runs to clear them. On top of that when you get high level you open "exploration mode" which lets you do just that, explore a hard mode version of the instance and it is so tough, that even the devs themselves have trouble at times clearing them.

Seem like good ideas but shall have to wait until the beta to see their execution.

Having played GW1 since 2005 I am super pumped for this game, since I have been waiting for it since it was announced years ago when the last GW Expansion Eye of the North was released.

Hope I can get a spot in the beta even though at the moment it is limited to most mainstream press.

For those who have not checked it out yet I recommend having a look at the manifesto vido posted up on the GW 2 site.

Sounds pretty cool DM, but not sure about the whole "enemies scale with you" thing. I think most people hated that about Oblivion. I WANT to feel like I'm becoming more powerful over time, to the point where I one shot enemies I once had trouble killing...
