Hey just an idea if QGL/Ausgamers could host a Quake1 CTF server? Pretty much the same as the Powerup CTF server all those years ago? I thought it would be awesome for some nostalgic fun. We could tee up some weekly games, pretty rad.. Thoughts?
I've looked for servers online but all I find are quakeworld servers overseas with people just duelling. Lag is shocking and it's no where near as fun as CTF was..

I'm definitely up for it, mark me down as guaranteed, the problem is that noone ever seems to follow through and I end up being the only one in the server.
The Action Quake 2 one fizzled out before it even started, so crushing :(

im so for it, but can you write details on exactly what files are needed etc. I guess the problem is most ppl have new computers and dont have all the files etc installed.

I would say buying it off steam for like $10 would be the easiest way.. runs in Win7 etc.

this came up a few years ago & i think term had some problems getting a dedicated nq server running properly coz it's so old or something ike that. i imagine there would be all sorts of server--client issues with everyone running different nq clients.
whenever i get quakectf nostalgia i just fire up my quake client -game ctf & load a demo from the powerup server & have a phat belly laugh at everyone lagging to the bejeezuz. :D

I'd play QW but not NQ.

Check out EZ Quake as well.

Also count me in, I have been keen for quake and kingpin for a while.
I have both installed and ready to roll.

EZ Quake... not a bad idea? I had a play around on it a couple of years back and it's nicely modernized & potentially eliminates alot of the 'abandonware' issues that plague old games? Plus it's based on original flavour NQ.

yeah I went through this hell recently trying to resurrect quake for a lan game. I found the darkplaces engine quite good for client side, I just used it as a listen server though since it was for a LAN game of 4 people.

Play quakeworld, the original netcode even for winquake blah blah was total crap (although internet connections then were total crap too).
Better for qw anyway so we can bunnyhop :P
Im def up for it, but I kind of just remembered that I don't have sufficient internet capabilities!

I'm running one right now. Pull down the console & connect to 127.0.0.1 for a good time.

ask ausgamers admins, they could set one up for us, they don't do lans anymore, they could at least give us a fly shit server. I'm surprised they haven't responded here tbh, afterall they moderate these posts and are reading everything we're saying.

I'm checking to see if we can get it added back to server bookings on GameArena - then people can just start a server whenever they want and it doesn't require a full time thing to be online all the time.

Needs the keys for flags and runes, the original CTF mod that PowerUp ran. Nathan knows the one I am talking about..... make it so!

You need to download the KTX server file. KTX lets the users change settings from duel, team dm, dm, clan arena etc etc.

Be warned the website doesn't display properly.

that'll require people then organize a time to play with each other, rather than just firing up their game & connecting & waiting for others to figure out someone's on the server :(

Trog/Jmr, you guys looked into the quake server yet? or has this died in the ass again lol
I remember the powerup server had blue and gold keys as flags and the maps were original iD maps and not custom 3wave ones. Did this come with quake or is it a mod?
The threewave mod had pretty crappy looking flags/grapple and the maps were shit.
|
technically classic CTF is a mod martz, but it only needs to be installed on the server as it uses Quake's own maps, keys, runes etc

I ran a quake ctf server the other week to see how hard it was, is the grapple supposed to look like a mace? and the flags were just normal flags.

quake ctf is the 3wave mod. forged by the greasy hands of zoid himself.
powerup ran a version of the mod that was 2.something.
the version with the real flags, mace grapple, diff rune powers & sounds & the maps of zoid was 3.5.
it is possible to run a server with any version of the 3wave mod (after 2.0) & configure it the way the powerup server was run even though that was an earlier version. you just have to set the right deathmatch variables in the server cfg. map rotation is also just a server side config.

ok I finally managed to get what I think is some CTF shit happening, the axe is the grapple, the gold & blue keys are the flags. It won't let me capture them, but I figure that's because there's only me on the server but I dunno, maybe it's just because I'm noob.
demon: I looked at the qw server readme thing and it says this:
512 Custom Capture the Flag
The enables the use of new sounds, models, maps and skins for
Capture the Flag. If you enable this, your clients must
download the CTF custom pak file and install it.
***NOTE: Not in QW version, assumes custom
which I assume means you can't use the old blue/gold keys thing with quakeworld server?
I'm trying to get this mvdsv + ktx thing working but that website is fucked up.

i think that note just means that if the server is running the "custom" 3.5 content then all the clients must also run the mod & have the right .pak files installed.
you definitely can run a qw-ctf server that uses the older key flags but like i said i don't have much experience with the qw setups... i always assumed it was the same as quake server setups. so it would be just a matter of setting the right deathmatch variables.
it should let you capture the flags even if you are the only player on the server... so not sure what's going wrong there.

it's the pre-war shit in ktx I think. You don't lose health, you don't lose ammo, etc. The warmup bit where you can just go absolutely batshit crazy on each other while you wait for the slower clients to connect. But I think since there's only me there, the warmup session never ends. Needs a second person in there to test.
The KTX site is broken as hell so it's hard trying to configure it.
edit: yep I was right, connected my laptop as a second player and all was good. flags get captured, etc.
Only, I don't much care for the standard id maps as ctf maps
