A place near me called Pie in the Sky won Melbourne's best pie award last year - I think they're OK, not as good as a Yatala but the tourists go fucking nuts over the place. Every Saturday & Sunday it's about a 15 minute wait to get served for take away and about a 30 minute wait to get a seat to dine in.

If you're in Logan Central, Abbott's Bakery have the best pies in the area.
Their fresh rolls are good as well.
Google maps
DO NOT go to the Bakery near the Coles on Wembley road, they're woeful. Most others in the area are ok, but Abbotts are still the best.
If you're looking for a pie with a bit of a difference, the Bakery In Logan Central Plaza (Close to Kingston Road entrance) does awesome Curry Meat pies. Nothing really hot-hot, but some decent ones there.
A friend of the family also owns Piefection. It's more a fancy pie shop though, not really a smoko Pie shop.
They all taste great though, it's on Logan Road and it's worth checking out. http://www.piefection.com.au/

Plain old 'meat pie' with Mushie peas to sweeten things up a notch; pretty tough to beat.

If you think Yatala pies are good, then you didn't have Yatala pies 15-20 years ago when they were good.
The only good pies are my Guinness Steak Pies. You might think Guinness Steak pies are terrible, because normally when you buy them in an Irish restaurant or bar... they are indeed terrible.
I don't have my recipe with me, but I molested some other recipes into a recipe, including Jamie Oliver's one with cheese in the mixture, I innovated potato instead of celery, and put msg in. Only use rump steak not the pov shit they recommend. Fantastic.
If you are looking for a new thing to make, I suggest giving these a go. It takes like 5 hours to do it properly, so my advice is to make the beef stew mixture one night (which you can eat by itself anyway) and make the pies the next night.
Maybe I'll take photos and do a thread next time I do it, because it needs to be tried by everyone.
That and my sausage rolls with apples in them. Oh yeah.

This.
Humble Pie in Northern NSW used to be pretty good but they too seem to have gone downhill. They distribute to cafes etc so they are reasonable widely available. We did call in late one afternoon driving back to Brisbane and they were closing and had already closed off the tills, so they gave us about 10 pies for free, win!

your old man writes this, domino?
if so he's goddamn hilarious. i lol'd heartily at this:
And if you think I'm joking, take a look at the following photo, which I am calling 'Australia's Shame'. This rooster is a young tradie (note the King Gee longs and steel caps) eating a pie with a plastic fork, whilst on the phone to his girlfriend with a bottle of water (not a chocky milk) in front of him. This bloke is surely the Michael Clarke of tradies. And I'm not talking about the 300-plus run-scoring machine of late; I'm talking about the bloke who doesn't want to sing Under the Southern Cross I Stand because his girlfriend is waiting outside the dressing room with a bottle of Cristal and a pocketful of pingers.

The Brumby's down the road from me had awesome pies until the Brumby's chain decided to change them. I knew straight away when I saw the shape of the new pies that something wasn't quite right but against my better judgement I still bought two. And yep, as soon as I bit into it, it tasted like those shitty frozen FourNTwenty pies supermarkets sell. The first bite and there was that gristle texture in the meat. Ended up binning both of them. I was so fucking pissed off.
I spoke to one of the chicky babes who work there and she confirmed the change. Aparrently other people have said something as well. Gonna have to try that Piefection. I've heard good things about that place.

CJ's at caboolture/wamuran/woodford have really nice pies, but they have a huge amount of pepper in em. also good for a sausage roll.
tamborine mountain bakery has a nice curry pie i'm told, also the best cheese and bacon sausage rolls you've EVAR had.
kilcoy bakery does a nice chunky steak pie.
and i've heard good things about the fernvale bakery.

The Highway moved twice. They moved Once (After the origonal owners sold)
So the old owners decided it was time to take advantage of retirement and sold the business. The current proprietors purchased land about ½ kilometre south on the same side of the highway and built a very posh new building, complete with beautiful stained glass windows of Australian flora and fauna.

‘No problem’, says I, and turned my attention to the extensive – gourmet – menu. ‘What’s good?’
‘They’re all good’ Translation: ‘I’ve only worked here a week and haven’t tried any’; OR ‘I’m a vegetarian and no way one of those filthy things is going to touch my lips’.
Very wise words.
I was pushed/insisted a very meaty dish called 'beef cheeks' by a vegetarian waitress once at this really fucked up piece of shit place called Zanetti's in Mitchelton. She used the line "you gotta try everything once" - yeah I was stupid to listen to a vegetarian suggesting that, but they were stupid to hire her. It was so fucking disgusting I almost spewed, and then I got attitude from the staff/chef about it. The chef was like a female cop from the show 'Cops' you know where they are totally unreasonable and over the top and trying to make a point about feminism by being an absolute cuntbag. Not the first time I was disappointed by that place, in the morning they make terrible coffee and really floury tasting pancakes too. Then they served me a tough burnt steak to make up for it, but really I think it was meant as punishment because they thought I wouldn't complain again. So I wound up sending back two meals and left without paying for anything. Totally ruined my night and I had to have maccas. Never going back there and never trusting a vegetarian again.

Nah it did move. It use to be where the new moto shop and pool table place now sits. They moved to where they are to be closer to the new highway exit.
Right across the road family friends of ours use to own that Servo which had to close down because of the new highway and BP.

Used to be an awesome pie shop at Kedron near ALDI but it closed. There a stacks of Big Dad's left though aren't there? I'd never heard of them until I went out with my g/f to visit her family in Toowoomba, then I seemed to be fucking surrounded by them. They were pretty good, but not Yatala.
I keep hearing people say "yatala isn't as good as it used to be", but I still think they're awesome.. maybe you're remembering the Yatala from your childhood and stopped eating them for a while or something so really noticed the (theoretical) change in flava. I've been eating them non-stop for a billion years; I always get one on every trip to the coast (and have been known to drive down to Yatala just to get a pie).
The French Twist at Indro used to have surprisingly decent pies - their plain steak was a bit average but the steak and pepper was great. Unfortunately they seemed to have changed vendors (or recipes) and their new ones are terribad; they taste like reheated frozen pies.
I look forward to reading this blog in detail and sampling more pies!
Also Pie Face - I've been there once and it sucked. Was it just bad luck, or does it suck?
|
I'm glad I saw this ... I was thinking about trying a pie face tomorrow for breakfast. I've been hitting up Bourke St Bakery a fair bit ... their pies are pretty good.

Well, my sample size is literally 1, so I would wait for further opinions to see if I just got unlucky. The one I had didn't suck per se, it just wasn't what I was expecting - it was this big flavoursome gourmet thing with a really rich gravy (I recall it tasting like it has tomatos and other stuff in it) - but I just wanted a meat pie that tasted like a meat pie.

heh that was my other gripe with yatala pies in addition to their pies being a let-down after all the hype - no eftpos - fail

So, you're saying you haven't been to Zanetti's in over 4 years. I can guarantee that they haven't had a female chef or served beef cheeks in at least that long. Also, I would agree about the coffee from that era too.

Then I think you're hallucinating :). I was one of the owners of Zanetti's from 2008 until the end of last year. The only female chef we had we let go within 6 months of owning the restaurant. Since then, the chefs have all been male. Plus, we never had beef cheeks on the menu ;)

everyone raves about yatala pies. Every time i've had one they've been satisfactory, but certainly not mentionable let alone raveable.
I swear it's purely road hunger and the mechanics of next best alternatives totally biasing everything.
There's shitload better pies everywhere, and i'm not talking about pie face.
I'm no pie snob, but considering everyone raves the shit out of them, and the ralph magazine i read in 2004 said they were the top pies in all of australia, i was horribly let down at the completely baseline quality and difficulty of eating yatala pies.
I've had maybe 6 in my life now? All different of course, but I've never lived up to many other pie related craving experiences.
But frankly if you called me many times at 4am when i'm getting a peppersteak pie from a servo, i would have told you "Holy shhiit mang, thish ish the freeaaking besht pie I've ever had!".
So maybe I'm biased. The same pie for breakfast the next day wasn't very good every time. I don't know why pepper, pastry and meat tastes so damn good when i'm sloshed.

@ Moorooka shops there's an Asian bakery on the CBA side. You have to try the chicken pie. It is very unique and tasty. The pastry they use to have, use to be yellowish and flaky but they've changed it. Minus a point for the pastry change but otherwise still good.

it's probably hard to use your imagination to conceive a situation where you and your family pull into a pie shop for lunch and want to buy 6-8 pies and some drinks and whatever, and don't carry much cash around cos it's not 1980 anymore - but I can tell you it does happen

I always carry cash, but only because people who use EFTPOS are slow and annoying at the till.
The worst mistake our work cafeteria made when they changed ownership was to allow eftpos. Takes almost twice as long to get served now...
Even I doubt I would have enough cash to cover 6-8 Yatala pies... $3 pie at a bakery though? you're mad if you need to use plastic for that.

Pie shop at Stones Corner is pretty decent and they have a bazillion different types. Fancy combos like Thai Chicken and Lamb and Rosemary and such.
Plus run by some little old ladies who know pies.
Also my vote for Muzza's on Old Cleveland and to a lesser extent Rock n Roll Deli Logan Rd.
Three decent pie shops all within a couple of k's of my house...no wonder I am a fat bastard.
And RE: the Yatala discussion, I also agree they used to be better. Although I am not a frequent Yatalair, I was a bit underwhelmed the last time I ate there. Same with Humble Pies. I like them before they were famous.
