Good afternoon all.

I would like to put it out there for the greater gaming community, that me, and some mates have spent the time and effort in renting and setting up a Quake 3 Arena service (from Sydney), and would like to encourage some players to this classic game.

Defaultly on Unlagged, we also have the ability to change to Instagib, DeFRaG, and other Q3 mods, we use custom maps, and for this auto-downloading is enabled, also, for faster speeds we have also setup an FTP server hosted in Melbourne for maps can be downloaded individually, or in map packs for less hassle.

Our community's TeamSpeak 3 is: 203.46.105.43:20170
Quake 3 Arena: 27.50.71.11:27960

So come by, have a chat and game on.

I have tried repeatedly to sign up for Quake Live but it just hangs up the downloading chrome plugin screen for me. There is a link to download but it just leads to a blank javascript page. I tried deleting all my cookies and temp files and stuff but it just refuses to work.

Sif use any other browser.

Yes, you can play QuakeLive for free, with forced advertisements, waiting times, and no new content, such as gametypes or new maps (of which I believe are just old maps re amped). ---- Unless you pay yearly for a game more than a decade old.

Quake 3 you can grab anywhere off a torrent site, have unlimited maps all gametypes, host your own server (even from your own house), with no advertisements and any mod you like. About the only thing in my opinion that QuakeLive has over Q3 is the statistics, but ID Software could easily fix that, but 1.32c was the last update ever, (unfortunately).

Rocket Arena 3 (1.76) is now installed, and can be switched at anytime from the services default setting of Unlagged/DeathMatch -- I tested it earlier with a few mates and all works (:

Yes floyd, that would rock. As for 30 people, that is possible, but we'll need to tell a few more of our friends, I've got 4-6 at the moment if we can all be online at the same time. The service is 10 slots, we can rent more space if required but we would need to be sure that it would be 15-30 consistent when playing, and giving the age of the game, that seems unlikely.

I would be more than happy with 4v4 / 5v5 CA.

Be sure to tell your friends or whatnot, as we can organize a time and date for it to happen. As always we're on TeamSpeak 3 : 203.46.105.43:20170 for if you require a channel for your team/organizing.

WishfulThinking, I would love to come play some q3 but i've had alot of trouble getting 1920x1080 at the correct aspect with 120hz on my lcd. If you could provide me with a solution I would happily come and play, but for now I'll stick to Quake Live which is still pretty active.

Hi there Imperial, great to hear you would love to play :)

I know of this small client-side mod that uses ioquake to use larger res's, just do a quick google search and download "ioquake3-WSGF.zip".

I've fiddled with isoquake before, i still recall the aspect being f***ed. Thanks whoop but i've played round with custom modes alot too but still have a funky aspect. I think there is an r_aspect or something but the values i used never changed anything either.

Didn't you just have to set cg_fov to higher values for wider aspect ratios?

I think the widescreen equivalents for cg_fov 90 at 4:3 were cg_fov 100 for 16:10 and cg_fov 106 for 16:9.

Interesting kos, it's worth a try. Is there a formula to calculate these? I used a high fov on my old 4:3 CRT (around 115-120).

I run 130 fov :P

thermite, yes there is a Quake 4, and there was also Enemy Territory, which I always jokingly said was Quake 5 :P

1.7? I'm not even sure how that makes sense.

You either use custom aspect or you don't. 0 or 1.

More importantly, has anyone been able to run Quake 3 on Windows 7 for a decent period of time without it crashing?

Yes, works perfectly... it does appear "dark" even when you try to change the in game brightness, to fix this you'll have to set compatibility mode to Windows XP SP1/2 or 3.

Properties>Compatibility Mode and you will find it there.

My Q3 looks fine, just keeps crashing randomly. Not sure why, because it is a clean install from the original CD.

I don't have mine set to any compatibility mode.

oh, I was referring to another issue that many users come across when playing Q3A on Windows 7, and this is where the brightness is down even though in the settings it is mid to high.

DEP as in Data Execution Prevention? (googled)

yes

right click "my computer" -> properties -> advanced system settings -> advanced tab -> "performance" settings button -> data execution prevention tab -> turn on DEP for all programs except those I specify -> add quake3.exe to that list.

I take no responsibility if you break your PC and / or other programs start going silly after enabling DEP for every program. Works for me, your mileage may vary.

I played Q3 against someone on this server a couple days ago and I copped a couple crashes trying to launch the game, but once I was up and running it was fine.

Lately a lot of stuff seems to crash. Steam, chrome. No actually it's just steam and chrome.
