Do you play World of Warcraft (WoW)? If so, you are invited to participate in a study investigating where massively multi-player online role playing games fit into the current internet usage literature and the psychological factors involved in playing such games.

This research is being conducted by Jodie Logan to meet the requirements for the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) degree, under the supervision of Dr. Anthony Miller (Department of Psychology, Macquarie University).

For full details and to participate in the study, please click on the following link:

https://macquariehs.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_553IJAnz4UEXWss

Participants who complete the survey will have a chance to win one of two AUD$50 Amazon.com vouchers. Furthermore, please feel free to advise friends, family and colleagues, over 18 years and who play WoW, of this study if you feel they might be interested in participating in the survey.

Many thanks and kindest regards

P.S. A big thanks to AusGamers for permission to post: sanctioned by trog 221214

The link is busted; I'm just liaising with Poss to get the real link to update the OP.

Yeah, your link has been abbreviated Poss (hence the ... in the middle of it) so it doesn't work.

Try putting it as an actual html link like:

I'm interested in seeing what type of questions are in this. I still play WoW but not as much as I used to.

Does filling out this questionnaire count as WoW getting in the way of my work since I'm at work and since I guess this is WoW related? :D

Haven't done the survey, but I love how the first page talks about WoW but then there is contact info for Lifeline and Counselling. I think we should always do that, everytime we talk about a game, leave a number for a hotline you should call to sort yourself out.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a first-person shooter video game, developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, with Raven Software having assisted in development. It is the third installment in the Modern Warfare series, a direct sequel to 2009's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and the eighth Call of Duty instalment.

The questions all seem very negative, like you're trying to show online games and WoW are bad instead of just trying to get an honest lay of the land.

But if the questions feel negative then just answer with a positive. Easy peasy!

I found that quite enjoyable, it gives me insight into how people perceive online gamers to be and how they think me (online gamer) acts in real life.

It's going to be quite eye opening to see the final results of this study =)

Proud to be a participant!

I think Khel is just basically trying to warn the survey publisher of potential confirmation bias with some of the questions.

Studies don't attempt to push points of view - you pose hypotheses and then test against them impartially.

The results will be out in November 2012. They will be available from Dr Tony Miller but I'll also endeavour to post them online here too. Thanks for taking an interest! :)

Thankyou to everyone who has taken the time to answer the questionnaire. Your support is much appreciated! :)

Please rest assured that we're looking at general trends so if questions don't apply to you, just indicate that in your answers. Thanks again! :)

I agree that the questions had a biased tone to them. Proper scientific studies should try to avoid biased questions in general.

Still, completed the survey yesterday.

I started to do the survey and the questions started to feel like I was being to blatantly psycho-analyzed so I closed it down.

Fucking academics, go solve some real world issues.

higgs boson? Accounting? Financial planning? Economics?

Maybe you work in a community which wears hats, grows beards, holds pants up by suspenders, and the most advanced technology you have is levers and wheels, but the rest of us in the real world use studies based around things researched in university. Go cry to your little sister why a arts student analyses it's because your mother didn't love you enough.

Seriously, all you do here is cry, about valve, about study, about qld justtce, about media blackouts, legitimacy of youtube video's. You're really negative you know?

Funny thing is you're not even being analysed, you're just a statistical point. lol.

Haha, how did you know I had a little sister? Trolling aside, I'm interested in seeing what kind of conclusions the OP would draw from the survey.

I do feel a lot of these questions are just over exaggeration and pointless, the friends slider is pretty iffy since what do you describe as friends? Can have varying levels, people's interpretations... i'd like to think i'm friends with the majority of my uni course since we've all gone out drinking, i've met and hung out with the majority and that's over 100... and that's just uni?

Dunno most of it wasn't a bias free survey which makes the survey in itself biased.... so yer dunno how it's gonna go.

Where's the question's like .. how many hours a week do you play games vs how many ours a week do you socialise, or go out with friends... or have relationships etc etc.. Do you play the game as an escape or simply as a hobby?

I don't answer surveys any more because they are almost always inherently flawed by the subjectivity of the people who write the questions, and draw meaning from the results.

The questions about socialising are even a bit iffy unless you can come up with a better definition of "socialising". Cos I'd consider a lot of people from my WoW guild friends (in fact theres a big get-together/pissup in the planning that people from all round the country are coming to), and at least some of the time spent playing WoW was what I would consider socialising and catching up with those people. Socialising doesn't HAVE to require face-to-face contact with people, you can socialise in a game, over vent/skype, whatever.
