Catch of the Day is having a pretty decent game sale with a huge number of bargain bin prices on even some big names in games. Check them out here.

COTD...notoriously fucking horrible. They never have enough stock. $10 says they've got like 10 copies of Diablo 3 up for grabs.

It's most likely an email harvesting exercise to get people on their newsletter and details forwarded onto sister sites / affiliates, since you can't view the site without entering an email address and agreeing to spam.

It's a great idea - have "limited stock" to encourage the scarcity effect. I have no doubt they're losing money on a lot of those products; they must've done the math and figured out that it is a more efficient way for them to get subscriber info than any other method.

I would like them to have to announce how many items they have so to figure out what my chances are of getting something. e.g., I can't believe they'd have more than around 10-20 copies of Diablo 3 if they're selling it at $20 - I assume they're paying $40-50 for each copy.

Loss leaders, just a standard practice in any sales business. Their cost of user acquisition would more than justify these unbelievably cheap sales. Take the D3 promo, if they had 100 copies and paid $60ea and sold them for $20ea it's a loss of $4000.

Cut that up into the number of people who added themselves to their subscriber list in the lead up and it's a great marketing exercise. Even at $1 per acquisition that's ridiculously low, much cheaper than any CPC campaign and then the re-marketing opportunities means you'll cover the loss made super quick.

I'm pretty sure the "Voted by you" part is 95% bullshit. From the list they had there were a few clear below cost products like the Diablo 3 or Apple TV but a lot of the other stuff was either reasonably priced or cheap shit like the thongs or bracelet that no one would have really voted for but they are putting up because that is what they always intended to do.

I'd say they picked the most popular below cost item and went with that and the rest they will just claim was voted for.

Still, I'm hoping for a cheap Apple TV or external HDD, but as a safety precaution I won't hold my breath.

Cock smokers, I bet that had like 5 in stock as I hit that page at exactly 8.00pm, added an AppleTV to my cart and went to checkout to get a message they were sold out.
