I did a quick search and I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned in the forums yet o.0
http://www.dayzmod.com/ - The homepage with forums and downloads. I suggest going here and looking through the newbie section.
For any of you with ArmA 2 combined ops (original game and expansion), there's a mod I just discovered the other day and it's FUCKING AMAZING.
It's in alpha, so a bit buggy, but the amount of immersion I've had in the game is so far unparalleled by anything I've ever played (And I'm not even exaggerating o.0 )
The servers run with about 40-50 people on the map, Chernarus, which is 225km squared. It has a real-time day/night cycle (going off server's clock) and is free-for-all pvp. Your character is saved on a main server so if you swap servers, you will log in with all your stuff and in the spot you were at in the last server (Note: after new patches, I'm often not where I was before). Oh yeah, there are vehicles too, but those aren't as fleshed out as they should be since they're new.
The basics:
You start out as a survivor, tossed randomly into the world with nothing but a torch, bandage and painkillers (previously had water bottle, a couple of food cans, some meds and a shitty pistol called the Makarov, but the mod dev is changing stuff up so it changes) From there, you're on your own. Your only goal is survival.
To find guns and food, you've got to scavenge around in houses and barns, or if you feel like being a douche, turn to a life of banditry and start shooting newbies.
Depending on where you go, you can often run into survivors, usually hearing them before you see them. These are the most tense moments in the game. Many a time I've spent 20 or so minutes tailing someone trying to figure out if they're friendly or a PKer, other times we've bumped into each other and had a tense mexican standoff where we both slowly back up, with guns raised, yelling at each other to "stop fucking moving!"
The big towns have better loot than the smaller ones, but you're MUCH more likely to find action with other players there. Bandits often go to the major coastal cities (Cherno and Elektro or something like that) in search of prey, which brings in the bandit hunters, trying to gain back morality points.
(OLD INFORMATION KEPT IN FOR POSTERITY AND LAZINESS) Basics of the morality:
When you start in the game, you have 2500 humanity. Killing a civilian will cause it to go down, killing zombies and bandits raise it back up. It can also tick up over time.
When you dip below 0 humanity, you get a special bandit skin (It's sorta desert camo looking) that lets people know to either kill you on sight, or run like a bitch. You're stuck with the skin until you get above 2000 humanity again.
It can be really hard to crawl back up if you go around killing people, but they often drop the best loot. Just be careful not to dip low, or get a reputation as a PKer or alot of people will try hunt you down.'
At the moment, humanity is tracked but doesn't show up anywhere and isn't used for anything. Bandit skins are non-existent now. Anyone could be a bandit, watch your arse!
The Zombies:
So the zombies are probably the buggiest part of the game at the moment (alpha is alpha) because they have really jerky animations and tend to phase through walls and stuff (though that's being fixed, hopefully).
You can (finally) outrun them by breaking line of sight, but they're damn fast. Best bet is to try run through a house with 2 entry-ways. They take 3 shots to kill with the makarov (1 with 1911 and revolver) and a single zombie can knock you out in an instant and kill you if you're not careful. At the moment, they tend to spawn as you come into towns, so sometimes you can clear a place, come back in a few minutes and it has a zombie in it again.
You have 2 stealth icons in the top right. One is an eye. This shows how visible you are to the zombies. Standing in shadows, crouching or going prone limit your visibility. The other one is an ear. Obviously, that shows how noisy you're being.
You can't crouch walk near them without alerting them anymore, after a recent patch. They have vision, based on where their body is facing. They can REALLY fuck your day up. I got a bunch of good items one life and then a couple of zombies tore me to shreds and I lost it all :(
Empty bottles and cans are almost a must have now, until the zombies are fixed. Throw one of these (cycle through with F) and zombies near the impact will go to investigate the noise.
Vehicles:
So very infrequently, you'll come across a broken down vehicle. These can include: Tractors, Bicycles, ATV's, Dirt-Bikes, Jeeps, Cars, Buses and even a Helicopter.
When you DO find a vehicle, they're almost always broken. You need to go hunting around to find the parts it needs before you can get it up and running, plus it also needs petrol.
I'd suggest if you want to get a vehicle running, google up some basic guides as it's rather in-depth.
Also, you know the vehicle can be fixed up if you're able to climb into it.
Dying:
This game is 100% hardcore. You die, you restart a new character with only the starter gear. Your old body will stay around for a while and be completely lootable (you'll hear flies buzzing around bodies of dead players). To start afresh, you have to hit the abort button and disconnect back to the lobby, count to 10 or so, then rejoin.
Final advice:
My trust reaches as far as the end of my gun barrel and so should yours. You can meet people in game who are nice, but you'll quickly learn that sometimes they act nice just to shoot you in the back later.
The official trailer - think it's old though couldn't find a newer one.
I meant to post about this because it looks awesome. The server requirements are ludicrous so there aren't many .au servers - I have been trying to get onto the team about it to see what can be done but apparently because it is in "active development" they're not willing to make too many compromises.

This video is hilarious:
Aye, I watched the entire series of vids in one sitting because the dudes just kill me!
I think the few servers up atm just bumped down to 40 people due to server load, but hopefully as word gets out, more clans will be willing to put a server up, or perhaps some of the big ISP's.
Also, it will hopefully get better with time, the game's still only at version alpha 1.5.6, so it still has a ways to go, plus I'm fairly sure it's gonna be coming out for ArmA 3 when that launches too (mod maker has early access, I believe)
Out of all the great engines they could have made this in they choose arma? ffs...
I feel your pain, but considering the scope of the map and the mod, I don't think there's really anything else out there that would support a mod like this as easily.
I only clicked the thread because DayJ and DayZ are similar names. Then because the youtube video was embedded 3 times i watched it. Then because it was entertaining i watched the whole thing.
Now i'm really interested in it and actually read the first post since it's in context! Good find!
The guy who did those vids (CHKilroy on youtube) is just a funny bugger, has alot of other stuff I've been watching lately.
Just got off an awesome session in DayZ where I sniped a bandit from about 450m away, had another mexican standoff that left me wounded and the other guy dead and also got to play overwatch for a guy I met who was trying to build a car.
If it wasn't for a server crash, I'd probably be writing this at 4am instead of 2am lol XD
I bought Quake 3 only because 3wave CTF was such a cool looking mod. I was thinking of buying ARMA II and Combined Ops to fiddle with this mod, do i have to buy both of them or is there a pack? I'm assuming ARMAII F2P is not a solution at all?
The requirements for this are soooo ridiculous though that it means they are really expensive to keep online. I am looking into options but one of the requirements is that the development team have access to the server, which I'm not able to give. I am awaiting a reply from the dev team about it to see if there's any middle ground.
I'd be thinking that most of this RDP requirement is because they can sometimes patch several times in an hour.. so maybe they just want to force push that latest alpha everywhere.
Also their site lists that later they're looking for a stand alone private server hosting thing.

Surely. I have suggested that they use our GameCreate software to do that (it is how we manage all the hundreds of game servers centrally :)
Character owned by Sa-Matra.
Character is alive.
Character has killed 913 zombies (388 headshots).
Character has murdered 1 other characters.
Character has walked 1227.7km.
Character has lived 34h 12m.
This is the kind of game you'd want a steam sale where you buy 1 for you and 3 friends for like 50 dollars so you can at least start playing in a small group together to get started. I'd be keen if someone could find the necessary prerequisite game for the cheapest possible online price and digital download.
The thailand one seems cheap but yeah i 'm not really good at finding stuff online and GMG didn't seem to have arma at all when i searched, then when i tried going through FPS's the site timed out. Odd.
I've been playing this heaps, kinda surprised that ppl on here seem interested, that's why I hadn't posted about it yet.
It's pretty damn good, I lived for almost 10 hours before some bandit cunt shot me in the face.
Stats for character 99538
Character owned by Trauma.

There are critical issues engine wise that come up, but then again Real Virtuality was purpose built for combined arms warfare and that's what it does better than any other. Arma 3 will make this mod shine, new animations and physics will solve a lot of issues. e.g. Do not climb a ladder with a pistol out or you will fall from the top as the animation to draw a pistol is much slower than raising a rifle. It makes you hang too long at the top. Things like this don't come up in normal Arma play as you almost never use a pistol.
The other thing is that this mod has no legs yet, you will get to a point where there is nothing left to do. This mod was only released to do some load tests... then it blew up like mad and the Dev (now a team) has been struggling to keep up.
Regardless this is a great proof of concept and shows a clear hole in the market.
Out of all the great engines they could have made this in they choose arma? ffs...
Name those other engines? I've never seen another that can do what Real Virtuality can do. Also the guy who made this mod works for BIS, so pretty obvious why he used Arma 2.
Without local servers I dont really know why people are rushing to buying this...
Ping is actually not a big deal in this, playing on US servers is no issue. It's not a run and gun game where twitch is everything, you will feel the pain of lag more when moving items into your inventory than you will shooing zombies/players.

You need Combined Ops (includes Arma II & Op. Arrowhead). If you want your character model in game to be high rez then you also need to buy the PMC DLC, but that is optional.
Surprised that steam is the cheapest you've found so far, rather counter-intuitive lol.
Stop, some of the bugs are just from the way ArmA 2 works. I love the game and all, but my god that thing is a buggy, unoptimized PoS lol.
Hopefully it'll get sorted in ArmA 3 (They are probably releasing DayZ for that as well, since I think the code is easily portable)
Not surprised that steam is cheapest, it's been on there for a long time now and BIS are not the type that inflate just to inflate.
How exactly is Arma poorly optimized? I hear this a lot but there is never any rationale behind it. And yes, Rocket (DayZ dev) has said that most of it will port pretty easy to Arma 3.
I think it's a term people (mostly non-programming types) have just latched onto to describe a game that doesn't perform as they expect.
It's very clear to me as a programmer than BIS have spent a fuck-tonne of time optimising everything. You cannot work with a map that size without really careful thought about every aspect of what is being displayed on-screen, what is being sent across the network to server/clients, etc.

Yea it seems that when it doesn't play like CoD or BF3 etc. they get all pissy and start to argue from ignorance... speaking of which.
it runs like ass and looks like shit on my system that plays BF3 on ultra.
BF3 and Arma 2 do not compare, the environments are far too small. I'm no programmer like Pinky but I can tell that Arma is handling shit loads more than any other game I've played. When BF3 is played on 225km squared and has at least a 2500m draw distance and does not sacrifice any of it's detail and capability while doing it then you can compare the two.
The fact that my middle range gaming PC can even run Arma 2 is amazing to me. The fact that for Arma 3 they're adding in physX and new lighting on top of the biggest map in Arma yet is mind boggling.
I made a 16km squared map in CryEngine 3 recently, with just the terrain and base textures it brought my PC to it's knees until I pulled the draw distance way down.
What trauma said. BF3 is arcade spec stuff compared to Arma. And its the reason i've been playing since OFP first came out. Some of the best gaming moments in OFP.
I have also played OFP, ARMA, ARMA 2 and OA. I love the game, but it still runs like a piece of shit.
@Trauma So you dropped the settings to make it playable... great, but that doesn't work with Arma, i drop the settings down and it STILL plays like shit. That is a poorly optimized game.

I'm running a Quad core Phenom 2 @ 4ghz, 8gb of ram and a GTX580 and the game struggles to play smooth (regardless of 1920x1080 or 1280x720) , while people with significantly worse PC's are apparently running smoother than me.
I tried bumping settings down, changing resolutions, turning off things like shadows and my game has never felt smooth.
When an average gamer says "unoptimized" they usually mean graphically. It should run significantly better on my PC than alot of other PC's, yet doesn't for some inexplicable reason
I run it at 1080p, all on high apart from AA, that's either off or on low but no post processing cuz I hate it, typically at a 2.5-4km draw distance. Though some missions (like DayZ) force draw distance for balance reasons.

I've heard ppl say this with the 580 a fair bit. It may be card related though I find that hard to believe.

I'm running at 1080p atm because it just doesn't seem to matter what I do, it's never gonna be smooth it seems.
About the only time I get smooth movement is when I'm on the coast, looking out at the water.
Also, the view distance seems to change on a server by server basis. Was really small on one of the aussie servers (like 500m) and atleast 1km on another, was weird.

I have no issue inland framerate wise, I get some slowdown when in the major cities. And if I'm scoped in and looking at something highly detailed then it can be a bit slow as it loads up the object detail while taking down my surroundings.
As for the variation between servers (assuming this is while playing DayZ) that is caused by the dynamic weather, it's fog.
I've been playing this all afternoon and fuck is it awesome.
The apprehension you feel when you spot another player is magical.
Agree. I spent some time last night in Cherno, taking out bandits and for a while after I shot, I was lying in pitch black shadows, in the forest around town, jumping at every snapping twig sound I heard.
Then I had a tense run across an open field in the moonlight and ran into another guy and we sat there yelling at each other for about a minute, then both ran in opposite directions lol.
The inventory system is infuriating, and buggy. I picked up a torch so it dropped all my gear on the deck. Then someone nicked it before I could fix the mess.
But the game has promise, so long as you know who you're playing with.

Aye, the inventory is annoying, but once you get the hang of it, it's atleast functional *shrug*
What's the deal with the voice chat in the OP videos? It looks like they can hear each other in a limited radius, is that the case?
Some annoying guys were piping up on global in my last game until everyone made them shut up, I'd really like it if you could chat globally but only be heard within earshot. And of course your voice should alert zombies.

Aye, it's direct voice chat. It basically sends your voice out in a limited range and is directional.
I've had some people say it doesn't work right, but I've used it a few times and it seems to.
A recent example is when I was raiding a barn and some random survivor guy came in and I yelled at him "Don't move, or I'll castrate you with lead, bitch"
Then I made him drop his loot on the ground and run away.
There are several chat/VON channels; they are Global, Side, Command, Group, Vehicle & Direct. There are two default keybinds that will cycle them; they are ',' & '.' - next to '/' which opens the chat field. I personally unbound those keys and use up and down keys when I have the chat field open. This way I never accidentally swap channels when going for the chat or map buttons.
Pro tip: Any map markers you set on the map will broadcast to the current chat channel you are in.
Pro tip 2: When the chat field is open, Page up and down will scroll the chat window.
All chat is proximity, meaning that if you are in side chat using VON but there is an enemy near you in game they will hear what you're saying. Using direct channel will only use proximity chat. There was a bug that was breaking direct recently that is fixed using this beta patch.
Thanks, Trauma. What sort of range are we looking at for "proximity"? Is the range affected by how loudly you speak? It would be awesome if whispering really had an effect on detection range.
It's about 50m, don't know the exact range. Don't know it will be louder if you talk louder, but the closer you get to the player talking the louder it will become.
Arma isn't magical, its not a huge technical feat to design a scene manager or terrain engine that can handle maps of that size, its just rarely necessary in games I guess so it isn't done often. And from the sounds of it, Arma could have done it a lot better anyway.
The mod does sound awesome though, how bad is the griefing?

PVP is a main feature of the mod. You soon inherit a deep untrust for strangers in the world, you may form strong alliances or just brief coalitions banding together in the face of a zombie horde but infighting is very common and deadly.
I teamed up with this guy who had a mp5. We were traversing a small village when he having run out of ammo with his mp5 I shot him in the back in quick succession and stole his pimpin gun and the rest of his shit. Was probably the greatest gaming moment I've had in 5 years.
Hahaha you dog Shaexan. But MP5's are rubbish imo, unless it was suppressed and you have sub sonic ammo.

It's the only engine that does it, but no feat. Nice logic.
I was bleeding out in a control tower. I ask for help... This guy offers to help. He asks me to go up to the top of the tower and throw some flares so he can see where I am..
Next minute a high velocity bullet penetrates my brain.

GAY
lol, You fell for that? If you're bleeding then bandage yourself, no excuse to not have a bandage on you, they are very common.
Oh, I was bandaged and all that, but when your blood gets to like 2000, you start passing out all the time.. I needed a transfusion.
If you find a hunting knife and a box of matches you can hunt animals, gut them and cook up their meat. 1 cooked meat gives 800 blood. Cows give 8 raw meat, less from smaller animals.
Baaahahahahaha, I'm awesome at finding sweet stashes of guns, sniper rifles, ammo etc etc then i hang around too long and someone kills me and steals all my shit!! DAMMIT
So just then I'm playing with these 2 randoms I met up with and we're running along the rail tracks at night (pitch black) but the guy with the chem light leading us keeps falling over because of blood loss. So he falls over and we all are just waiting for him and then all of a sudden hear a shot and I'm dead. Some prick from the shadows just gunned us all down.
Can anyone confirm, if this will work on ARMA 2 or do I need Operation Arrowhead? I downloaded the files and watched a tutorial video on how to set it up but gave up when the commentator kept mentioning Arrowhead & Joint Operations
It's a shame about the zombies being fast. Are they all fast zombies? I have to admit, I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to zombies. I prefer the inevitable slow tide of death that will ultimately kill you.
It's the only engine that does it, but no feat. Nice logic.
Skyrim does it, Oblivion did it 6 years ago, most MMOs do it like WoW or ToR or Secret World. Its like I said, most shooters don't do it because theres no point having tech like that in something like CoD.

That would be more AI for the server to process, Arma is already very demanding of servers. I've seen some full servers reach 1200 zombies at one time. That's a lot of AI to be handling on top of all the player actions and items.

Skyrims large geometry is nice but it's up close stuff is a bit meh, mainly due to poor textures and the draw distance is very short for objects. Large patches of trees pop in at about 200m, not a big deal when you're in the forest though as you view is largely obstructed. As for WoW and ToR, hardly comparable to Arma in looks and from memory it was very common for mobs to fade in and out at fairly close range in wow.
I got the Arma II combined operations pack (Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead in one bundle Also includes the Combined operations patch
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/4639/ $30bux
Installed Arma II First.
Ran it.

P.S. Re: Zombie Numbers.... hahah... you're all fucked. deeply fucked. Good luck.
just use the Filter bit in the server browser to set a list based on DayZ as the host name then throw in high ping amount of like 150 and it'll do the rest..
Fuck me, the lack of zombies on the weekend made it a big gank fest. Now you can't walk 10m without running into 10 zombies, going to change the dynamic of the game alot I'm thinking.
Only two <300ms latency servers and they are always full.
Also the mod is buggy as all fuck (or it might just be REALLY BAD netcode/hitregcode).
The inventory system is horrible. The default keybinds are REALLY non-fps standard. I guess they make sence to armaII fans.
Some questions so far:
1. Does anyone have a basic 'cheat sheet' of basic stuff you need to know like how to bandage, how to prone (default basic buttons) etc?
2. Is there any way to get a crosshair drawn?
3. How the fuck do I use the inventory system? What does clicking through the different shaped guns do? To loot a zombie do i look at it and press G ? then what? how do i know whats his and whats mine etc?

HAHAHAHAHAHA
Whining about your choice to buy a game specifically for an alpha mod, classic.
Maybe trog could shed some light on what it would cost to host an Aussie DayZ server.
1. Mouse wheel for contextual options, if you're bleeding and you have a bandage it will say "Bandage Myself". As for key binds.... maybe look at the key binds in options!
2. This is a difficulty setting, set by server admins, some server show it some don't.
3. The item list on the left will show all the items between you and what ever you are looting, they will have numbers on the left and right of them, left numbers indicate the quantity on whatever you're looting, right numbers is the quantity on you. The inventory system is not great for this sort of mod but you will just have to make do.
Only two <300ms latency servers and they are always full.
Mash enter while you have the server highlighted, I play tiny-tower on my phone while tapping enter and get in pretty quick.
Also the mod is buggy as all fuck (or it might just be REALLY BAD netcode/hitregcode).
I said it was an alpha. Alpha is alpha. I don't think the mod's even been around half a year yet. Work started in January iirc.
The inventory system is horrible. The default keybinds are REALLY non-fps standard. I guess they make sence to armaII fans.
They're not TOO horrible, but there's so many things in ArmA 2 that it makes sense there are lots of buttons :P The inventory IS absolutely horrid, but it's at the very least functional once you figure it out.
Some questions so far:
1. Does anyone have a basic 'cheat sheet' of basic stuff you need to know like how to bandage, how to prone (default basic buttons) etc?
Most of the stuff is context sensitive in the scroll wheel menu. If you're bleeding and have bandages, it will show up in the scroll wheel menu as "bandage myself" etc. Eating / drinking / most other things are accessed through that window.
2. Is there any way to get a crosshair drawn?
That's the server you're on. The other one has crosshairs, but also has the names of other people when you hover over them and can break the game pretty bad, esp when stealthing at night.
3. How the fuck do I use the inventory system? What does clicking through the different shaped guns do? To loot a zombie do i look at it and press G ? then what? how do i know whats his and whats mine etc?
Again, mouse wheel for looting generally. If you point at a corpse, you get an option in the menu to look at the gear on it. The numbers on the left side of the inventory list that pops up are what is on the corpse, so if they had a makarov mag, it would have a 1 next to it on the list (or 2 if it had 2 mags, etc) on the left hand side. Numbers on the right hand side show what's in your inventory.
As for the different guns, I take it you mean in the inventory? There are buttons there that toggle a filter so you can find stuff easier. Don't bother messing with them usually.
Your backpack is accessed by clicking on them in your inventory list and clicking the "open bag" button in the bottom right of the inv window.
Once you get acclimated, you'll do fine and settle into it.
I'll pre-warn you I'm checking this to see if it makes sense but it could all go horribly wrong!!!
1. Does anyone have a basic 'cheat sheet' of basic stuff you need to know like how to bandage, how to prone (default basic buttons) etc?
Ok, it actually might help you to go play the Arma 2 Tutorial first. Or Basic Training (to get a grasp of the real basics.)
But essentially, mousewheel contols your available options/action at a given time. Mousewheel button should 'use' or do whatever the highlighted option is (Get something, Open Gear, Drink water, Eat food, Climb Ladder, Open/close Doors) You may have to alter your view up/down/around to 'find' the desired action.
Basic movment/Stance are Z Prone (Slowest movement, least noise, Least visibility) X Crouch (standard movement, some noise, some visibility) C Stand (Fastest movement, most noise, most visibility).
Movement is w,a,s,d. LMB for shoot. RMB HELD is zoom view, RMB click is look down sights.
F to cycle Flares and gun. Flares are useful at night-time.
< and > Cycle chat modes. Generally stick to side chat, or the Blue one. Green or Global chat will incur the wrath of the server. If you have a Mic you might prefer Direct which is Proximity only Voip. I believe that you hit Caps button to chat but I haven't used it in game.
2. Is there any way to get a crosshair drawn?
Not sure what you mean you get a crosshair that widens depending on how much you've been running/moving. Unless you ended up on a Hardcore server or something then it should always be there unless you're looking down sights. Sorry can't be more help on that one.
3. How the fuck do I use the inventory system? What does clicking through the different shaped guns do? To loot a zombie do i look at it and press G ? then what? how do i know whats his and whats mine etc?
Inventory system works in two ways. On the right is your layout. Eg weapon you've got, Ammo, Equipment and a bag.
We'll start with the basics and how the dialog on the left relates. Listed on the left is everything you have (Quantity is the right hand column of numbers) and everything you can interact with right there and then. You're simply going to click right or left on each line of the item you wish to alter. Eg you want to take in a mag for the pistol so you click right.
The Right handside of the gear layout becomes important if you're moving stuff around from your Bag to your body (Lets just say they're pockets on your vest or something) Before you can put anything in your backpack (Where you won't have direct access to it, so the options those things offer won't be available), you've gotta move it out of your pockets (Eg by clicking the left hand arrow in the left hand dialog), then click your backpack, now down the bottom you can open bag, right hand dialog changes to number of slots available and you click the right hand arrow to put it in your bag.
I'm sure there is a youtube on it and if you get stuck I'll give it another go! :)
lol @ gamer complaining about wasting his money on an alpha game.
i actually purchased arma 2 aswell just for this mod, but i REALISE its an alpha mod and still in development (and no guarantee it'll ever be completed).
However before complaining, take some time to LEARN the freakin controls, theres a tutorial built into Arma2.. geez.
It's not so hard once you get the hang of it and used to it and realise its just different to other FPS's out there.
I havent had any problems with the netcode, i've stalked and killed people at distance on both local and foreign servers with no problem.
Awesome mod. Can't wait till the day it h its BETA! :)
PS Gamer was that you running around with flares on ANZ last night?
PS how to prone? really? you cant just goto the configure controls section IN the game?
You guys have been a tremendous help with getting this up and working and from your three posts before I'm already finding my way around alot better and enjoying myself more.
Your absolutly right that I have no right to complain about money on a alpha mod etc :) but that of course won't stop me lol ... after all it's probably the armaII engine thats to blame and thats had over 10 years to get it's shit together. Graphics are actually quite alot better then I have seen in youtube vids on my PC.
Thats very much for your help Trauma, WirlWind and Boxhead - when are you guys starting ausdayz.com.au ? :-D
I've got a Windows server on 10mbit in Brisbane if you guys want to setup a server on it... (peered to pipe and a bunch of other stuff). What sort of monthly bandwidth usage are we talking? Is there anywhere that shares stats on armaii dayz servers? Anything under 250gb/month sent should be fine. Would there be a way to configure it so only Australians and NZ can join?
Np gamer, glad you got over your rage. Just remember what you bought is Arma 2: CO.... that is actually a fuck ton of content you have there, it is worth checking it out when you're not playing DayZ.
As for bandwidth, AEF clan had a server up a while ago that they had to pull down because it was using about 160gb a day. I've heard monthly numbers around the 4TB - 6TB area, depends on how many slots of course, also Aussie servers are almost always full because there are fewer of them and some people chase the daylight, but ping limits handle that pretty well.
This is the main reason why there are so few Aussie servers, well more to the point it's the cost of bandwidth in Aus. You could rent a powerful box with 10TB/month for 60 euros... in Germany. More or less the same for the US, hence there being dozens of US/euro servers up.

np mate. also, sorry i didnt get to group with u earlier d^, the main database server that holds all the chars is amazingly slow atm. still not into the game yet lol
These quotes are from a thread Rocket (the guy who made DayZ) made about the latest update.
Patch 1.5.7 and this being an Alpha and fucking zombie spawns
Okay, so still people don't realize this is an Alpha. If you do not know what this means - go look it up on wikipedia RIGHT NOW.
When I fix one bug, many can crop up.
I fixed some zombie spawning bugs, time syncing bugs, and now there are alot of zombies. This became apparent in testing, but rather than delay the patch release by a few days (too many people are helicopter dying) the update was released.
So yes, the zombie numbers weren't my intention - but now that it is here, let us see how they play out. Maybe we might actually learn something from it or maybe everyone just wants to jump to conclusions in the first ten minutes...
Damn you video game industry for confusing consumers so that nobody knows what Alpha's, Beta's, or releases are!! Damn you!
But yes, lets all approach this with the spirit of experimentation. How will this ridiculous mistake affect the gameplay? I physically cannot release a patch for a few days (I was up all night with this, and I go to work shortly, and it's my birthday) - so regardless of how bad the situation is we're all just going to have to make do.
What a beast, patching DayZ by night; making Arma 3 by day.
You fire one shot in a town, you're dead. I didn't have a single tense moment with another player in towns tonight, just saw them, they looked at me, realized if they shot they'd die, then went on their way.
For anyone new to the game, this is about 3x harder than it's ever been, so stick with it.
I can't really comment on it yet as I've been geared up and inland since it was brought in, I'm sure it is a pain when you only have starter gear.
But if you're not shooting other players for fear of the zombies attacking... then BINGO.
If you're new to DayZ then maybe don't read this bit.
Spoiler: It's been needed badly from the start, once you get the hang of it, zombies actually are not a threat to you. Lead them into choke points to make them walk and they're easy kills and they can't actually hit you on the run. This coupled with a lack of direction after a while because it's an early build just leads to death matching. Increasing the numbers would be a band aid but it's better than nothing, I guess now it's just a question of how many more is the correct amount to make you really question shooting another player in town but still have you believe you can get away with it if you want it bad enough, I'm getting the impression that the current amount is a bit too high for that.
np mate. also, sorry i didnt get to group with u earlier d^, the main database server that holds all the chars is amazingly slow atm. still not into the game yet lol
Whats the go with being able to meet up in this game? Is there any way at all (apart from using landmarks and chat) to assist in meeting up?
I'm still not exactly covered on how to use voice coms to people not near you... or how to chat with specific people. Does it have something to do with the squad/mission select you get at the start before you get into the game? Can we all joint he same squad like in battlefiend and then have a chat channel to select with the , key called squad?
Let me know when you think you'll have an hour or two. I think the biggest problem at the moment is the lack of servers. 1-3tb a month I can handle on my servers but it'll cost me about $80-$150/month... so not sure if I want to invest that just yet.
For anyone new to the game, this is about 3x harder than it's ever been, so stick with it.
Hrmmm... yeah. I don't know about you guys but I've started seeing more teamwork between people because of this.
Not that it helps much because most of the AU/NZ people are connecting to the 250+ ms servers which are so laggy that most of your ammo is wasted trying to shoot a single zombie can be 1-2 clips!
Surprisingly I haven't been PKed yet. I've got a second PC setup next to my main PC with the google map on it haha.
Loving it, despite the drawbacks. Just like NS2 I think watching this mod evolve and living through the bugs (mass zombies!) and the tweeks (balanced changes / pk punishment implimentation) will be one of the fun factors of getting into this early.
EDIT: On a MASSIVE surprising note. I've been tryin to encourage my mrs to play more coop games - as opposed to the sims etc. Buying her Portal 2, Settlers VI, Left 4 Dead 2 etc etc. Nothing has really taken her. Yesterday she saw me playing this and immediatly she purchased armaII ... you've no idea how shocking this is for her. She doesnt spend money on ANY games. She literally yelled at me and said "WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME THERE WAS SUCH A THING AS A REALISTIC SURVIVAL HORROR GAME? not like that L4D2 action fps crap" - lol? ok - ddidnt realise you were interested...
Try and look for landmarks like the sea and stuff, which goes over the whole south coast. Once you find it, look for some landmarks, like lighthouses etc. Find a town and a map, that will help, or look at a map online. Thinks like railways crossing roads, little peninsulas are really easy to ID. Once you have your bearings, you can make your way to a town.
It will be dangerous, but you really need to stock up on your basic supplies, which are found in towns.. compass, map, watch, knife, matches, better gun, more ammo, food, water, medicine etc.
Once you're set, EVAC from the town and run around in the forest.. chance of dying, much less.
Yeah I've tried a manual update, no good. disabled my router firewall and windows etc etc still no go.
I'll have another go at it later but for the moment my patience has worn a little too thin :P
GON: So is ArmA II always going to be the base engine for Day Z, or are you considering moving across to its own engine, or...?
Rocket: Well, I think it’s reached a point of critical mass in terms of - well, it’s affected the bottom line of the company that owns the engine, the company I work for. And it’s also obviously raised some eyebrows in the gaming industry, otherwise you wouldn’t be talking to me! So I think it’s reached that critical point where either we would take it further, or someone else would. Or at least take elements of it. So I guess it’s just a matter of ‘when, by who, and with what engine’.
From my perspective, the mod will see itself out. It’s an experiment, so it will ‘experiment itself’ to conclusion, which I imagine is three, four months maybe. Maybe five. And then, I would see it as a game. But how that game comes about, people will have to wait and see. But I’m confident it will.

But then that removes half of the game, namely, the tension between players.
As I said elsewhere, if you want a game to kill zombies en masse, go play L4D. This game shines because of the player interaction, not the dodgy AI of meh zombies.
If you remove the PKing aspect due to too many zombies, the game loses all the drama and dies quickly as people get sick of just killing zombies and hoarding.
Hell, might as well just release it single player if thats your focus.
Hmm looking over the map today I have no idea where I am, all I know is I have about 4 flares left and a few clips of ammo?
Would love to get into it more, hopefully everyone flooding diablo 3 will leave a few empty slots.
I have played hundreds of hours on Chernarus... I still got fucking lost last night. I was genuinely shocked, missed my mark by like a full kilometer. Shit be dark.

I explained this a bit more in spoiler part of my post which I assume you didn't read. I'll explain sans spoiler.
Pre-update the zombies were too little of a threat and this made people seek a challenge beyond the zombies after a while, this obviously led to death matching. Very common for snipers to set up shop along the south coast to pick of new players, simply because they are either bored or just griefing assholes. The fact that the amount of zombies now is making you think twice about shooting that other player you saw is great, now it's just a case of finding the balance point between the current number of zombies and the previous number.
Yeah I jumped on a server last night and almost immediately found a body with an AKM, map, compass, toolbox, watch and other assorted goodies. Was sneaking through the middle of some town and saw a zombie. I felt cheeky so I shot him from the darkness only to be absolutely swamped by zombies and lost all my sweet gear :(

The thing is it's not making me think twice, it's making me NOT BOTHER thinking about it, because I know that if I shoot, I'll die. I'm not the only one, as I said. I ran into tons of survivors in 3 hours played time and not a single one even attempted to attack me, even on the roads.
It's basically as if they've turned on rebound damage in towns and for a good few hundred meters around them.
The spawn points basically become a fuster cluck of dead corpses because it's too much effort and not enough reward to go into a town and scavenge when you could just PK on the roads.
Also, I shot a single zombie in a field in the middle of nowhere and about 5 more spawned and surrounded me -_-
The really initial grind now is soooo hard.. I ran through 5 clips before i got even close to an enterable house :) Once i got into the house i got a shotty and a bunch of other cool stuff (Zombies got stuck on a table in the house so i was able to just plug them from the otherside of it!!) so maybe they've tweaked the drops a bit aswell? I didn't make it out of the town however!!
I reckon it would be cool if they set up loot in sort of a concentric circle pattern. You could have basic stuff on the outer rim like shotguns and hunting rifles to get players started in the coastal towns, and then have the circles set up to encourage people to get to the centremost city where some really choice shit could be. That could create a scenario of either the Survivors or Bandits controlling the centre city which would have all the military grade loot and heaps of cool vehicles and stuff.
I am really looking forward to seeing how the gameplay mechanics evolve in this game.

ArmA2:CO is TOP SELLER on steam. Win for PC Modding, validation of BIS company philosophy - Rocket
Pretty crazy that it topped it, right now it's second to Max Payne 3. Must have added a few hundred thousand so BIS accounts by now.

Yea my point is that it's gone in the right direction, just needs to be pulled back a bit, look for that sweet spot.
Decided I will only play on the vet server. I kind of like the idea of not automatically popping up in people's sights like you do on the regular one. No crosshairs is going to be hard to get used to, though. I am enter-spamming as I speak :(
I stumbled upon some bandit cooking meat by a fire tonight... sighted up with my M24, no more banditry for him. Always good to get the drop on bandits.
Also I wonder what the Max Payne 3 guys are thinking about this...
On the upside, there's apparently gonna be some work going into the next ArmA 2 patch that will make the mod run a little better, BIS are gonna hopefully help the mod maker out a bunch considering he just made them a few million (and he works there too).
OMG this mod sounds like pure awesome in alpha stages. Just reading it wants me to grab AMA2 specifically for this mod. I just bought Diablo 3 so I better hold off a bit still.
Sounds like it is only going to grow from here, at least for the next year or so.
There are rumours going around there will be a version made for Arma 3 but going by the whole it usually takes PCs three years to catch up to Arma's requirements plus the olde 'lol new version is shit compared to previous version' curse I reckon DayZ will extend Arma 2's lifetime by literally a shitload.

According to an interview I saw, it would take him a year to bring it over to ArmA 3 apparently. I don't think it's gonna be a simple port like we originally thought since they're making such huge engine changes (I assume so anyway).
From the sound of things, I think he's just gonna keep working on ArmA 2 since alot of the work has already been done.

Also, potentially dogs coming. Sounds fun *shrug*
I'm sure they could do it in far less time if they devoted more people to it, perhaps for a post launch payed DLC.
who'd a thunk it... you're a cock in games as well as Ausgamers threads... enjoy your endless queueing.
Karma is a bitch.
Also, I was more identifying that a lot of the 'problems' are from the original product moreso than the 'Alpha-ness' of the mod.
Hahaha you mad much? If someone is foolish enough to park their UAZ at one of the hottest spots on the map they deserve to lose it. In a game where people will kill you for your beans and extra ammo you think I'm not going to take a free and working vehicle? I'm thinking this mod is not for you.
If it makes you feel any better someone stole it from me, or the server was reset. Either way it wasn't where I left it when I got back on.
Respawns of zombies adjusted
New equipment interaction system from gear menu
Maybe more. Won't be patched now (its peak time, 5.5k concurrent), once it dips down.
Patch coming soon that will drop the amount of zombies, dunno how much though. Along with other fixes/changes. I know the bandit model system is getting pulled in favor of change you skin in game.
I've put about 16 hours into this mod... I would strongly advise you NOT to waste your money at the moment. Things to look forward to
- The 5 AU/NZ servers ALWAYS being full and having to spam them for 30min+ to get in. Joining any other servers = night time, which is fucking horrible.
- NO items fucking ANYWHERE
- After checking over 50 houses/buildings; finding that not a single fucking building has an openable door or room to loot shit from
- The most buggy and horrible hit detection known to man
- Zombies that can walk through doors
- An engine that allows you to get stuck 'turning around' because your have your arm out front pointing a weapon. Oh thats fucking fantastic you built your engine to recognise that impossibility of being able to put your hand through a wall.. but seriously in real life what fucking IDIOT wouldn't be able to turn in a doorway?
- The inability to find any of your friends
It's so fucking frustrating and just absolutely no fun past the 1-2hrs of novelty.
It's a shame the creator works on the dev of the ArmaII engine, judging from the node games interviews... it's doubtful he will move away from the engine because 'its made for this game'. So I don't expect to ever see vast improvements made on this in the next few months let alone the next year.

Thank christ for that.
Now all that needs to happen is the night's get a tiny amount of ambient light so it's not literally a black screen with white dots on half of it and then this will destroy my life more than D3 has.
When you only get to play at night, you get real sick of being blind 24/7 really fast, esp when coupled with millions of zombies.
rofl
given gamer's inability to grasp even the most basic concepts from the get go, I would suggest his massive disdain is a positive sign for anyone with half a clue how to play games properly that this will be a lot of fun. ironic nick is ironic.
I have put the game on hold till the zeds are fixed. It's fun sneaking through towns literally metres from zeds and scrounging items but annoying not being able to shoot anything because it means insta-death. Hopefully they will hit that nice balance point of enough zeds to deter tkers while still keeping it possible to go on a bit of a zed killing spree without a 100% chance of dying.

You and every other guy spamming to connect to a high demand server are the exact reason why they are laggy and have issues and crash. You're basically DDOS'ing that server. Especially the people who hang at load in and leave, then reconnect to the exact same server.... that's what causes the hang up. That behavior reminds me of the Far Cry 3 insanity monolog.
As for items, see above.
Arma 2 does not need all the buildings to be enterable, they prob limited that to help frame rates, we all know how people love to cry about that.
I have no issues with hit boxes.
Not being able to find people has been mentioned before, it's a tricky one cuz for new players they have no clue where they are and of course no idea which way to go to meet up, for me if someone said "I'm at zelenogorsk" I'd know exactly where they are and which way to go with out a map, once you have a map new or old player it should be easy, if not L2readamap. Honestly though I don't think the dev cares. It's meant to be a survival mod, make do. Pretty sure once the direct chat issues are sorted global chat is going to be disabled.
Fun Fact: Total play time for DayZ is almost 28 years.... later!
More Fun Facts from Mutonizer on DayZ forums;
- With 3.410.047km walked, we walked 85 times around the earth but barely a bit more than 5km per individual on average.
- For every ten survivors, bit more 9 died. This is a 90% mortality ratio, almost similar to some cases of the Ebola virus or the Marburg virus which makes the "Agent Smith" quote truer than ever: "A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure"
- With 104.484 murders, we have an homicide rate of 16% (not counting the death of outlaws I think). This is more than 300 times the homicide rate in the US and yet only slightly more than Lithuania's ratio of death during the WW2 where 14% of their entire population died.
- Counting all bandits, we have a 10% criminality rate. For some sort of comparison, let's say all these bandits were jailed, that would be 3 times the ratio of the US which is 3.7% of it's adult population being incarcerated, the highest in the world and of course very few of them are murderers. (around 50% for violent crime in state prisons).
- With close to 9 million zombie killed, we already cleared more than 10% of France's population, close to 3% of the US population, then entire population of Austria, more than twice the entire population of Croatia, or close to 3 times the population of Lithuania!! All in all, so far, we pretty much should have totally cleared out a small country of zombies.
- That said, it's only 0.6% of the population of China, which is a country you do NOT want to be in should the zombie apocalypse come!!
Unfortunately, the lull in peak time never happened. And I had forecast that the usual lull would be started now. That isn't happening. So we will try and figure out a way to roll out the patch but it is complicated.
There are so many people playing (over 6500) that if we auto-update the servers the reconnect load caused by everyone coming back on within the same period could, well, crash everything. We don't know if it is possible to handle such load, and I don't really want to try.
So we're coming up with another plan. But it will be within the next six hours assuming that testing has gone okay.
RE: Timing of Patch 1.5.8
Patch 1.5.8 delayed because I'm still at work, its 3:30am, and I need to sleep. Sorry guys, out tomorrow.
Played it for the first time tonight. Yep, night time sucks. Cranked the gamma and i could see alittle bit, then it got darker... and darker.
Its almost unplayable at night since you can't see anything, or anyone to meet up with. Randoms dont seem willing to flare up and expose themselves to "bandits" and i put myself out there with a flare and couldn't find anyone.
It seems i need to tee up with some mates and meet up somewhere rather than randoms :(
When the Zeds die off a bit (less than 100) EVERYONE starts to relax, a lot.
Meeting other players isn't as 'tense' as the video's depict, but actually establishing comms (by voice or text) isn't as straight forward as it seems.
Best to jump into TS or similar with a few mates and pray to god there are a few slots available on a server.
Its almost unplayable at night since you can't see anything, or anyone to meet up with.
i've played both day and night servers, and nights much better with chemlights, also much less chance of getting assasinated just walking through a field too if you don't light up at all.
Finding items during the day is much easier though, but so is finding other players.
The night will get a bit better when the moon starts coming out. The game has lunar cycles in it, so the moon is still quite small at the moment.
When it's out (eventually) it gets light enough that you can see outside without the need for a chemlight or whatever, though you still need them indoors.
I eventually see someone being chased and help them out and team up with them, but they really need the voice working better.
How close can you get to a zombie in crouch without them seeing you?
How long or far away do you have to run for zombies to stop chasing you? I had 2 crawlers chase me around for nearly 10 minutes in to the bush. I thought I lost them and eventually they caught up, luckily I had found a crossbow by then and killed them.

They don't stop.. They're zombies.. they want to eat you!

* This is a pretty major update. I don't really know what affect the new sickness and temperature system will have on player behavior especially with antibiotics being so scarce.
* It is the genesis of an idea, so please remember this might cause havoc. You need to be careful.
* To light a fire, you need matches and wood in your inventory. Place more wood in the inventory of a fireplace to keep the fire going.
* A fire that does not have wood in it will go out when you try to light it.
* You can tell you have an infection, because your character will start coughing. The infection causes you to loose blood down to a minimum of 6000. This leaves you with reduced blood until you take antibiotics.
* [NEW] Server cleanup system replaced with a more agressive one
* [NEW] Inventory Interaction system (right-click on items in gear screen to bring up interactions)
* [NEW] Temperature System now implemented (effects are limited)
* [NEW] Chance of catching an infection the lower your temperature
* [NEW] Chance of catching an infection from already infected players
* [NEW] Water can be filled in ponds, all water pumps, wells, but not the sea
* [NEW] Forced disconnection saving for abort and alt+F4
* [NEW] Zombie's will investigate player deaths
* [NEW] Adrenaline rush from panicing causes greately increased hunger for a while
* [NEW] Bandaging Sound when bandaging yourself/someone
* [NEW] Coughing sound when you have an infection
* [NEW] Camera Shake when temperature drops extremely low
* [NEW] PROTIP: Use Global Chat/VOIP in populated areas
* [NEW] Fire requires wood to keep burning
* [NEW] Various Loot spawn balancing changes
* [FIXED] Should not be pellets for the Winny
* [FIXED] Whinny is way to powerful and quiet (mmmm your tears will be delicious)
* [FIXED] Helicopter loot despawning too fast
* [FIXED?] Too many zombies for the Carebears to be able to play
* [FIXED] Fog is way too thick
* [FIXED] Climbing a ladder with a pistol will cause you to fall
* [FIXED] Zombies not attracted to Flares and Chemlights
* [FIXED] Panic noises going apeshit all the time
* [FIXED] Zombie spotted alert far too quiet (increased slightly)
Changelog:
* [FIXED] Loosing temperature way too fast
* [FIXED] Not enough wood available for spawn
* [FIXED] Matches way too rare
* [FIXED] Reduced impact of infection (coughing amount and blood loss, will only loose 2000 blood)

Bandit/Survivor Morphing to be removed
As the title said, the Bandit/Survivor morphing will be removed. You will find skins around the world, that you can wear if you choose. Humanity will be retained for an undisclosed purpose.
Because humanity is the feature DayZ deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll remove bandit transitions, because its not helping. Because its not a good feature. Humanity remains as a silent guardian, watchful protector. An ... unfinished feature.

aw damn, murder rates are going to go through the roof. not that you'd normally see a bandit before they start shooting at you. but i liked how you'd become a target as a bandit, so you've got to weigh up the benefits of theifing others equipment, especially noobs.
Well it can go both ways, if you're a bandit then you think fuck it, kill em all cuz they will shoot me on sight... no bandit skin give them a chance to not kill. But some will still kill you on sight of course.
Well, I just went AFK in the woods, prone to make a cup of tea... come back and I'm dead. Who ever took the cheap kill got some serious gear out of it. Cunts. Had that character since 1.5.6.
I tailed some bandits last night on a server in Dallas (so it was Daytime there) and lost sight of them near a barn.
Heard a few shots and zombies scrambling past the barn so I thought great, time to loot barn, scored a winchester.
Set up outside the barn to wait for bandits to come claim the loot, didnt see them, headed back to the barn and they were there in the doorway and popped me :(
Trauma that sucks hard. The servers up to the new version?
Yeah, the servers are pretty much always up-to-date because I think the dev pushes the new files out to all the servers at once.
Also, Winchester ammo is so damn scarce now :( The zombie spawn rate is perfect though.
Shame, my char logged out in a building in elektro before the patch and came to at a small town in the middle of nowhere and I was shot by a sniper on the hill ;_;
I've put in a fair few hours, really enjoying the game so far..
Mostly been on my own, exploring north, i've been all over the map now, stay away from the airfields if your on your own.. snipers everywhere! :)
I've set up a tent and been storing loot there, hasnt been discovered so far.. i've managed to stash away a few M16s, AK47s, MP5s and a bunch of ammo.. still out to get that elusive GPS.
I think my preferred weapon for hitting up towns is the Crossbow, I prefer not to kill any zombies, i prone my way through the towns searching for loot and if a zombie gets too close, i just use the crossbow for a silent take down.
here's a good tip, if you want to know if you can enter a house from a distance, just look at the windows.. if the windows are transparent and you can see inside, you can generally enter the building.. if the windows are not transparent and just reflective, its a no-go. Doesnt apply to hangars and stuff with no windows, obviously. :)

sLaps_Forehead that video was great but out of all the time i've spent in DayZ... nothing even comes CLOSE to that gameplay.
How the fuck they arn't bugging out hardcore like everyone else does I don't know. When he got hit through the wall though that is very typical of the bullshit you see in the game engine. Zombies walking through doors/walls to attack you etc.
A great video of team gameplay at night though. The moon makes a massive difference (unless its just super high gamma?)
If you have a character that has been a bit of a dooche and killed lots of people and have a low humanity, when they die does the humanity score carry over to the new character?
Also for gameplay reasons it makes sense to kill anyone onsight since that last patch?
If you have a character that has been a bit of a dooche and killed lots of people and have a low humanity, when they die does the humanity score carry over to the new character?
So since the latest patch Humanity is currently tracked but does nothing for now. So in a later patch when they add it, suddenly a stack of evil doers get punished in what will be likely a creative and fitting manner. Vampires maybe that need fresh human blood to live, that take damage in the sun?
I'm convinced on getting this now. It just seems too much like how a zombie survival game should be and should recreate many of those b-grade movie moments.
suddenly a stack of evil doers get punished in what will be likely a creative and fitting manner.
I've only had 2 kill 2 people. both in self defense (real self defense, as in they started shooting, not they looked at me funny), I've been killed by other players about 4 times though, but only once when i had anything more than the starting equipment.
first one was a survivor, my humanity went down to 400, it didn't move (after several life/death cycles) i bleed out shortly after.
second one was because a bandit shot at the wrong person. (he must of been really pissed too, because he got the jump on me, had me hiding in a barn with no exit and half my health, he had a full auto weapon with scope and i had a starter pistol.) i bandage and morphine up in the barn while closely watching the doors and windows for movement, after sitting in the barn for a good 20 min, i figure the bandit has gotten bored or something so i go to leave, i dash out the side door and try to go around the far side of the barn for more cover when i hear "crack crack crack" (with the wizzing sounds of close by bullets), i glance back around the corner and hear another "crack" then "thud" (must of hit the wall), so i continue around, go wide and flank his right behind some low walls. as i go around the corner to face the barn again the bandit is headed straight towards me but i was ready this time, i nailed him in the chest about 4-5 times before he got a single shot off, which thankfully missed... thankyou bandit for all the equpment, and for putting my humanity back up to 2000, unfortunately that character got mauled by zombies in the typical fashion (someone with a hoard of them runs past your cover).
OK, I'm pretty much going to grab this from steam.
ArmA 2: CO
Is there anything I need to know before I do so?
- Watch install vid (I posted it in this thread) to get it running sans rage.
- Remember it's alpha.
- I personally get the beta patches but I dunno how those or normal patches are handled via steam.
i REALLY want to get this game, but is it worth getting at this stage? I've heard there are still a lot of glitches and just general bugginess to it. Anyone on QGL starting up a group for the game or something? I haven't read through the whole thread yet, so just asking now.
last night was frustrating for me but you guys seemed to have fun.
I followed two equipped guys that looked like they knew what they were doing, then the killed me.
On respawn, I got some decent equipment from the church, then I helped some random guy fight off 10 zombies that had chased him to the beach. He bandaged up then killed me. Next time I think I'll just wait it out then raid the body, certainly won't be running out to help randoms.
We did an AG vs the whole server, anyone that wasn't us was a shoot on sight. fpot and myself got the jump on a bunch of guys on a road by a camp fire. We owned one of them and the other one legged it.
I joined into a server (after avoiding the game for a few days, in short I got ganked by Zeds and was waiting for some mates to meet me out at Zelenogorsk with some blood transfusion bags) and whilst I'd come back into the server with 12000 blood (w00t I only had 1000ish blood) BUT it put me back on the coast (instead of 'half-way to the military airfield').
So anyway, here I am, crawling into Chernogorsk, scoping out the terrain in front of me.
There's a group of guys who have identified themselves as 'between Cherno and Elektro' and I decided to push on regardless.
On my way into Cherno, I hear gunshots coming only a few hundred metres from me and turn to spot a Bandit, with an assault rifle honing in on the position described by the group of survivors I'd just left.
I moved to intercept and managed to find him exposed on the face of a hillside where he was watching the group for a few minutes, I took aim with my Lee-Enfield, and pulled the trigger, striking him with the first, and killing him with the second shot.
THEN, he just fucking quits, and as such his corpse disappeared too.

/me is so mad.
Nice kill but him quitting did not cause the body to despawn, it's a bug in the current version that has been fixed for the next version.

Probably a good 3.5 hours wit ha previous 2 before that. I had raided apartments near the hospital in Cherno where 2 guys gave each other a blood transfusion. So I killed them and took their stuff.
Anyway I decided I had heard a lot about this military base near the NW airfield, so I begain my trek. Eventually I was running low on supplies and stopped in Mogi and got sprung by zombies. Decided to leg it and ran in a vaguly northwest direction. Night time fell around this time. I ended up coming across a small village near a castle and needed to find some beans or wood (I had raw meat). So I was looting this building when all of a sudden a flare fires up. I freaked out and legged it into the forest and started to do a wide circle..
I eventually got shot during tha skirmish, was epic. turns out the guy had no supplies left at all and he killed me with his last 3 bullets. Well played.
Developer's Note:
* To collect firewood, you can either find it in loot piles, or go into a forest and use the hatchet (gear > Right Click). I will expand this mechanic but its enough for now.

Gender change is a one time thing, the dialog when you login. If you don't select yes then you will not have the option to change again.
Knowing that Arma itself does not support female soldiers I'm kinda worried about this.
Really have to try this mod, sounds like it would be a heap of fun with my mates at our LANs. Are there more Australian servers now due to the mod?
There is about 10 Aus/NZ servers but they are very high demand, it makes it problematic (slow) to join them at times. Earlier tonight I loaded it up and all local server were full.
Playing as Mr. Furious usually on ANZ4. Hit me up if you see me. Getting harder to loot Chern and Elektro now everybody is shooting strangers on sight.
Getting harder to loot Chern and Elektro now everybody is shooting strangers on sight.
no kidding, i was sneeking around looting cherno, got into a fight with the missus about how i don't do anything else but play this game anymore, so i get up and grab her a drink, and before i can respond she is on my computer and shoots out a window. just a single shot, but that was enough of an invite to say "hey everyone, I've got an AK if you can take it from me" I'm just happy i really hurt the guy who came for it, but he still killed me :/
my best character.... i was just grabbing matches so i could survive a long stint in the bush.. :/
I'm so shit at this game but I love it so much. Really need to run with some people that know what they are doing
How do the tents work? There was one setup outside the hospital but I couldn't pick it up or do anything with it, and it crashed my UI. I was miles away but it kept appearing on my wheel spin, until I died and quit.
Open the game through steam.
Set your steam interface to Shift + ` (key next to number 1, tilde key but without shift held)
Open the steam web browser and steam chats, in the web browser open this map - http://avidblur.com/arma2
Have both side by side. The map is fully zoom-able. It's like using Google maps. The in game map sucks.
I'll post a screenshot later of how it looks. But this is seriously how I play now.
Will do, for anyone in here we roll with a few guys when we organise a meet up, usually through steam chat. I've had the pleasure of playing with Toll and fpot, captain lateral added me too but we haven't had a session. Looking forward to all of us getting together and having a good session.
Installed from stea. ran arma2, ran arma 2 OA.
did Dayz files as per install tutoiral etc. et.c
get to server browser fine, start launching to play, just get booted back to server browser. anyone with any ideas/help?
Did you unzip the files in to that folder? that was my first mistake
Otherwise make sure you set the properties on OA and then don't run it, right click and select the thing from about 4 down below 'run in window mode', that's like 'run' but slightly different
Ah I did a manual btatleeye of OA in the directory seemed to fix it.
Now... dear god the controls, its building a timemachine to do stuff!
almost every button is used. Are there some redundant commands not used in dayz? for exmaple "commandfire" or something in the controls menu, I'd like ctrl for crouch rather than whatever that is for e.g.
Yeah I've got the hang of the controls now and the inventory.
Still getting used to the ranges Z's will attract onto you.
I'm also terrible at killing them, but haven't found anything more than starting Makarov :P
Havne't played *too* much yet, I'm approaching airfield I expect to die horribly here :P
The blurryness of everything was killing me for awhile (everything maxxed with post effects off) but got used to it.
The game is survival against other humans. That is the charm of it. Zombies are just there to kill the stupid, to make it so you have to think about shooting in cities and whatnot.
I believe the plan is to slowly add more PvE stuff to make survival much harder. Sickness, temperature have been added and will be expanded upon and I bet my starting Makarov they will increase the speed you get hungry and maybe reduce food availability too.
Killing zombies for the most part takes only 1 shot to the head. Sometimes the server is a bit slow to show their death, but in general if you see blood then you hit them, so give it a couple of seconds. No need to waste precious bullets.
Also the game very much needs you to set your own missions beyond just plain surviving. It is kind of easy to just hide in the bushes and occasionally get beans n water.
Soon they will re-enable vehicles and that will give something more to do. If you are going to survive you may as well do with style.
Also NVG spawn in the game rarely, I plan on getting one of those. Military zones only.
Playing with another friend is SOO much more interesting, you have more options. It is also amusing having to find each other, I love using the online maps trying to get a baring of where you are. It is really satisfying to go from one town to another far away and not get lost.
Sometimes you do get lost when you have to bolt because someone is shooting at you or you agro'd too many zombies and unprepared for it, particularly when you go north into the deep forest. Even more so at night. Night is pretty hardcore to play in, not recommended until you really get a feel for the game. There are a couple of ANZ servers that have 'reverse' time. So our PM is AM in game. It allows us to play daytime during night.
lolwhat?! I met up with a guy in the airfield tower, then I was just standing there and broke my leg. Guy gives me morphine.. we start heading off then I just magically instantly died 2 minutes later (guy was in front of me and hadn't shot me or anything afaik).
Weird bug/lag?

i've had random breakages from moving wrongly, normally in doorways, something to do with the hit box being compressed when you rotate, i'm sure it will get fixed eventually,
but running along and dying instantly is you getting shot in the head i'd say.
I've had a death by geometry. Sucks, o well, Alpha.
However if you died just running along, you may have been sniped.
From what I understand, server that have been around for a while still have vehicles. New servers, such as most of ANZ if not all, have them disabled.
My understanding is that since vehicles do not respawn at all then once they have all been taken or destroyed then you won't find any. The ones that are a fixed up and still alive will be hidden away when not in use. So, for a server that has been up like 1-2 weeks then forget finding a vehicle unless you luck out and find a working one that a player has left.
I've had a death by geometry. Sucks, o well, Alpha.
It's got nothing to do with "alpha" at all.
Your talking about the game engine fucking up. The game engine that has been around for 10+ years. I think they've had more then enough time to fix it.
This whole mod is going to turn into another minecraft where changes and bugfixes never come, even after months and years and despite the mod author being part of the engine project team.
Not because the mod author doesn't address them but because they will be part of engine bugs that will never get fixed.
It's shown a proof of concept to the world and hopefully some indie team will pick it up and realise that persistent non-mmorpg worlds are a good idea. Especially in the survival FPS genre / horror.
I'll be waiting for that to come around or major advances in the arma engine.
I noticed Arma3 is coming. Is that just a major fork of the arma2 engine with new lighting and day/night? That's all it really looked like.
The first thing I do when I spawn is catch the town name that appears at the bottom right hand of the screen and find it on the map. Then I follow the tracks towards Chern to get geared up. You can usually find a new backpack on the top floor of the restaurants there and there's also a military compound across the road from the hospital where you can find a new military grade primary if you're lucky and a ton of medical supplies and chem lights. Just be careful if you hit the compound as dudes often camp the roof of the hospital and snipe so you might want to scope the area out before you enter.
Ahh, so far this life I've made it from Kamenka, through Komarovo/Bolena. Through Cherno picking up ~6 blood + enfield etc. through elektro grabbing a 1911.
All the way up to Kuroy Cap and up through Solnichniy, eastward with a friend into Msta, getting lost in the woods in the darkness and winding up back north of Elektro via Topolka Dam.
Played overwatch in elektro for awhile and transfused a random guy.
Mate of mine got killed on the outskirts of Elektro by some assbandit (named switch), killed him/aveneged. Scavenged Whinny back off my mate then he spawned at.... Kamenka >.<
So back eastward I have gone, back via North fields of Elektro, Through Prigordky, through northern tips of Cherno and met back up at Bolena airstrip :)
Still alive and kicking and now we're armed up with AK + 3 mags, Enfield + 40 rounds, 1911 + 4 spare mags and Whinny + ~20 rounds.
Next time we head north :)
I know your character develops hunger/thirst while you are offline, but is it only to the point of max hunger/thirst so that when you log in you start losing blood?
Or will you die if you don't log in to eat/drink?
From what I've found is when i've logged on I'm just super hungry and super thirsty. If you are unconcious or losing blood or both, that is a bug.
I always have at least 1 can of beans and 1 full canteen for when I log back on.
My game last night had me start west of the map. About 2 cities west of Cherno. So I decided to make the trek to the NW Airfield, stopped off at many deer huts along the way, at least 6 (pfft who needs a compass!). A shopping centre then made my way into the NW Airfield. Raided a Military base and moved to northen end of the airfield, ready to circle to the otherside and start picking through the goodies on that side.
I have a m16, a g17. The g17 pistol is EXCELLENT for poking through things amongst zombies. It is really quiet so if you have to kill a zombie, you don't attract the entire town, usually just 3 or 4 close by zombies. Highly recommened, and it comes with a light attachement.
watch, binoculars, matches, hatchet, hunting knife, map, 6 pieces of cooked meat, 4 canteens of water, alice pack and lots ammo. I'll be so sad when I die.
I have no idea where I am now, I ran north west and am now at a huge river / damn with a lot of mountains around the area. No players anywhere to be seen. It took me a good 30 mins to an hour to get where I am non-stop running. I found some town which had ridiculous amounts of zombies but no players from what I could tell. I'm fairly remote now but good with supplies so I can back track.
Great game and I would recommend it and ArmA 2 to anyone.
Best map I've found so far is: Day Z Map. If you hover over the stuff on the right it tells you what kind of equipment you're likely to find in those structures.
This one is a little more detailed with percentages of loot spawns including type of weapon and chances of it spawning
Hmm having both open may be handy, twisteds for quick reference

1.7.0.0 is being released with some ANZ servers running it already.
It has changed the server architecture so that it is far, far more streamlined to join a server. So much so that 90% of people are reporting loading times from clicking to join a server to being in-game is 10-30 seconds. Much better then the 1-10 mins of previous versions.
FPS lag is also apparently fixed, as is a few other things. Yay.
what's the go with the day/night cycles? was just playing on a few different ANZ and NZ servers and it's the middle of the day and suddenly all the ones I'm joining have gone night time.. is there any way of knowing without joining the server?

did you have to install the arma 2 beta patch?
before I did that and only had the 1.7 dayz version it was telling me my game wasnt up to date. did the beta patch and it connected to the servers but just sits there doing nothing

Try another server I was on 3rd oldest beta patch version (updating now) and I got in and able to play.
Can't wait to give it another go tonight, though I have no clue where I am. I'm next to a massive bed of water with an island in the middle of it, somewhat like a river splitting. Mountains all around, hopefully I can work it out tonight.
I don't have the beta arma patch but just ran 1.7 fine
Those maps make my game experience so much better. Just been through cherno and I now feel like I have a chance with non default guns and some supplies.
I've been alive close to 24 hrs now. No murders to my name, only because I haven't come into firing range of anyone. There was 1 guy that was off in the distance and we watched each other. After about 5 mins we went our own ways, 10 mins after that we chatted on sidechat and found out there was another person watching us. Creepy.

Haha. You would be amazed to learn how many times you have been spotted unaware. My most satisfying murders are from stalking a player from village to village, house to house until I'm close enough to riddle his back with colt 45 rounds. The feeling you get when your busily looting a fresh kill is some primeval shit.
finally managed to join an ANZ server and then lost connection to the host after 2 minutes. the good news is I spawned with beans and flares and water! the last new character had absolutely nothing on him. totally jewed.
now it will join and then just sits on a blank screen with "retrying to authenticate" message
or get's stuck on the Loading screening.
1.7 hates me :(

Someone posted the same on the dayz forums and Rocket said they had not updated as that part of the code was removed.
liar! well I extracted and replaced the code files in the dayz folder so not sure what else I can do.
ANZ2 won't let me in either, says I have the wrong version even after applying the ARMA2_OA_Build_93160 patch.
I don't know. Have applied both patches.. it replaces the files in the dayz folder so not sure how I could be running the old version but who knows.
been running around on a different server mowing down zombies with a winchester. thing rules. found a tent and a watch. If i set up the tent somewhere and ditch everything in it then get myself killed and come back with full health.. will it be there or is it tied to your character?
much better session then. managed to get a watch hatchet matches and binos. plenty of ammo for the enfield and a revolver. been going between deerstands hoping for a better military gun, keen to steer clear of the airfield for now. went to chern briefly to try to go to the hospital.. can you actually open those doors somehow? my vision was fading in and out so got out of there after raiding the houses surrounding it. saw one other guy with an ak but he was busy being chased by mucho zombies so didnt have a chance to pop me. need more wild animals to kill for blood.
If I even heard a helicopter I'd be very scared. Probably take a pot shot or two just for the sake of it, but I'd be out of there fast.
How come that video looks so good? What video card is that? I have tried runnning very high, high, medium and low and they all look like crap or run like crap (560ti)
Also, No one has explained tents yet.
I was at the firestation in Cherno, and someone had barbwired the inner ladder area to the second floor. How do I get through that?

Tents can be placed where ever (hide them best you can) and you can then store items in them, they will not despawn but they will be bound to that server. Other players can find and loot whether you're online of not.
As for the barbed wire, sometimes you can step over it (default key is V) and if you have a tool box you can cut it but it's a pain in the ass to get the option in the menu, bad hitbox. Personally I think they should be removed as they are only used to grief players. They do not stop zombies or vehicles, only players. That's why you see them blocking the entry to high value areas.
Also that vid looks about the same as my game looks, I also have a 560Ti.
yeah game looks like that for me and runs perfectly, 560ti also
lol 5 of us were just on the hospital roof at elektro, agrod the whole town.
do they spawn faster than you can kill them? seems like they weren't gonna stop so left the server :/
I had a player named Buzzy on ANZ try to ambush me last night. He was begging for a blood transfusion and then when I arrived to deliver his buddies were shooting at me. Watch out!
I got a question, does anyone know where I can get a copy of ARMA 2 Combined Ops on disc?
I can't download it as per quota usage...don't have enough to download it but if someone knows where i can get a physical copy of this I'd be more then happy to pay.
I've searched Ebay and the big retailers but with no luck. Hopefully someone knows =( I really wanna play this =|

You could get this. They don't have CO in stock so that's the next best option.
Slaps.. its another player spawning in.. he must've logged out there.. silly spot!
Yea I've had that happen but in the barracks at NW airfield, put a shotgun round through his head. Also anyone else notice that was a female survivor and he proceeded to shoot her between the legs many times...
Unrelated: Little interview about Arma 3 here from GON.
Alright i purchased it through steam after much deliberation and alot of effort to see if there was anyway to get it. Does anyone have copies of this on disc i might be able to borrow? Its basically for an install or if you could stick the steam backup files on a disc or some other thing i'm honestly not sure whether anyone would be nice enough to do that but i can send it back once done if needed. Anyone interested in helping a fellow apocalypse survivor? D:
I would like if possible a steam backup of Arma 2 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead, i have steam keys for these already i just have no way to get the install files that is all ;\ like I said steam backups would be the best option =)
ugh. really not a fan of the way it's just turned into deathmatch in the towns. as it stands there is absolutely no penalty for killing people, should go back to bandit skins at least. no incentive to not just kill everything.
I'm not liking the direction it's taking in regards to player kills either.
The main issue is that the zombies are not dangerous enough, on top of that direct coms broke for a while and the bandit system instilled a banditry mentality. Now that the bandit skins are gone everyone just assumes the other was a bandit and shoots on sight. Even with direct working again on beta servers I feel like I should not use it as I would just give my position away. Needs to have some consequences introduced for player killing, but not so much that no one will kill and they need to be believable.
...Also anyone else notice that was a female survivor and he proceeded to shoot her between the legs many times...
I noticed he shot another player without even offering them a chance to identify themselves (and I'm not referring to the 'friendly?' type BS that goes on in the game).
My question relating to the above quote Trauma is, would you have brought it up as a topic in this thread had it been a male player he'd shot in the groin repeatedly?
I'm not liking the direction it's taking in regards to player kills either.
Internet gaming has always had a certain 'lack of consequences' to it... as far as DayZ goes, being 'covert' in general is essential IMO. And whilst I'm far from 'covert', I keep as low a profile in-game as practical. I'm yet to be backstabbed/sniped in the game. In fact the only violent player interaction I've had was to intercept (because I spotted him shooting/running), tail and kill a Bandit who was making a beeline to a small group of start-out survivors who were discussing their location and destinations 'globally' in game.
There are lots of people who yo can 'place your trust in' and for the most part I guess I have been lucky.
The bottom line for DayZ tho is (again... IMO) once you've managed to live around/amongst the Zeds... what else is there? my only answer is that 'hunting other players' is essentially where the 'end-game' is for DayZ.
I'm too keen to repair a vehicle and then get a helo up and running to be bothered in harming newbs/respawns... it seems not many other players share this view of the game tho...
Nice find in the MAG58... do you have much ammo for it? (and is the ammo for that still only 1x inv slot per mag?!? (coz it should be at LEAST 2, more like 3...))
Also a nice find in the new uniform too, I found a Ghillie suit the other night, but let the guy I was foraging with collect it as I took the AK-74 earlier in the night.
I'm quite sure that if I didn't want to be found by players, with the Ghillie suit I could very well remain that way for some time!
ugh. really not a fan of the way it's just turned into deathmatch in the towns. as it stands there is absolutely no penalty for killing people, should go back to bandit skins at least. no incentive to not just kill everything.
Try being more covert. I rarely get shot at in towns, usually because I'm concious of my surroundings and know where most people are and can avoid them.
Worst case, I'll shoot one if their intentions are uncertain and they're heading for me while I'm stuck inside a building, though usually I'll give them a chance over voice comm with "Don't move or I'll fucking castrate you" before pulling the trigger.
While I agree there needs to be some kind of balance to shooting people, it needs to be done right. I'd rather put up with real lawlessness for a while if it means having a well thought out way of doing it (aka, doesn't turn you into a bandit for self defense lol).
Basically, my tip is to take things slower when moving into a town, get binocs and scout. Walk slowly, try get on buildings every now and then to see what's going on and scan for snipers.
Also, if you hear footsteps at all, stop drop and roll (it's silent) into a safe spot and listen to them to try and see who's going where.
Well i bit the bullet and decided to use steam limiter and see if it would download just from the australian content servers, seems to be working a treat at the moment albeit the speed is ridiculous slow =\ like 200kb/s. Probably my girlfriends dad putting QoS on and limiting the speed to 200kb/s for everyone in the family which is stupid but eh =\. Anyway does anyone know whether the OA expansion pack is hosted on australian steam content servers?
The main overaching view the DayZ developers have adopted for DayZ is
The game will not judge
ie, it wont punish people for killing other players for no reason. There will be consequences, but not a judge of good/bad behaviour and so forth.
The only reason why people are killing others and in larger then usual numbers is because at the moment there is very little to do once you have 'won' survival and geared up a bit.
For instance I'm at the point now where I have walked to a stack of different vehicle locations and not found 1 vehicle to repair. So I'm pretty close to just walking to Cherno and just popping random people and see how long I can live doing that. I'll try a little longer to find vehicles first though but they seemed bugged or something as I have not seen 1 once, not even someone else using one.
The DayZ developers have already stated that they intend to increase the reasons why you would group together.
Also the last 2 session I played had a lot of people calling friendly and co-oping as evident by their sidebar chat. So it isn't as bad as people think. Just get off the bean coast.
Haha, my ~week old character finally died.
Had traversed half the map a couple of times.
Was with a mate, looting Zerno at eastern barns. Turn around and thought I saw a guy exiting from a door to the barn when I was sure my mate was right behind me. Sprinted for cover and bumped into my mate who was indeed right next to me.
This random fellow legged it (i flicked mouse left and back and he was gone), meanwhile we were searching o see if someone was around as I thought perhaps it was just lag teleport.
See a smoke bomb had gone off so I knew we had company, I quickly turned and sprinted for better cover, just as I passed the corner I ran past my friend as he rounded the corner and he copped four rounds and dropped.
A lot of Z's got angry at the fellow who just fired off a few rounds and he went prone behind a building. I ran up the hillside into the trees as I was carrying 1911 and had *just* swapped my main (AK that was low on mmo) for CZ550.
Got the angle and popped him with one shot in the head.
There was tears asking why he died with so much blood remaining on side chat.
I went down to quickly loot friends corpse but got shot in the back of the head by someone else. By that time there was shots going off everywhere and an all out war had begun haha.
What they need to do is just introduce a risk/reward system for PKing. The reward really is their gear + maybe they should drop ears or something Diablo style :)
With risk being more than just that you are identified that you are a bandit. Perhaps if you die whilst your humanity is low you spawn with only a single clip of makarov or something I don't know :)
Either way, the pvp I died from doesn't bother me, after spawning a couple of times trying to get closer to a mate. the SW airfield was camped by two guys proned at the top of the tower with AKs trying to kill anyone coming up the stairs. That annoyed me a little. Z's that they attracted killed me on the stairs though as they kept bugging out.
1.7.0 also seems incredibly bad for de-sync issues.
With risk being more than just that you are identified that you are a bandit. Perhaps if you die whilst your humanity is low you spawn with only a single clip of makarov or something I don't know :)
I suggested similar, which is when I understood about the spirit of the game. The game does not judge.
If you spawn the player killer with less items, the game judged that player has needing to be punished. So it shouldn't happen. Better is to introduce mechanics that give the player a better choice then killing someone, give them a reason to group up/trade/whatever with them.
Goddamn, mate and I kitted to the hilt again both with alice packs. I had 11!!! clips of AKM ammo.
The AU srevers are just totally rooted with massive desync issues.
We got into some trouble just as lag hit. 11 clips of AKM later, not a single Z dropped.
They were then invulnerable when the server caught back up.
[edit] May not just be AU despite what someone esaid.:
Seems it may just be 1.7 that is broken to hell in general.
Of course i would not have brought it up if it were a male survivor, it was a tasteless joke. As for someone server hoping to for gear with out taking the minimal care to move off to a near bush/hiding place then they deserve to die. As I said I have myself seen on of these types pop into a barracks on me and i shot them right away, but they were a bandit.

I would say over 90% of the times that I have tried to trust someone in DayZ, I've been killed/wounded. I don't bother anymore.
I'd also love to find a vehicle but they are all taken, they do not respawn and since the servers are persistent once they have been up for a while the vehicles are all claim/destoyed and that's that. You have to take them from other players at that point or spend ages searching the wilderness for hidden vehicles. I don't see how this system can continue unchanged, right now I consider DayZ to have no vehicles.
Also I only have 100 rounds for the M240, that's one box mag and it takes 2 inventory slots, as does the 200 rnd box mag for the M249. The Mk 48 mg uses the M240 ammo. One other thing is that if any player sees me with an MG (or any other very rare item) they will kill me for it, so I am now at a point where I must kill all who see me. But this situation I'm ok with as obviously you do what you have to to survive, an MG is very powerful.
True toll.

I suspect our servers are a bit shit because they are constantly communicating with the master database in god-knows where? There may even be packetloss issues that are amplified to the players of the server. So for every bit of lag on the server, each player gets it + their own normal lag. Then there is the wierd peer-to-peer zombie AI and possibly loot and stuff.
It may actually be a more solid experience playing on servers that are close to the master database, even though we may have a 300 ping to it.
Needs to have some consequences introduced for player killing, but not so much that no one will kill and they need to be believable.
I don't understand, what consequence? What consequence is there when society breaks down? None. I have killed 1 bandits and murdered 1 player who I thought was a crawling zombie. I've been killed many times by players. It's good fun. The towns are mad fun. The more fighting over them the better I say. I think some people need to play barbie horse riding instead of day Z. The whining in Day Z is getting worse than the carebears in Eve.
Yeah I'm with you Twisted, anarchy is the only way this game has my interest.
Although I would have to agree spawning in directly behind someone with uber gear sux for them.
A great Idea would be that the people who murder others have a higher chance at getting the zombie sickness and over time turning themselves? Playing as a zombie would be great for the player killers :D
When I'm playing with my mate it's shoot on sight, shoot to kill.
We made it all the way up to NW airfield looted it twice over. Hunted down gunshots, killed a group and missed the one guy who was prone shotting bricks in a corner. Got killed by him ahaha :)
I was at about 8 or 9 murders and a few bandit kills.
The thing is despite my high 'murder' count, most of those people had shot at us first. One for example was in Zerno, we had just dealt with a few Z's, one was checking map and we were crouched around when suddenly a shot rings out between us. I had just moved as a sniper round whizzed by and hit the concrete slab of a house we were next to.
Two more shots ring out at us and we start running for cover, soon the entire town of zombies is raining down on this guy.
Voicecomms between us goes hectic, we find ourselves sprinting after the huge zombie horde, using them as a tracking tool and seeking revenge.
Suddenly, the zombie horde turns on us and we find ourselves turning around and sprinting the other way. Around 50 zombies was the final count that we killed 1/3 of them in a sprint/turn/shoot fashion, dividing the horde up between u in a field before finding a building on the edge of town to dive into and create a bottleneck (plus a few of what I call poltergeist zombies - you know the ones, they sprint through the building and out the other end in the space of 3 frame renders a blur that hits you on the way through!).
We deal with the horde and go to check out where we thought the guy had died from the Z's... No corpse so we decide to check the supermarket for loot spawn.
A few Z's anger and start coming into the supermarket I watch the front door as my mate covers the rear entrances. A few makarov shots ring out so I allow the Z's to get closer before taking my shots.
I hadn't realised however the guy next to me was no longer my mate, it was actually someone who had logged in. I look at him and he starts shooting the zombies, with a makarov. It dawns on me that neither my mate nor I have a makarov and as this guy turns and looks at me I point the barrel of the winchester at his head it clicked that he had a CZ550 on his back and I pulled the trigger before he had a chance to finish what he started.
Bastard had ran to the supermarket and logged off from the horde.
Naturally he cries about being killed on side chat but does nothing more than laugh when he's called out on being the guy who took a few shots at us.
Got a murder for that one, but hey I have no doubt in my mind the guy would have blown me away if I hadn't shot him first, afterall he already tried once :)
It's experiences like that which even Battlefield/COD etc. etc. have never replicated. Threats from people and huge hordes of zombies are real (zombies more so due to bugs unfortunately).
On the weekend I was playing much better thanks to the map. Found a CZ550, so replaced my winchester with it. Walked (what I thought was) a long way from the farm house and thought I better give it a go.
Lined it up on a zombie and took a shot.
Damn that gun's loud. I was swamped from all sides. Burnt through all the CZ ammo, on the way back to the farmhouse ran through my handgun ammo. Made it back in to the barn, up the stairs, got the winchester back, zombies just kept coming and I was out of winchester ammo.
Sure, i sprayed a lot in panic, but man there was a lot of zombies
Next day on new life spawn, found a CZ550 almost straight away. With all the talk of shoot on sight I climbed the hills behind electro and thought I'd get my first murder. After what seemed like forever saw a man crawling past a zombie. Lined up on him, bang. Took him out. I felt bad. Jumped up and ran away over the hill.
I felt really bad.
I wondered who it was.
Murder=0, Headshot=1, ZombieKills=1
WTF? That wasn't a person that was a crawling zombie! Now I was mad. Mad at feeling bad about kililng a zombie and relieved that I hadn't killed another player.
Since I wasn't swamped by zombies I felt a little safer on the hill. Found another camping spot and setup shop. There was quiet a few gunshots going on around the place, but nothing too close. Scanning buildings and roads I saw some ex-survivors laying around. Then on top of the school house I saw another ex-surviror with a current survivor searching his body. He'd either murdered him on the roof or happened on his body. Likely story. I knew what he was and this kill was justified.
Lined up on him. Bang. He's dead now.
Didn't feel bad.
Murder=1, Headshot=2, ZombieKills=1
Switching back around on the hill for a bit.
Saw another guy inspecting the bodies on the school but out the other side. Bang. Bang. Bang. Maybe some lag. Maybe not. Certainly some misses. He hit the ground and crawled back inside. I took a few more shots then moved on.
Plenty of chatter on sidechannel about the shooting. He stayed holed up in the building for a long time. Suspected I was on some other roof. Called in some friendly's to help him out. I didn't volunteer.
That was awesome.
The excitement and the tension. It's not like some crappy blockbuster game where you feel like you are on rails forced from room to room and they make it too dark and monsters jump out behind you.
i had a similar incident yesterday. this is with my current and best character i've had.
So i'm sitting in a bush about 200-300 meters away from an airfield, watching the control tower i spot a guy on top scanning the horizons. i was tempted to annihilate him and steal his goods, i could have hit him pretty easily(My favorite gun is the lee enfield, aka "General Lee", largely because its powerful, accurate and ammo is everywhere), but too many zombies would have been alerted to the shot, so i attempt to contact him. typical side chat "who is the person on the airport tower at south airport", "i can see you, tell me who you are, this doesn't need to end in death"... etc, he doesn't reply at all. i was sort of hoping i could convince him to drop some beans or something and leave.
So i'm sitting there for a while, still trying to get his attention, thinking how i'm going to resolve this. When a flair at the other side of the airport grabs his attention and he moves out of view, i figure its time to at least move closer while he isn't scanning the horizons. While i'm moving i hear a single gunshots, "oh shit", i hit the ground, i'm about 50 meters from the ladder to the airport now, staying still, another 5 min pass and I see someone crawl around to the ladder and start to climb up, i don't know if its the same person or not, i'm thinking "now is a good time to shoot, if that's how this is going to end" but its too late, hes out of view by the time my weapons switches to the makarov. but then, he comes back down the ladder and crawls to the nearby bushes and starts camping the ladder, at which point i realize that this person is either, 1) waiting for me to climb the ladder after overhearing the conversation and taken out the original dude, 2) is the original dude and is waiting to kill the other motherfucker who lit the flair.
so i shoot, and i experienced an almost overpowering sensation of "that was a bad idea", because i missed, he jumps up and i just panic, i hit him at least 6 or 7 times in the chest until he hits the ground again, and then i keep shooting until i hear clicking of no ammo.
Guy says "arsehole" on the side chat, i feel a little bad cause he had pretty good equipment too, but i climb the ladder and see the original guy shot dead at the top of the tower, so that didn't last long, chances are he would have killed me without warning too.
my first murder for that character was bad though, hunting down someone who got my attention and was in the wrong place at the wrong time, 2 hits with general lee and he wasn't fighting back, only had starting gear, and was surrounded by zombies and wouldn't have been able to hit me at the 150 range anyway. Thats also when i learnt that general lee is loud and attracts a lot of zombies even at range.
The thing is despite my high 'murder' count, most of those people had shot at us first.
That's the part that has changed, for the worse. When this mod started out it was a really high tension moment when you came across another player as you didn't know if they were friendly or not, would be a bit of chat and cat n' mouse going on to figure it out.
Now that is gone, you know right away that they are hostile. Well that's been my experience with the last 15 or so players I have come across. If I know they other player has not seen me and is not coming towards me then I let them go, otherwise I open up on them right away now. I've tried the 'be the change you want to see in the world' approach but I got sick of dieing over and over.
i don't understand this though, just because you get the first shot off doesn't always mean you will win, especially if they've seen you. there is huge risk in shooting first if they know you are there, and I've made several bandits regret their decision to shoot first.
It makes it more intense, especially when both players hesitate. killing the other player may simplify the problem, but only if you can kill them off.
I've been in situations where I've stumbled across someone by accident, they did the same to me, we're equally matched and way to close to each other to come out wound free, the only incentive he has to not shoot is the risk i'll return fire and get a better shot in. obviously no one shoots and it becomes real intense.
however, if you get the 1 up on someone, have a clean kill or they have no way of returning fire, then its hard not to take the shot. What if you lose the guy, stumble on him or startle him and he shoots you? all your stuff is gone when you had an opportunity to simplify the matter before hand in relative safety, plus you can then take his beans...
I agree it is much more tense if no one shoots right away, but I think shooting first is best, I've played a lot of Arma and am pretty confident I can hit first shot. I'd rather not roll the dice on whether they can or not.
I had a situation the other day where I had only been alive for about 20mins (this was when I was trying to not shoot on sight) I stumbled upon a guy with an AK in Rog castle, we were about 1m apart and I just ran back outside and headed for the tree line, got shot in the back and was bleeding bad. I knew at this point if i try to bandage I'm dead and I can't fight at range with a makarov so I just turned around and opened up on him but Makarov Vs Ak is a losing fight.
Long story short I've tried to give people the chance to not be a prick and I've been killed for it almost every time. I hear others have much more luck though.
Trust NO ONE. Like you Trauma I was too trusting and have copped far too many deaths from it than I wanted. Toll and I were murdered by one guy, but if he hadn't killed us it was a high chance he was going to die. If you have a clear shot and they have no idea you're there always shoot them.
Yer that was great. We where raiding NW Airfield and taking it nice and slow, watching everywhere. Everything going according to plan. We heard AK shots and new someone was in the area. Then we aggroed a couple of zombies, d^ got gouged by a Z and was bleeding, however we had very recently ran out of bandages. I was spewing because I usually carry around 5, but this trip I only had 2.
So we had to start exploring recklessly, capping any zombie we saw in the hopes a bandage dropped and loot any buildings. Unfortunatly this allowed the BadGuy to zero in on us and popped us both. d^ was dead if we didn't find a bandage in any event, I possibly could have lived. However what is the point in living if you don't risk it for fun! :D
I have an m4 with heaps of ammo, an m1911 with heaps of ammo, all the shit required to hunt and kill animals and cook them and the largest backpack you can get. I am on a desperate mission to find an m4 SD and a GPS and then I can safely retire from the game (actually I am just too scared of dying and losing my precious items).
That's shit if it is the case, hope they change that. Can't bring myself to play at the moment until my FPS lag issue is fixed and 1.7 works. Knowing vehicles will be there would be grand too.
All he had to do was put auto-hover on, flying choppers in Arma is actually a pretty simple affair.

I've said it multiple times now, you won't find vehicles on old servers as other players have beaten you to them. Add in noobs like those above who destroy them and you just don't see vehicles, they need to spawn new vehicles to maintain numbers and not allow saving of vehicles/tents off map. Until then forget vehicles or search the wilderness... or hope to get lucky by finding someones in use.
They had a segment on Dayz on GoodGame tonight. They made it look like a lot of fun, but the review was done on a much earlier version, and they complained about the difficulty in connecting to servers, which I would think that game reviewers logging on during the work day wouldn't have any problem with.

Only recently more servers were opened in Australia. Back when I posted this, there were only 2 viable servers and both were full 24/7, even on weekdays.
If they were referring to making a character / etc, that was just an issue from the mod being way too popular and has mostly been fixed now.
It was probably a legitimate complaint at the time though.
I'm in the middle of my best life so far.. up to Day 12.. got a camo SVD.. M4A3 CCO SD.. lots of clips for both.. NVG.. GPS..
Going pretty well. I've been trying to hunt down some extra NVGs to share with ausgamers folks, I took a snipe shot on a guy with NVG and made him bleed but he got away..
Once i get some i'll post here and one of you guys can have'em.
GPS is the bomb.. makes navigation a piece of piss. The minimap is awesome.
So a friend and myself are trying to play, got everything downloaded, mod installed and found a server. Went to join, put as a survivor and then hit join. After that, it pops up very briefly with a screen, then goes to loading. It's been loading for about 30 minutes now :S
Edit - Seems I was trying to connect to 1.6 servers instead of 1.7, my bad!
Very fun mod, but need way more servers, that and a few of the servers are still running 1.6. Had a shotgun with a heap of ammo and a pack full of food and accidentally shot a zombie and about 10 appeared and ravaged me, was a sad day.
Just wondering if anyone else is having any fps lag when connecting to certain servers? I typically only can play on NZ1 and NZ2 because they both dont drop my fps when i first log in. My fps will be like 3 fps when i log into any other server and I don't know whats causing it, so i thought I'd ask if anyone else is having the same problem?
My friend fixed his FPS issues last night when we were playing, not sure what he did but I'll ask him and edit it.
Had a heap of fun last night, surviving on day 2 and equipped with AKM and a magnum handgun. I've turned half bandit, in that if people I see don't respond or look like they aren't going to, a bullet to the head is in order. I'm trying to survive off the lands only, really hard considering I need a fireplace all the time to cook my meat, and I've ran out of matches. Can you light firewood from barrels?
So I grabbed this last night, the engine feels slugish and annoying other then that the game is great.
Nothing like that intense feeling of dying every second.
Found myself a crossbow, but only 2 bolts, got swamped by 6 zombies and it took my blood down quite a bit. walk around a town in prone for an hour with a broken leg till i found morphine.

Just be careful. I had similar kit, just with an M4 and no GPS. A single zombie ended me when he wall hacked and knocked me out with the first hit ;_;
It saddens me so much when I die like that. Just had a hilarious encounter, was in Elektro bunkered down in a supermarket pilfering the supplies when I hear a commotion outside. See this one guy bolt past and then 12 zombies running after him, was hilarious. Though he then decided the supermarket was a great place to hide out, however he left the door open and the zombies swamped him, which I then proceeded to open fire on with my AKM, killing him and the zombies.
I now have a 12 gauge shotgun, Alice pack with a crossbow for sniping, 10 bolts, heap of food/water/soda, some blood packs, morphine and painkillers. I duck into Elektro when I'm low on ammo and sneak around into the warehouse near the hospital, as it seems to have about 10 or so rooms open and a high amount of ammo.
Cant wait to grab the arma 2 pack when its on sale. Hopefully the steam summer sale. My friends list is pretty much filled with people playing DOTA 2 or ARMA 2 and i really liked what i saw in that good game review.
Ive previously tried the ARMA 2 base game and have no intention of playing them. So its $30 for a mod thats in alpha stage. It looks good but i cant justify spending $30 at this stage as im happy with my DOTA 2. Call me cheap or whatever but last time i spent $30 on a game i didnt try first was BF3 and that was a mistake.
I got my first two kills today (and it's my first time playing). Accidently show my friend in the face trying to help him, he died. Then a guy who popped up in the supermarket I shot my friend near. He attracted many zombies, then tried to leg it so my DMR took care of him. He had a nice Alice backpack and some other nice goodies.
I love the atmosphere and intensity of it. We were leaving an airfield just before, and heard a sniper shot land near us (someone must have been shooting us) and so we had to leg it. Circled around and where on a hill looking down, and spotted two guys in a field, then they started legging it. Tried to chase them but they might've logged.
Met a guy in a supermarket too, he shot me (non-fatal) then logged straight away. Kinda sucked because we could've killed him.
Oh well, I'm enjoying this. Super intense. Needs more servers though.
We need to get organised and play together. I am sick of lone wolfing it. If we get a good enough group together we can hold the NW airfield and farm it till we all have good weapons and NVG. Then we can murder pubbies in Elektro/Cherno. Also I want to get a helicopter.

You're welcome to join my friend and I. Hit me up on steam if you want. carsonpants is my steamid.
Sent an invite. Where do you usually frequent? I need to do a bit of a deer stand + NW Airfield mission to get re-geared. Maybe I will be lucky and spawn with all my items :P
Heh me and two of my friends were up until 3 this morning -_- We found a bus near Polana and decided to drive into Solnihcniy, was hilariously fun. I died last night by someone accidentally shooting me, I was using direct communication with voice and he must not have heard me :( Luckily though he guarded my body till I got back, nice bloke.
Where is the cheapest place to get either Arma 2 bundle or just OA?
IIRC you need the bundle and it seemed steam for $30 was about the best deal. I checked a few key sites the only ones in stock were $35+. I think there was a post first page that listed some foreign online sellers that were a little cheaper but were for physical disc, not a steam digital copy.
Man, was an epic day today. Lost our shit though. There needs to be a cd before you can log in combat. Or if you alt+f4, your body hangs around for like 10-30seconds or something.
Found a couple of cars in a forest today, stole them. Ditched one and hid the other. I lost my DMR and I'm ever so sad because of it. D:
I died this morning :( Was surviving for two days straight on about 3000 blood while trying to limp around finding matches to cook my meat. Was in Kamenka scrounging around and some dude shot me without any warning, took my alice pack and all. Ah well, such is life in the wastelands.
So is the NW airfields the best place to get gear quickly and easily? Might go up there tonight with 4 mates and gear up then go hunting for revenge.
Humbug. I found that the Elektro factory on the northern outskirts works well with gearing, and not many people go there. Really I just want my Enfield back, was glorious. Though the Winchester seems to work just as well, and seems to be silent-ish.
Anyone using Build 93616? (latest).
I'm using that + 1.7
Thought I'd give it a go, tried to play last night, only seemed to be able to connect to ANZ4 and even then it was a very long process to spawn at 'receiving for data'.
1.6. still seems to be the utmost stable and quickest to join I've found, considering rolling back (again).
I haven't played this much since the FPS issues hit me and all the problems with 1.7 and beta patches. I'm just going to leave it until the next update.
The Enfield and Winny are giant pieces of shit. Military grade weapons spawn in the NW and if you want to get some proper killing done that's what you need.
I've now figured out a safer way to gather guns/ammo. Logged onto a practically empty server and went to the airstrip in Balota, grabbed myself an AK47 with 6 clips of ammo and a assortment of gear. Does anyone know where to find the Alice pack? Kind of miss my old one, was really handy having 20 slots.

Civvy buldings. Best place to find them.
I miss my DMR, I've found a fucking load of ammo for it, but no gun D:
Eorl, that is a lame way to aquire your equipment. :(
Alice packs can be found in the 5 apartment buildings that are right next to the Cherno Hopspital. Those apartnment buildings can give hatchets, matches, compass, binoculars, alice packs and all manner of other simple goodies that you need. It is a bad run when you don't find at least 2 of those important items.
In ANZ 4 at the moment, name is Eorl. Pretty sure I saw Carson too. Yeah I know its a lame way but it was just easiest to grab so I had something at least. Died again tonight, was on top of hospital in Berizino and somewhat shot me I think. Mate was lucky enough to survive, and later saw the culprits being swamped by zombies. Now I'm running from Cherno, so much fun.
Got shot on ANZ4 at the NWAF. Survived 3 days got an AKM with 4 clips, then sniped from the tower (I think). Was a bit sus, mate got dropped inside a building with no real LOS on any shooting position.
Ah so that was you typing that you got shot? Got some stuff pack, packing a Enfield now instead of AK but gonna go sniper on top of Elektro/Cherno for the hell of it.

I was on ANZ4 last night. Around 11pm (our time) we where at the NWAF and got sniped. There was 4 of us, sucks. It seems like you need to go there, but everytime I do, I die. I kinda wanna explore more. We turned Stary in to a hot spot though. Which was fun.
I think I'm getting a rep as a bandit, but every time I tried to be friendly I was shot, so now it's kill or be killed mentality from me.
Yeah I heard the side chatter when you were firing up the place, was hilarious. I'm now hunting in the dark, scaring the crap out of people by throwing flares and causing commotion.

You on ANZ4? I'm about to get on with a chum. Welcome to join us.
I was the guy who tried to shoot Freekill. I completely fucked it up because I was using the m24, never used it before. Then he had an old man skin and I thought it was my friend, so I hesitated. Then he killed us D:
Then we went back and killed some other guys. Very fun.
ANZ4 wasn't showing up before in my lunch break, but I quickly jumped on and was trying to survive the harsh night while stuck in a school building in Berizino.
Had a good old mexican standoff earlier. My friend and I, saw this guy at a deer stand, so we capped him. Then there where two others, they saw us and was like 20mins of us just watching each other. My friend capped one of them, but the other got away. Tracked him to Dubrovka, but then lost him.
I'm trying to stick away from major hubs, and just trying to survive the elements and other players.
Was at an inland town today and raided the shop. After I left heard shooting at the shop. Asked if he needed help, didn't say anything
Then a guy called out for friendlies, saying he was coming from the Forrest to the south. I warned about the guy at the shop, and e finally got on side chat. About five minutes later all hell broke lose, and the four of us met up on the road with zombies sprinting everywhere. It was pure chaos.
After that we spent the next two hours moving north, catching and cooking cows, hitting shops and barns. It was awesome fun, such great team work.
I'm now just outside of NW Airfield, when we stopped playing. But hesitant to go in by myself for the first time, so if anyone want to team up tomorrow, I'll be on around 10am.
I died at the NW airport, but not by a player. I had awakened the terrible wrath of military zombies, and as such fended them off but received broken legs in the process. I had just recently changed from the starting backpack to a Assault backpack, but mistakenly just swapped the backpacks, instead of taking everything I had out of my former one. This led to a bug where the previous backpack just disappeared, so was out of luck.
Here I was crawling my way out of the barracks to the watch tower closest to the SE barracks, when I realise I can't climb up stairs when I'm restricted to prone. I had to slowly make my way to the other watch tower close by that had a ladder outside, which I was able to climb up, however no morphine was to be seen. Thinking I could go down the staircase to check underneath where there usually houses some loot, I find I can't go back up, and am therefore stuck.
My friend was over at the NE airport so he was no help for at least a good 20 minutes and I wasn't too keen on being a sitting duck, so figured I could just go out the front door and crawl my way to safety. Little did I realise that the door was blocked by a giant mound of concrete, what a sad day for me. I thought "hmm, wonder if I could somehow glitch my way through with prone/rolling". Not a good idea at all. I evidently killed myself by rolling UNDERNEATH the damn concrete, making me a very sad panda.
NWAF is just a cluster fuck. I never, never have had any luck there. Every time I go there, I end up dead. So I'm just avoiding it like the plague.
I'm just trying to survive the elements at the moment. Setting myself little challenges. I want to get my character to survive for as long as possible. Currently sitting on just over a day or so. Some of the servers no longer have side chat (which is good) but it makes it hard as shit to know who might or might not be friendly and which areas are hot.
The atmosphere in this game is fucking awesome. It's been forever since I've played a game that's got the adrenaline pumping.
When you are at NWAF do you go prone everywhere you go? I have made shitloads of expeditions there and have only died twice. Once when it was my first time and I was being careless, and another when I shot a dude, excitedly looted his corpse and got shot by his buddy. Next time I will make sure the area is clear before I loot corpses ><
Friend stumbled upon a clan of tents at the NE airport, was excitedly telling me on Teamspeak how much loot was in them, but proceeded to quickly log out as they were well equipped for night time raiding.
I've re-geared myself from last nights episode and now plan to survive the environment like you Carson, by only eating and drinking from the land, will be quite interesting. I was reading the forums and someone had found a M24 with a thermal scope, would be a great addition with NVG to go hunting in Elektro/Cherno.
There are no thermal scopes in DayZ. Anyone using one is cheating. If you find one don't use it as people even caught using hacked weapons tend to get banned.

Ahhh, bummer then. Will just have to be content with NVG.
So i went in to NWAirfield. Got an M4A1 SD from the bottom right. Headed back out and was working my way around through the trees on the right when someone was crawling along the other direction.
i was about to try communicating with him and he opened fire
i kept firing but died. Another guy died within seconds after me, so I hoped it was him
Spawned near electro. On side chat said any friendlies in eletro meet at the hospital in 15 minutes. There was a lot of interest. Took about 30 minutes to get organised but then 6 of moved through eletro and headed down to the docs.
Just side chatted something like "we are moving to the docs in electro, if you are friendly announce now or you will be shot"
Another guy joined us, but then as we were crawling towards the building someone got nervy with a nearby zombie and then we were swarmed. Headed in to the big building near the docs. At the end there i had 27 kills, another new spawner picked up 30 something. We lost one guy, who spawned back near electro and made his way back to his pack
Server (or me) crashed.
It was a lot of fun. Though i think 6-7 people is too many, need smaller teams of 3 or 4.
So now i'm in a good state. Have a shotgun, blood and food and i'll be heading out again very soon.
I've re-geared myself from last nights episode and now plan to survive the environment like you Carson, by only eating and drinking from the land, will be quite interesting.
Yeah man. We just raid towns every now and then and try to track other players. Generally they all end up hostile (if we don't shoot first, they do), so we are careful.

There apparently are thermal scopes, they're just really really rare. The gun in the vid is the only one I've heard of, it has NV and thermal scope and can only be found on crashed heli's.
That's the one I saw in a screenshot, glad to hear it is in-game. I've finally sorted myself out and re-gearing slowly from NW airfield, however proving difficult with the amount of sniper pot shots I seem to attract...
Day Z Development @dayzdevteam Due to sustained and constant hacking, the central database is being dropped until further notice. You will not be able to connect. -Rocket
Day Z Development @dayzdevteam UPDATE: Server is back online. Those identified as hackers in last weeks have received permabans. Sorry for the downtme -Rocket

What gun you packing? If you ever need a chum to venture with, hit me up.
Pending patch details here if you have not seen them yet. Should be interesting.
I'm both looking forward to this patch, and a bit scared of stronger zombies. The zombies being a little less crazy with being able to go through walls is good, but bigger range and stronger hits is scary.
The hanging around after disconnect is good. Even though I have done it once before. But, I've had so many people disconnect when they are confronted. Very annoying.
Only time I have disconnected to save my gear is when I got swamped by zombies after my pistol fired. The reason it fired was because I was climbing a ladder and hit mouse1 on the selection causing me to climb it and fire my pistol at the same time. I felt justified disconnecting in that situation :P
Packing a M16 at the moment, I've noticed however that you can change to SD magazines which intrigued me as I previously thought only SD guns can use SD magazines. Currently trying to find a NVG as I would like to camp up in Elektro or Cherno and fire off some rounds to scare some people, where's the best place to find some?

Arma has a slightly odd system here, magazines hold the majority of the ballistic info, including how loud it is. So to AI the sound data is from the magazine not the weapon, but for a player you hear the weapon firing. So if you have a un silenced M16 and load an SD magazine the AI will think it's a silenced weapon, but players will hear the shots. Works vice versa too.
Im loving this game atm, the social aspect and emotional connections are outstanding! Arma2 is also a very capable engine, at times I've been blown away with the landscape visual like oil paintings...
Add me on steam: nix386
This game is way better with voice chat and some better trusted people.
Trauma - I fired an M16 loaded with an SD Stanag round and it aggroed a lot of zombies.
My understanding is you can use SD rounds in a standard rifle, they will still make noise when you fire, and you can use standard rounds in an SD weapon but it will still make noise when you fire.
The gold ticket is SD rounds in an SD gun :)
eorl, add me to your steam im Shroud08, i play on ANZ4 as LOLGA.

I've used SD ammo in an unsilenced M4 many times, works every time.

Barracks or Heli crash sites.
I really want NVGs. Let me know when you get them, and I'll make sure you don't have any "accidents" and take them off you should you have an "accident".

I'll make sure to not have any "accidents" nearby you then haha.
I'd add you guys to Steam but I don't actually run it through there anymore, but if you see me in a game give me a yell. I usually run around ANZ 4 or 1, however sometimes I switch to 2 or 9.
Hey fellas,
A little advice please. I've joined a server for the very first time( yay me!!) and it is stuck on the "Loading" screen. Do I have to do something else or just wait?? This whole setup thing is very confusing to an oldtimer and not at all like I remember it as back in the day of allied assault etc.
TIA.
Okay this is how I got DayZ running, in the end it doesn't actually run through Steam, but there is a way to do that which I can link you to.
First, make sure you've ran Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead at least once to go through the installation steps.
Steps:
Download all the DayZ files from here ending in .rar
Extract all the .rar files until you have a 14 files ending in .pbo or .bisign
Create a folder in your steamapps -> common -> Operation Arrowhead directory titled @DayZ
Inside the @DayZ folder create another folder titled Addons
Inside the Addons folder you just created, move the 14 files that you extracted previously into here
Download the Arma II Beta Patch here (I strive to have the most up-to-date beta patch so keep an eye on AusGamers files)
Once you've downloaded, extracted and installed the patch, time to get a bit tricky
Locate the Operation Arrowhead folder again, and you should see a file called _runA2CO_beta
Right click the file and create a shortcut, calling it whatever you would like, I called mine DayZ
Right click the shortcut and choose the "edit" option
Now scroll down to the bottom of the notepad file, and you'll see :run and then a line below ending in %9
Select from :run all the way to %9 and past it over with this code here
And that is it! Just run the shortcut and it will automagically run the game for you and you should see in the main menu on the right hand side "Expansion @DayZ". If you don't, make sure you haven't missed a step.
If you want to run it through Steam, there is a guide over here that can let you know how.
Yeah, groganus, i'm launching from steam as Combined Ops and have this in my Arrowhead properties "-mod=@DayZ -nosplash" without quotes. I also noticed that when i'm presented with server choices my version still shows as ver. 1.6 instead of ver. 1.7. i copied and extracted the 1.7 files into the Addons folder where they belong(replacing the two 1.6 files). But still shows 1.6thanks Eorl, that'd be great!!
Whoops, time lapse in posting! thanks Eorl i'll work through those settings and see what happens.
WOW, thanks Eorl and groganus, got it up and running, it was dark and the flies were abuzzin' so i 've just got to work out the controls a bit more and then YEE HAWWW!
Good to hear GarnGit! I've found this guide over here explains everything in detail, though there are some things that you just need to learn by doing.
Eorl's guide is good. I would strongly recommend doing the in-game Arma 2 tutorial before firing up Dayz. Not the whole tutorial just up to the bit where you grab and bandage the injured man.
I would strongly recommend doing the in-game Arma 2 tutorial before firing up Dayz
Doing this first might actually turn off players as Arma 2 has one of the most gumby controls ever in an FPS and the in-game tutorial is even more useless.
I would instead recommend beginners watch the below videos in order, then read this link:
If you've got Arma2 + OA I would highly recommend fucking around with the mission editor. You can create epically huge battles with just a few mouseclicks. It is so simple to use that even I can use it!
Finally got some nice kit up and running today, found a M4A1 CCO and a ton of stanag, had full survival gear (not NVG / GPS) and a ton of food, so thought I'd go for an expedition to Stary Sobor + NW airfield.
Got to stary, heard gunshots, got DC'd.
Came back on 10 mins later and shot a makanoob who looked at me funny.
Went into the military camp and another makanoob attacked me. Server went down before I could loot him :(
Logged back in, nothing of note in stary, so headed for NW Airfield.
Got there and ZOMG! Crashed heli! So I got down low, scanning every building I could see in 3rd person, scanning bushes etc and *crack*
"You are dead".
Fucking snipers... I think I'll have a rage-vacation until next patch -_-
I went full bandit about 2 days ago, after I died with a full kit.
Held out at one of the high yield buildings in Elektro and shot anyone that came near it. No fuss, no warning, you came near that building you died. Felt good for a while then just got boring.
Had a mate with me, I did the killing, then I'd send him out to loot the body. He was the bean mule.
Approaching other survivors is just damn risky. I know it's a bit cunty, but sometimes it's best just to shoot on site.
I've been finding it hard to really get in the 'mindset' to play again after losing pretty much EVERYTHING anyone could ever want…
Anyway I was slowly gearing up again, I had a few tools, ALICE pack, M1014 with about 60 slugs, M4A1 CCO SD with 3 STANAG SD Clips, M1911 with quite a few clips, plenty of meat.
I'd just found a bicycle in Zelenogorsk, I decided I wanted to set up a camp in a location I'd been scouting so I just needed to find a tent, I moved up north to the next town, Vybor.
Dropped my Bike off and hid it in the bushes, my mission was simple, check the main buildings for a tent, get it back to the bike and head up and make a base.
With a base set up with a bike, I can easily make runs around the north of the map to NW or NE Airfield or hit towns like Berezino or Stary with ease. Build up "new starter" supply kits in my tent and have several compass' maps, knives, matches etc stored in the tents.. So if I die its not so bad.
I found one of those houses that has a few rooms in the downstairs and some steps going up to a closed door or brick wall. BINGO, my tent was there.
Unfortunately, I found a dead zombie aswell, which to me meant someone else was possibly in town. I had my tent, mission accomplished, now to get back to my bike and get the hell out of there..
Slowly crouching through the town I was heading back to the hill I had hidden my bike on.. I was about to pass one of those small buildings where vehicle parts often spawn.. The back door was open.. Just as I was about to pass it some guy comes crawling out of it.. AKM in hand.. He turns and we are literlly standing nose to nose.. I've got my M1014 in his face, he's got the AKM.. Being so close to completing my mission and just wanting to get the hell out of there I open fire, I fire off about 5 shots (not aiming) he does the same..
I see blood splurting out of him but unfortunately I got hit too.. I crumple to the ground and the world goes dark…..
No idea if I killed him or not but point blank shots from the M1014 you'd hope would be an instant death.
Haven't grounged up another life yet.. But I really want to set up this camp.. I'm about to go on a trip to the US so maybe when I get back.
Dudes probably been sitting there for hours using the heli as bait, was there a stack of survivor bodies around it?
Nope. My guess is he was hiding the bodies.
I was being SUPER careful because I was expecting a trap. Spent 3 minutes looking around, would move 40 meters crouch-running, go prone, look around for another 2, run run run *bang*
Never saw the guy who killed me, he was probably 900m away with a M107 or something. Def out of normal un-scoped view distance.
Can't connect at the moment. Upgraded to 93825 and getting kicked (with many others) for Battleye #16, which my googling tells me requires a server side setting change to stop happening, so rolling back to 93701.
this sounds kind of awesome, I didn't think much about it at first becuase zombies have been done to death, then I watched the video. How many of you guys are actually playing this in a group together and trying to survive? I'm nearing my monthly quota so if I decide to pick this up it won't be for a while. What do I need in order to get in on the action anyway? (besides the mod)
So i spawned with just a backpack, painkiller and bandage. no food, no guns nothing else. There's a torch in your backpack.
I crawl to the first house. See 2 survivors crawling up the field. direct chat they don't say anything
I go In to the first house and there's a damn zombie in side. He hits me. There's nothing i can do so I run straight up the field to where the other survivors were. As I run past I direct chat "hey guys have some zombies" the guy is like "oh thanks" and they start sprinting too.
Most of the walkers chase them and i hide in the grass. Head back to the house but there were some crawlers. head off in to the forrest and duck and crawl away they don't follow
But, zombies have MUCH better vision. I tried to crawl past a walker and it didn't work.
walkers have spotted me crawling past them twice now. I"m on my 3rd new life since the patch.
When you are prone you are now 1 bar visible. I've been seen a lot and then die a lot because there's nothing I can do.
So now you start with nothing. You head to your first house to get some cans and some ammo, still no gun, and there's probably a zombie in there waiting for you.
You can't just crawl past crawlers because even if you lay still you are still visibility = 1, so you have to avoid their paths
It's much harder. Zombies are once again VERY scary.
Since the patch i've died 3 times. This last life I had a heap of food and ammo, still no gun, climbed up a 3 story building in electro and fell of the roof. That's it for tonight i'm too annoyed.
Also, here's 3 zombies spawned in the middle of a barn in 1.71.:
The latest patch actually sounds a lot more fun, pushing the survival aspect that has been slightly missing. New zombie visions are good too, it was just so easy walking past them and they didn't even blink.
I'm getting arma 2 now, hopefully should be in on this action soon. I'm way over my monthly quota so it's only a matter of time before my cap sets in and my net will be slower than a carrier pidgeon but come next month hopefully I should have it all set up & installed.
Oh man, new patch is going to be intense. I don't wanna die! I got so much cool shit. I'm glad it's harder now though. The survival aspect is what keeps bringing me back.
I'm stuck on telstra or dialup and I only have internet with them so no chance of bundled discounts. I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for internet. I don't usually download much anyway so it's not usually an issue.
Even inland is difficult. But tbh the zombie aggro is bit much.
Mate and I have been running around kitted out with M16s + 1911s etc.
We've gone through:
About 15-20 clips of 1911 ammo between us.
Crossbow + all it's ammo (got to a point where lost bolts not being able to find them)
Double-Barrel 12-guage and all its ammo (lots of it) - This sucker is as useless as the enfield we found.
Half a clip of STANAG ammo (boatloads of that left between our two m16's) but these guns are mostly reserved for PvP as they are too loud. May as well be an enfield.
Went through two towns, half the time with a sole mag of 1911 ammo. And we only moved through one major city and one sub-major.
The biggest issue we found was zombie aggro from either half a town away randomly and through buildings. Once at the army barracks/tents I magically aggro'd half the town crouched still and looting, through the tent walls and through another building. They ran through the tent incapped me and I nearly bled out, mate was able to bandage me with 1300 blood left (from 12000). Just an instant incap no warning and no recent shots etc.
The 'vision' of Z's is definitely a little buggy.
The games difficulty is coming from bug micro-managing of Z's rather than gameplay difficulty which is a bit annoying.
In fact, it'd just be nice if it was more simple to drop a gun you currently have for one you've found on the ground, quickly, without sacrificing the current held guns ammo to the Magazineammogremlinmuncher bug that frequently occurs (moreso when its a spare in your backpack). Then you could utilise those useless guns that you find on the ground to just clear out a town.
That patch was bloody annoying to install. For anyone interested in doing it manually, I did this:
1. Go here and grab "DayZ-1.7.1.torrent", download contents.
2. Unzip it to steamapps\common\arma 2 operation arrowhead\, so that the @DayZ subfolder is created.
3. Go here and grab ARMA2_OA_Build_93825.zip and run the patch.
4. In the same folder as earlier, find and edit _runA2CO_beta.cmd and add "@DayZ" to the end of the "-mod" line near the end of the file, so that you get this snippet:
The last step was the most irritating. Followed so many guides on the net and none of the launch parameters worked with the beta. Merely modifying the existing batch file worked first go. I still get some warnings in-game but I'll write them off as bugs.
I just have the original executable in the main arma OA directory (call ARMA2OA) or something for patching, after patch installed I rename it to ArmA2OA.originalbackup (or whatever so it wont be used).
Then under expansions/beta, I just copy the beta executable across so when you launch OA it automatically calls the beta patch client.
In steam I have this on the launch properties:
-beta=Expansion\beta;Expansion\beta\Expansion;CA;@DayZ
All you have to do each patch is either delete the executable, rename the .original to what it should be and apply patch (then rename it again and re-copy the beta exe to the main dir).
Of course each dayz patch you just have to copy across the associated files to the dayz directory and done.
Its relatively painless and worked everytime this way for me.
I havn't read the patch notes, but have class today so I'll look up later and try re-jigger the main post to update it a bit.
Double-edged sword getting rid of starting guns. It stops the makanoobs (guys with nothing but starter kit) from deathmatching and hounding a better geared player to death through sheer numbers though, so I'm kinda happy.
Can't count how many times I've had some asshole with nothing but a few makarov clips and some beans charge me from behind and been nothing but a slight nuisance because I had to waste ammo + cooked meat to get back to 100%.
Atleast now they'll have to spend a little time getting the gear to shoot me, which means they'll hopefully be less likely to get into a scrap through fear of losing their kit.

First time post under this name. I have been been around since the Q2 days and remember the old boys like Strex etc. Time has past and wife, kids and mortgage have taken over. Anyway, finally getting back into casual gaming and tried DayZ over the last few weeks. The atmosphere and the emotion is unbelievable. Last night, I made the decision to shoot on site. After being shot in the back far to many times, I had a shoot on sight strategy last night. After shooting dead two other players, I honestly felt bad, but had to do it for survival and a can of beans (but then the Zeds came after me). Anyway, I will lone wolf it for a few days then will try my hand at trusting other players again.......

1.7.1.1 has been the best patch yet.
Framerate issue after server has been running for awhile seems to be gone.
Zombies are a good balance now, they do aggro easy but if you're very careful they're at least avoidable.
Still a bit buggy with sight/running through buildings occasionally.
Just did a run through NW airfield with a mate after I accidently destroyed my m16 and 8 Stanag mags >.< they really need to fix that so things drop to the ground rather than being destroyed when you move a weapon from backpack to main.
Managed to recover another m16 + 8 Stanag mags, Got two coyote backpacks and upgraded from Alice packs, one thanks to a spawn another thanks to three dead guys we stumbled across (didn't run into their murderer thankfully).
Food/Water seems a bit more scarce now too, we've been living off animals we find on the land mostly.
Getting Z aggro if you're not in a decent building can be very dangerous, which makes NW airfield a little safer to a degree, the easier aggro means people can't hear shots and be on your ass in three seconds from the other side of the airfield.
Developer's Note:
* YES: I know this hotfix has content in it. It was content that didn't make it into the last update, and some of the fixes are bundled with this content, so it was easier to release the content than try to remove it.
* Requires ArmA2 Beta.
* NOTE: VERY IMPORTANT: MELEE WEAPONS ARE QUITE UNDER POWERED CURRENTLY. THEY WILL BE ADJUSTED UPWARDS OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. EACH HAVE DIFFERENT DAMAGE VALUES.
Changelog:
* [NEW] Tone Mapping to enhance nightlighting conditions
* [FIXED] Generic Loot not spawning (such as food etc...)
* [FIXED] Animals stand still and HURR DURRR (they now walk around)
* [FIXED] New blood values not being saved when a player eats (they do now)
* [FIXED] Duplicate players not being removed (should now be removed on login)
* [NEW] Melee Weapon introduced: Hatchet (can only drop through right click in gear menu)
* [NEW] Maximum animals increased
* [NEW] Melee Weapon introduced: Crowbar (can only drop through right click in gear menu)
* [NEW] Double Barrelled shotgun sound
* [FIXED] Gender assignment broken (working correctly)
Another update today, 1.7.1.4. Apparently this update fixes the some FPS issues, however there was also a patch earlier this morning/last night that fixed the melee weapons causing issues to the server among other things.
1.7.1.3

Developer's Note:
* A designation of [NEW] doesn't necessarily mean a new feature, 4chan, it means a change in operation not directly related to a bug. Could be for better performance or rebalancing.

* [FIXED] Unlimited Infected spawning (now has a cooldown enabled so it won't spawn too many at once)
* [FIXED] Melee weapon sounds non-existent/terrible (now has placeholder sounds)
yeah it's launching the beta that is the issue.
I get an error launching direct3d 9 thingy. googled it and the fixes offered don't work. or I suck at it. changing the command line doesn't work.
reload!: are you running the steam version of arma2:co? Remember you don't just have to change the command line to run the beta, you also need to copy the arma2oa.exe file from arma2oa/expansion/beta into the main directory for it to work. Make sure you backup the original exe file before doing this.
hey QGLers, i'm downloading both arma2 and OA from steam atm, getting ready to install this shit!
would you guys recommend getting the DayZ auto updater tool thing? also, would it be best to start off with the actual Arma tutorial before moving onto dayz?
my profile name is =B'oh= Bubblegum Tate if anyone wants to play later on tonight or something :D

Here is a tutorial vid on how to install DayZ via steam. And yes, if you're new to Arma then do the basics to get a feel for things. Also don't forget that with the recent versions you need the Arma beta patch.
anyone have direct link to patches/torrent page?
trying to go through main page keeps yielding page not found when getting to the first downloads page.
But then I installed SixUpdater which is a confusing POS but I can muddle through the updates now...
Yeah I found it confusing until I stumbled upon these instructions:
"Now in the Six updater, set your PROFILE (at the top) to be A2 OA Combined Ops (forced)."
Now closing the Updater and using solely the server browser in the Launcher program can put me into the game without anything configured under Options. Bit unintuitive, but works.
I'm actually on now if anyone wants to play?
No one starts off with guns anymore? i didnt have one and was totally disappoint.
my computer feels a bit laggy when i play, i hope thats more of a net issue than a pc issue. :(
Also, set video memory to default, it will allow more video memory usage than very high.
Also, just got shot in the face by a mate at the NWAF. We were running into the tower and I was last one in dragging a train of zombies with me. I came up the stairs then fell over dead.
Apparently I appeared in front of him as he shot due to lag. No time to mourn my death, he looted me and kept on going. :(
Now to run back to that damn AF and get my shit back.
shit, guys, probs had the best first time playing ever, haha.
started off along the coast somewhere, i suspect near chernarus. decided that after nearly being killed by a lone zombie, i'd head into the hills, however, i headed up wandering alone out there for ages, not being able to find civilisation and i was slowly dying of thirst.
then along comes this guy on a motorbike, offers me a lift anywhere AND gives me food and drinks. I told him i was new so he drove me up to NW airfield or something. We ended up having to hold out at one of the towers cos of mass zombies.
During the middle of it all, he says that he has to go, so he leaves me his main weap (an L85A2) with 3 clips along with his motorbike. He left and so i got off the tower ASAP, got on the bike and sped away.
Hoping now that all my gear and the bike is saved when I log back in!
Also, thanks for the help with the lag issue, guys!

I've got a kick ass computer and even then arma II (haven't been in dayz yet) feels like I'm in jello. I've always just figured that's how the physics of the game are. I've tried it on a couple of computers, same kind of feeling like a marionette puppet.
Had an awesome moment last night. two guys parked on a high up hill, in the distance from Power station. had my brother act as a decoy and they were trying to shoot him and failing.. snuck up the hill around the back via the forest and popped them both in the back. took big ass guns but then the entire area was alerted to our presence and people were pouring in from everywhere, both of us died :(

this is what I had failed to do. thanks, now I can go back to shitting myself at the slightest sound of movement.
I don't get the massive amounts of player killing going on. I was 5mins into a fresh char, had literally nothing except pain killers and a dude is like you can not pass unless you give me the pain killers. So I ate them so the prick couldn't get them. He killed me.
To me there is something wrong with end game, cause people with all the shit are getting bored or something?
Player killing is so much more interesting than teaming up IMO.. see a guy in the distance and its auto stalk mode and finding a way to take them out without being seen. I dont do the befriend then shoot in the back low shit.
theres not enough to do in the game to team up IMO, except hunt other players
To me there is something wrong with end game, cause people with all the shit are getting bored or something?
I haven't put many hours into the game but I'm already starting to get bored and questioning whether to continue playing. Game looks pretty and the open nature of the environment/world is fantastic and immersive, but in terms of the point .. move into a new area to get your hands on new weapons/items/food so that you can go to another area for more weapons/items/food?
I think I was more attracted to the potential the mod had, rather than the current state of the mod. I just sit there in the game thinking "wish they'd fix this bug that's ruining the experience" or "I wish it were more like XYZ" - to the point where reinstalling Dead Island or L4D2 becomes more appealing than what I'm doing at the time (e.g. crawling in the grass).
Maybe I'll revisit the mod when it's more mature/complete - but at this point is seems a bit of a grind-fest like Diablo 3 ...
Generally I always play with a mate we get on together and we team work our way around with an objective... even if sometimes its just a case of "shit i need food"
If anyone is near the NW airfield let me know I really need some morphine. I gave my last one away to some poor dude with a broken leg. Hit me up on steam fpotyay
Mate and I are in the process of trying to find and fix up vehicles. As someone else said, its what you make of it I guess. Right now for us it's survive for as long as possible whilst trying to find and fix a vehicle.
Then we'll play hit and runs on towns until we most likely get killed :)
Yep you really have to make your own fun, it is good though no question. They need to add say build-able camps or something, like you can build a fort to hold people off or underground bunkers or something.
Yo fpot, best bet is to stay logged in and wait. Someone will run past eventually and chances are they'll have morphine on them lol.
And D, I think that's a goal in the future, but for now you have tents / sandbags / tanktraps / barbed wire and you can build a pretty mean perimeter with all that around your tents. It'll take a while to get up and running and you risk people finding it, but it's possible.
sigh. now im getting endless battleye client not responding. not a problem with the router as it has previously worked fine on the same one. tried reinstalling it multiple times to no effect.
I'm going through some of the training missions while waiting to get uncapped to familiarize myself with how the game works. Do you actually get to fly the choppers in the zombie mod? Because I can't fly them for shit. A distinct lack of separate yaw controls is shithouse. How the fuck do you just sit in one spot & spin around? Google tells me it's not possible, does google know all?
yeah experienced something pretty strange, had some mates on and we spent ages meeting up, and we all pretty well covered from open view. all three of us died to a single shot each ,never heard gun fire, just insta death. Bit suss.
guys, i went to the military camps next to the cherno hospital and stocked up on morphine and blood bags, so let me know if any of you are in trouble with broken legs etc, i'll try to help
I agree with the QGL team up idea, I've been running around mostly alone, but sometimes with some mates.
Do we have a teamspeak or something that QGL'ers can use?

I have a 10man vent people are welcome to use. Just hit me up on steam. carsonpants
carson: nope. I was doing the server hoping while in a barracks thing and I had an encounter with someone. We both killed eachother hehehe
That happened to me last night. Except I didn't get to kill him. I had fucking everything.
Coyote backpack, M48 LMG, sniper rifle, the FAL with NV scope, rangefinder. Most sad about the Backpack actually. Shit happens I suppose.
Have shot a couple of bandits in the last few days that have disconnected to avoid death.
Pretty low act. One guy had us pinned down at a chopper crash. Killed one of our party at the chopper, then my friend and I legged it to the tree line, mate died just as he got into the trees.
I survived and started hunting this sniper. Found him, shot him with the CZ550 in the chest, was about a 350m shot. He dropped, so I scampered around to finish him off with the pistol but he had DC'd. No surprise he was at the top of the leaderboard with 350 kills.
We all know it sux dying, but if you're going to be a hostile bandit, you should be prepared to die when things dont play out the way you'd hoped.
Then another Bandit outside a shopping centre, shot us as we were running out. He nearly killed one of us, but we got him, he DC'd too. Then when we were healing up. He appeared behind us and shot one of our guys.
Obviously he server hopped to heal up and move to a better position then reconnected on ours behind us.
The problem with DayZ servers is that the development team insist on having direct access to the machine to push updates and other control measures. Not only that but the system requirements are steep.
So it isn't going to happen with Ausgamers or GameArena servers at the moment, from what I understand anyway.
I got shot in the face the other day by a bandit at Cherno supermarket, lol, but anyway.
Guys, Carson was kind and generous enough to allow QGL'ers to use his vent server.
If anyone wants to play, pm me and i'll send you the deets (I have carsons permission).
added, 59.
Also, is anyone able to assist me near NW airfield? I'm currently sitting between the south-east barracks and the barn just south of there. I've got plenty of gear, i'm just on 2.5 k blood, so travelling is a bit of an issue right now, I could really use a blood bag.
Debug Forrest as people have taken to calling it is an area where a sort of proxy model for all players just stands about (I don't know the technical reason for it), they don't do anything. But they act like a voodoo doll, shot it and you will kill the associated player.
It's always been that way but was never an issue until dayz really. Obviously very open to exploits.
Debug forest is basically the error handling side of things. If your client is out-dated or sometimes the server glitches, it will place you into this debug area, which you luckily can get out of by heading SE. If you are unlucky to be placed in the debug wasteland, you are quite likely out of luck. The wasteland is miles of empty zone, though apparently you can walk out of it, it takes upwards of 2 hours to do, which you will probably starve to death/die of thirst.
Had a nice long game of this today, is there actually a point to any of it? Like to fix a chopper & fly the fuck out? Or do you basically just run around shooting zombies, looting corpses?
Hah, mate and I had an epic day, probably the most epic DayZ game yet.
Very big writeup (Vehicle Theft, Bandit Kills, Murders, Camp setup etc.)
~First of all both these characters at the start of the day are about three weeks old and geared with coyote packs/M4A1s/GPS/Maps etc and so on.
(we don't often have the opportunity to play but we only play together)~
Farming deer huts and hunting for a vehicle, very early in our logging in a nice chap on an ATV comes screaming down the hill in a Ghillie suit and goes roaring up the hill past us, completely oblivious to our presence and over towards Polenka factory.
We chase after him on foot and hear the engine kill. Immediately we start packing it that this guy knew what he was doing and was going to ambush us with the high ground and visibility advantage.
We divide and start flanking, can't find the guy but we do find a motorbike hidden in the trees. Puzzled where the ATV went we figured it was two clan guys out to repair the vehicle/s with the factory/industrial spawns.
So we quickly nabbed the motorbike and tore off which we found it to have had 5 full jerry cans and quarter tank. We quickly learned how easy it is to break DayZ vehicles (esp. motorbike wheels just on uneven ground, try to stick to roads/clearings with these things). The new mission came to be repairing the wheels, which lead us back to Polenka factory. Lo and behold we found the ghillie suit gentleman in the trees near where we found the motorbike.
I politely shot him in the back (ok it was more the front as I stumbled across him and he turned around, in a panic I opened fire first :P). We looted the plethora of items he had (pretty much everything you'd need) and hid the body.
We get enough wheels to repair the motorbike and embark on our journey to a suitable tent location, stopping by a deer hut on the way a bit of lag/bug? O.o I accidently shoot my mate in the head and he dies :( (in my defense on my screen I hit the zombie nowhere near him, but it was definitely me as I scored the murder). Looted everything I could and we lost one of our coyote backpacks.
No problem, I head for the coast on the new trusty steed. Only to have it become stuck between some powerlines that touched ground level from a mountain (I was in a rush and bush bashing). Oh dear, wheels broke enough to be unable to get up the hill again! So back to Polenka factory solo it was for me.
I spent around an hour picking up all the loot and throwing it away to force loot to respawn, slowly burning through the ammo I had remaining and began using up the ammo my mate was carrying.
With two clips to spare the second and final wheel spawns just in time to eat the lats remaining piece of food I had. With no food, ~6000 blood, no morphine, no painkillers, a single bandage, no sidearm ammunition and barely any of the only type I had remaining.. the obnoxiously loud M4A1 I took off back to the motorbike, this time I stuck to the roads (oh so much better an idea).
I tore through Solnichiny so fast the entire town pulled along behind me like a freight train and I would say I barely stopped in time not to run over my mate who was waiting at the gas station except that at ~98mph it takes awhile to stop.
Onto Berezino, bandits, broken legs and a story of camaraderie.
We figured now that we were reunited and ballin' with a motorcycle that hit and runs would be wise, minimize losses and maximise gains. So my mate hopped off (oh yes you can double on motorbikes) on the outskirts with a makarov and clip of ammo he found whilst re-spawned. This went well until the dreaded wall-zombie breaks your leg routine when you have no morphine. No problem right? I'll just drop off the motorbike in some thick shrub and pop on by to the hospital to pick up some Morphine and restock on some blood and painkillers whilst I'm at it.. No worries!
I'm traveling down Berezino main street, hugging one of the buildings trying to work out which was the hospital. Suddenly I've heard two guys talking on direct comms and hear my name and something about "is that your friend" repeated a few times, a few shots ring out at my feet and dance like a chicken and fired a few well placed rounds square into the head of one of the Hospital-Rooftop bandits. I was pretty stoked on the shooting at the range and angle difficulty.
Quickly got out of there and doubled around to the shopping center, figured I might luck on morphine there and just forget the rooftop bandits.
No such luck, it was hospital or nothing. Throughout this time my mate was unable to move, stuck atop some stairs to one of those hotels, fortunately of which had a very narrow window of overwatch to the hospital roof, so I had some eyes to keep track of what angle of view this chap on the roof had. Though large and by far most of his viewing angle remained unknown to me.
M67 Frag Grenade! Oh yes! I figured at best if I don't hit this guy it'll scare the shit out of him. Well, I didn't manage to hit him with the grenade (to my knowledge) when I attempted to lob it onto the roof, but it made sure he never came to the very edge of the building again.
By now I wanted and was determined to kill this random, they had wire trapped the place to buggery and some poor innocent bastard was going to be next in line if it wasn't me.
I doubled back, way back, out of town kind of back and circled around to the high ground. Couldn't see him with binoculars so I assumed he was behind part of the building I couldn't see and was third person cornering. He was third person cornering alright but he was prone against the edge lip as I could see his backpack, I took 5 or 6 timed shots from the M4 which were hitting close but I lacked the height for the angle to hit but that didn't matter as it scared him enough to move. I doubled back, way back, out of town kind of back again and decided I was over playing cat and mouse with this guy, concerned either his friend would show up or some other third parties would. I fiddled with the idea of raiding the hospital underneath and getting out quickly but there was so many zombies around it was just as dangerous and difficult a move without a silenced weapon as taking this guy out.
I figured after awhile since neither my stuck overwatch could see this guy moving nor could I that he was now on the defensive and scared, so I would attempt the frontal assault via the ladder. Slowly tapping away rung by rung to climb so I didn't make any noise until I was nearly at the top where sure enough my 'once happy to attempt to blow my head off' friend was cowering prone in the corner darting his view back and forth between the two different ladders, occasionally averting direction to third person over the nearby ledge. When he finally turned his back I flipped over the edge just as he turned towards me. Thankfully for whatever reason I was faster and put a half a clip of M4A1 in his face, securing a new Alice Pack, M4A1 CCO SD, NVGs and a few other goodies. The hospital was looted, I narrowly avoided having my head blown off by my mate as I went up the stairs to administer morphine (our background comms dropped out conveniently at the worst time). We loot the shopping center and get back to our motorbike.
We did indeed manage to set up camp at an undisclosed location. Which we now have two tents a motorbike and a bunch of spare gear.
Had a nice long game of this today, is there actually a point to any of it? Like to fix a chopper & fly the fuck out? Or do you basically just run around shooting zombies, looting corpses?
One thing that needs to be fixed is the logout timer, imo.
I was sitting high up in cherno, overlooking the hospital with an Enfield, took a shot (about 300m) at a guy on the hospital roof and hit him first time. He went down and didn't move. I ended up shooting an entire clip at him (a bunch hit but he didn't die) and then he vanished.
No murder, just a wasted clip and 50 odd zombies chasing me.
Never saw him come back on, but I checked for his body and didn't hear flies, nor did I see anything.
The time your char stays around really needs to go up to like 30 sec or something, imo. I must have been really damn close to killing him, since I hit him atleast 4 times center mass.
Since I got pkd today I decided to make some new fun. Here's what you do:
1. Spawn and run through a massive town, collecting as many zombies to chase you as possible.
2. Find another player who's trying to be quiet, they will either shoot you or let you go, either way you've attracted a massive horde of zombies to them, 90% chance they will die.
3. Laugh at the carnage you caused.
I ran through a town with a big warehouse, zombies in tail, come across two other players while climbing ladders etc. Got to the top of a roof and the zombies followed. All 3 players (myself included) were stuck on a roof with impending doom following.
I leaped off the roof killing myself and I'm pretty sure they were boned.
Blehhh, accidently killed by my mate.
Which is fine we have plenty of gear to restore.
But jesus fuck rocket has ruined the start game.
why, WHY start with painkillers. Needs to be morphine seeing as the zombies can break your fucking legs through a wall. Start has become retarded shit. As well as Rambo's with makarov's who think they're cool killing people with no weapon.
The next build is going to reduce the chances of leg breaking thank fuck. I'm not sold on the stance that if you give the new players nothing that people will be less likely to kill them. I feel the need more than ever to kill indiscriminately when i get my hands on a gun to get the bear essentials together (food, water, hatchet, knife, matches, compass). Essentially I now hunt the coast for a while where as before I would head inland almost immediately.

That sounds pretty hilarious. Can zombies climb ladders?
I'm pretty geared up atm all I need is some morphine and i'm set.I'm gonna wait for some buddies before i start going for the high value places though.(barracks etc)
Had a mate die of an infection today, antibiotics are so goddamn rare.
Had a great time last night, was roaming the lands with 5 of us, we scored ourselves six vehicles, including two hatchbacks, a tractor, a bus and two army grade pick-up trucks. I use the tractor to roam around the lands picking up any extra weapons or anything, and to visit the NW airport quickly and efficiently.
So apparently the DayZ hive has been receiving some lovely DDOS attempts, which might be due to the recent wave of BattleEye bans having angered someone. I joined an ANZ server earlier this morning and it connected fine, our car stash was safely still there so all good.
Just found a BizonSD and a wicked assault rifle at a chopper crash (had a Hatchet and Makarov up until then) and then as I headed away from the crash site I stumbled onto a trail bike hidden in some bushes!
I would of had a ball buzzing along the coast on my new bike but the thought of someone shooting me for the vehicle and finding my new guns put me off...
I think they are timed. Also someone knows where we've stashed our cars and such. We had a jeep and now its gone missing, though our 100 Stanag magazines are still there...
Well that was fun. Playing on NZ8 and had a whole stack of items, then suddenly the entire server gets nuked and everyone
Same just happened on NZ5... after about 10 deaths trying to re-equip, finally had Alice Pack, Ghillie suit and a gun etc.
The game has turned to shit imo. Taking a very extended break/onto the next game until bugs are fixed and shit is worked out.
Excessive bleeding/breaking of legs with no weapon. Buggy as shit zombies, hackers instant killing everyone to force you back to the what is now absolutely horrendous start of the game.

Just not worth it until things are fixed.
I like starting with nothing. The thing that sucks the most is the disconnecting in firefights. I'm guilty of doing it a couple of times, but it needs to be addressed. More vehicles too, or they despawn faster if stored away.
Really? You like starting with nothing? with bugging fucking zombies that teleport through 6 concrete walls or through entire buildings and hit you, then break your leg or force you to bleed.
Then force you to go through a 10 minute "loading" section just to respawn for some anti-social to think he's pro killing you when you have absolutely nothing on you not even a hatchet.
Yeah totally awesome.
The game currently is in shambles, starting with nothing would be fine if the zombies weren't a bugged off absolute joke. Oh zombies hitting you through walls or through floors (yeah those crawler guys can sometimes crawl through subfloors) , hell just even the inconsistency in their "range" and how they teleport/bug/sprint indoors sometimes is just a joke.
Starting with nothing with the current amount of bugs is a joke.
Sure there are a lot of bugs, and this is most likely due to it being in alpha, but I haven't had this much fun in a game for awhile now. I'm currently hosting a 6 person LAN at my place and it is utterly hilarious playing DayZ. We've gone from starting with nothing to sniping in Cherno and robbing some clan member of a helicopter by swarming them with axes.
This mod has so much potential and varying degrees of fun that I can only see it getting better, something that Rocket and his team have said they are working towards doing as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The bugs are annoying, but they're getting worked on. Remember this game is alpha. I haven't had much problems with the zombies since 1.7.1.5, neither has a couple of my friends. Those another one of our friends has been having problems with them. The problem with the zombies is they are spawned client side, not server side. So in high latency servers (when I play on US servers for instance) they behave all fucked up like when there are a few people around.

I like this mod and have had more enjoyment playing it than I did diablo 3. It's so much fun, but so annoying sometimes.
Was it a working helicopter!? What server? I didn't think the ANZ servers had working choppers in them.
The two major things that need some work are disconnecting in firefights and lack of vehicles.
I tried to get in before, managed to get in but it just sat there waiting to create character, then next time it connected, then just disconnected, now they're all full.

Well I dunno, the Z's are all screwed up on my end. I usually ping ~60ish to the servers. GTX590 etc. and frame rates are always fine.
Z's teleport and run through buildings, rubber band, run through walls, stand still slapping at me and hitting me from the other side of a building, ditto again when they can be at one entrance and I'm at the other entrance and they should be walking etc. All extremely frustrating.
Alpha or no, this is the basic stuff that should be being fixed first.
Lol mephz knows sure how to run an alpha.. you'd make a good coder if you can guarantee that there's not going to be any bugs by alpha mephz. Almost like you don't need a alpha, beta or nothing. Just go straight to release.
Alpha or no, this is the basic stuff that should be being fixed first.
And that's what Rocket and co are doing now. Fixing the bugs. Due to the zombies being spawned on the clients end, it needs to send the information to the server, then to other clients around. So you'll get zombies being weird in highly populated areas.
Almost like you don't need a alpha, beta or nothing. Just go straight to release.
Most mods are developed by making changes, testing in-house and then [alpha/beta] releasing to the public (or closed group) for more comprehensive testing to ensure the new feature/fix works well with the overall game mechanics. The DayZ guys do this to an extent, but quite a few code changes make it to public release without being test at all, which often introduces a whole heap of new bugs, some of which are unrelated.
For example:
[NEW] Player body exists for five seconds after disconnect (UNCONFIRMED IF WORKING)
Why not confirm it before release? OH, "it's alpha", OF COURSE. That makes it ok then.

Actually you'd have realised my point if you had not gone off on a childish rant was that I was referring to fixing major problems before worrying about introducing or altering gameplay (altering how zombies see you/hear you, altering starting equipment and so on as examples).
Now as it stands IF they ever fix the zombies, the gameplay will be altered drastically anyway since their behaviour would no longer be completely screwed an thus the gameplay mechanics will likely need altering again anyway.
Currently they a 'optimising' zombie aggro for broken ass zombies, that is illogical. It makes sense to fix them first then optimise.
Unless of course, you don't know how to fix them and are trying to hide this fact which seems likely with each successive patch.
If 'Alpha' means you should optimise and tweak your broken stuff then perhaps you are right.

Maybe it was working in house but didn't work when deployed? I know that the ARMA engine doesn't support this sort of thing and I think the devs are actually releasing a patch to allow for this feature.

Have you got the latest ARMA beta patch installed? I know this has fixed some of my issues.
You gotta keep in mind too that the ARMA engine wasn't designed for this type of game, so it's a lot of testing what does and doesn't work. 1.7.1.1 through to 1.7.1.5 was a quick series of patches that made the zombies harder (like they should've been) and addressed a lot of the problems with them quickly (like super hearing and xray vision).

Super Hearing and Xray vision is a fix to an issue they implemented earlier from attempts at tweaking, tweaks which were done to an already completely broken mechanic.
I have no problems with them tweaking things, but fix the big issue with them first.
They did indeed fix the issues of zombies whilst running in open fields teleporting and most part of the death lag issues. But then they just sort of stopped there and started tweaking instead, they haven't attempted to fix how they interact with buildings and such (which is pretty horrendous).
If your vehicle was only running on half its engine would you tune it first? or fix it then tune it? mmm
You really have to remember this is a alpha version of a mod for a game that is already seriously buggy. Sure I've raged a few times at zombies suddenly appearing in the room and breaking my bones, but I get back up and go about my day enjoying the game.
Rocket and his crew are definitely working hard, because they know that this kind of mod is eagerly wanted, just look at how everyone has lapped it up. There will be bugs. It happens with development and we need to remember that. A patch that fixes one thing will break 10 more, it is just how things work.
Mephz is a spoiled brat complaining about a mod he didn't pay for, for a game he didn't want. Congratulations, you've found the internet, now you sound like it too.
PS: Just because they're releasing new stuff while old stuff is broken doesn't mean broken stuff isn't being worked on. Too many chefs spoil the broth you can't have 12 people all working at once to try and fix the code which causes zombies to blink. But, as a pro game development manager, you'd totally get that. That's why you're offloading this wonderful advice i assume.

lol that wasn't even the argument at all.
Not even going to try to have a discussion on it with you skythra, you're just a bit of a childish wanker really aren't you.

Wait, who's crying about the toy that they got before christmas?
Bluntly; the games not at release but you cry cry cry.

Pretty much this. It's alpha, there are bugs a plenty, the game engine is being pushed to do things it doesn't normally do. The zombies are much better than they were in 1.7 i
