The Secret World has its first beta weekend this weekend and for anyone who's keen to check it out, Gamespot are currently giving away free keys. All you need is a Gamespot account (a free one, not a paid one) and you can get a key by going here

http://au.gamespot.com/event/codes/secret-world-pc/

I'm keen to check this out, its one of the only other MMOs I'm really interested in atm, has the potential to be something pretty cool and different.

Got myself a cd key and have the client installed and ready to go. This and Guild Wars 2 are the only MMO's I'm truly excited about.

got a key and will install tonight. Wondering how this turns out and hope it's not a total cluster that AoC was past 20.

Downloading this now and god damn is the speed erattic. Sometimes it maxes out at 700kbs other times it falls down to 24kbs. The fuck is going on? is the server getting so hammered I can't even get a stable speed?

Get on their forums and let them know. I've spent soooo much time talking to the Funcom guys over the years about how important having local mirrors is but they just don't really get it I think :(

Unless I find a different source to download from I doubt i'll be ready in time tomorrow. The speeds are just too god damn erratic. Maybe i'll get on in time to play a few hours before the event ends. Not looking good so far for first impressions.

I just don't think they were ready for the load, there was a post on their facebook page about how over a million people are signed up for this first beta weekend, and I guess they didn't think ahead about the best way to distribute the game client to a million people.

Restarted client and getting between 300 - 600kbs even while playing tera. Though I suspect that this is misleading as the speed at which the file count goes up doesn't seem to change. Oh well should be ready tomorrow!

Also client is 11gb

Strange. Seems like having something else open that constantly used my net connection (tera) stabilized the speed and never dipped below 500. Just finished the download and loaded up the game to mess with options. DX11? Tessilation options? bunch of advanced sliders for more powerful users? Sounds good to me!

Can't even edit your character? All you can do is change their clothes? Good work.

EDIT - oh god the opening cutscene is almost laughable how bad it is. I mean this is the very first look we get at the game (at least some of us) and there is model issues with you being able to see through the dudes neck. Also what's up with that chicks accent it's weird.

Yeah it was a tad strange, though might be some issues with localisation. Still, enjoying it so far, the cutscenes are pretty good and the combat is nice.

Maybe it gets better later on but from what i've seen this is just not for me. I don't like anything about it. Already shut it down.

You can edit your character, heaps of options for the faces and stuff, can't change the body type though.

Only just started now, maybe it depends on what faction you pick but the opening cutscene was fine for me, didn't get any model issues or anything. The accents were a bit weird, but I went with the Templars and they're from Europe so I guess it doesn't matter too much if the person who comes to recruit you has a weird European accent.

Weirdest thing for me so far, coming from ToR, is that your character seems to be completely mute. Makes some of the cutscenes feel a bit awkward.

I'm digging the music though. Time to actually play it and see what the gameplay is like I guess :P

The setting is really awesome. Love being in a modern world for once and actually knowing the places I'm running through are real. Also I think you can only go Templar at the moment it seems.

Yeah I think they are getting hammered, had that problem last night, appeared after 5-10 minutes. I believe there were more then a million players signing up for the beta weekend.

I heard they aren't offering refunds if you bought the game and don't like it, good thing I didn't pre-order.

like when you go to a movie and it sucks and you don't like it and ask for your money back?!@

Of course it's not illegal! You can get a refund if the game doesn't perform as advertised, but not just because you don't like it.

Yeah from what I hear they are saying if you play the beta you are locked into buying it or something like that. Wonder how many people bought the super expensive, $200 pack and then hated the game and cant get their money back.

You don't pre-order a movie. You should always be able to cancel a pre-order, if you buy it at retail and decide you don't like it then tough luck.

Besides if they want to use a beta as a marketing tool to prop up pre-orders then why can't we use it to demo the game and see if we like it?

I believe you can still get your money back, either by a) asking for a refund on a pre-order or b) calling up your credit card and getting a refund.

Its pretty cool, I'm enjoying it so far, I really like the setting and all the lore and stuff, something new and fresh besides yet another fantasy setting. Just fought one of those Revenant dudes that form out of flocks of crows, that was pretty sweet. My dude is cruising around throwing fire and lightning at zombies and then caving their heads in with a sledgehammer when they get close.

I like the minimalist UI as well, and how stuff like dialogue options and quests on NPCs are overlaid in the world rather than popping up new windows, pretty neat.

The main thing thats annoying me at the moment is you seem to be SEVERELY limited in how many quests you can take at once. So many times I've been on a quest, and find another NPC with quests but I can't take the quests he/she offers without it cancelling the quest I'm already on. Pretty gay really.

Still dunno if I'll buy it though, just cos I don't know if I'll have enough time to play it, but I'm enjoying it.

Also, sif pre-order a game you know almost nothing about, having never played it or read reviews of it or anything. Anyone retarded enough to do that deserves no refunds anyway, maybe it'll teach them an important lesson.

I've been spoiled by Tera I think. It's hard to go back to the standard mmo way after having so much control over my character during combat and being able to dodge attacks.

I just found out you can cast while running, that just made combat much more fun for me. I was barely using the elemental abilities I had learned cos they all had cast times and I thought I had to stand still to cast, then I accidentally discovered I can cast them all while running around, wasn't expecting to be able to do that.

Its awesome that the quests are mostly all voiced with like cutscene intros and stuff, cos for me thats kind of the bar I expect things to be at now after ToR. But I really wish the player characters were voiced too, all the conversations end up feeling very one-sided when your character just stands there as a mute. Same problem I had with the first Dragon Age game actuually.

Only time I pre-order is if I truly know I will enjoy the game, in regards to Diablo 3 or Guild Wars 2. Those games I know I will enjoy and play way too many hours.

The more I play it, the more I really like it, the whole setting and story behind it is pretty awesome, and the writing and the voice acting is actually really good which does a lot to sell it.

Still a bit rough around the edges, I get weird freezes at times where everything locks up for like 3 or 4 seconds then comes good again, I dunno if its cos its streaming in new assets or something, but its a bit annoying. And the severe limit on how many quests you can take still bugs me a bit, but I'm adjusting.

Still don't think I can justify buying it though, with D3 and ToR and everything on my pile of shame thats begging to be played, I just wouldn't have time for it. If it wasn't a monthly subscription I'd probably buy it and play it here and there when I could, but not worth paying a monthly subscription for something I'd barely have any time to play :(
