Hope there are some major limitations in place to measure and restrict leavers and categories games into skill levels.

A league system like StarCraft II has would be brilliant. It could be based on experience you earn in games, not just kills. Otherwise kill stealing would be even more rife.

Im surprised your mates didnt get beta keys to give to friends. Hopefully the beta keeps getting bigger with more invites and aussie servers.

I'd be happy with that, after they introduce the leveling system so you don't have to play with noob feeders that seem to appear every weekend.
|
Anyone who wants a DOTA 2 invite and is _ACTUALLY GOING TO PLAY IT OFTEN_
PM me your steam username or account name or whatever the hell I need to type into the 'send gift recipient' thing.
If your only going to 'take a peek' please don't send me a PM - there are others out there that will get more use out of it - wait until it goes full free-to-play.
PS. Is there an Ausgamers steam account I can gift the invites have to so they can be handed out in a fair way (random for long term members or whatever) ?

That's like 80% of HON and DOTA2 games these days. The lack of harsh punishments for players that leave/disconnect is causing these games to be the biggest fucking waste of time known to man.

Its still beta. I have high hopes they will soon implement a setting to combat disconnections like the leaver % in HON.

I find the quiter rate to be much lower then HoN, the community is much, much better then HoN as well.
I think the process that Dota2 does with getting people searching for games to have to accept the found game weeds out a lot of less-then-enthusiastic people.
As annoying as it is to have to wait for 3 attempts to get 10/10 players, I'd much rather that then get games where someone is AFK or quit within the first 5 mins of the game.
Also for Dota2, someone who abandons games is quickly put on a 'low priority' list that pretty much means they need to search for 30+mins to get in a game, probably with other quiters haha
An interesting thing happened to me, I had a long string of wins and good games bringing me up to 50/50 win/loss. However ever since reaching it the win/loss has been hovering around that level, perhaps the match making does take into account some sort of stats work?

Yeah, i heard about the low priority list. Suck shit fuckers.
Supposedly there is a stats system in place behind the game where the higher colour you are, the better player you are based on those stats. Ive found this generally to be true as ive been blue/pink lately and been the best on the team while when im brown or whatever im often struggling to be the worst. Its not 100% accurate but ive learnt to try to prevent the lowest 2 colours on the team from taking mid as they normally are not the best on the team.

It doesn't take that long.
We had a leaver in our group, all it changed average search from 3:30 to ~5mins for instance. Sometimes it went almost double the average search time.
It's not really harsh enough. last edited by step at 10:34:51 02/May/12

It is strange, you see people complaining about waiting 5-15 mins for a normal game. I always get games 30s-5mins.
HoN had the colour indicated a persons relative stats to the other players. I really hope dota2 does the same (silly they wouldn't, it is an important aspect). That would really only work if Dota2 is currently tracking stats and using that during matchmaker.
Also, Lion is a monster of a support player.Brown and OJ are best to take support heroes like Lion, defiantly not carries.
|
10% for hon leaver protection... and its OFF by default and the amount of people that turn it on when making games is VERY small (maybe 1 in 20 games?)
10% is WAY to high as well.
The other problem with hon leaver is that disconnectors that disconnect and reconnect 5+ times a game are not flagged as a leaver for that game. So everyone is running around at lvl 20 and you have this fuckwit on capped net or wireless or whatever that is lvl 4... CMON GIMME A BREAK HON
The other issue is that people votekicked dont get leaver, they get kicked.
The other issue is people who disconnect for the whole game but reconnect for the end dont get leaver.
The other issue is people who leave during the hero selection screen dont get leaver.
FUCKING HELL HOW BAD IS YOUR LEAVER SYSTEM WHEN THIS CRAP IS ALLOWED TO HAPPEN?
If you leave or disconnect for any reason for any amount of time you should get a leave stat. ALL games should be leaver protection on by default (and in my opinion unable to be turned off)

lol, ive never been a hardcore HON player so it didnt matter so much to me where as DOTA i find is a more hardcore version of HON so it does matter.
I too hate those that keep DCing then rejoining but thats been me lately (goddam telstra) but i doubt they would implement that as too many people have issues that cause connection problems so you might find 50% of people have occasional connection problems.

Nah, dont be a puss. There will always be feeders, ragers, DCs. You just gotta take the good with the bad. Play with friends to reduce the number of dodgy people in the game.

I don't understand how HON players can play DOTA2. It's like a Quake player quitting Quake and playing CS instead. Feels like gumby slow shit compared to HON, and the netcode is feels way worse too (Identical pings, but you barely notice it in HON, yet it _feels_ extremely laggy in DOTA2).
Such a shame.

O Dota2 is significantly better then HoN.
The pacing is slowed down a little, the team battles from about midway through are about the same intensity as HoN and the balancing of heroes is so far beyond HoN. The animations are Superior in Dota as are the effects. I personally think, since the UI update, the item pictures are better.
As for the netcode, I find it perfectly fine in Dota2. I had some issues with HoN that I don't get with Dota2.
My first few games I wasn't so sure, I thought HoN was the better for similar reasons as you pharacyde, however after about 10 games I didn't go back to HoN or wanted to in the least. Even with Dota2's slightly lower player base, slightly longer wait times and lack of player stats beyond what Dota2 offers.

Weird, I think the animations are leagues better in HON than DOTA2. Opinions are like assholes, I guess. And yeah the netcode thing is strange. I'll have a 250ping on a USW HON server and it feels excellent, and a 250ping in DOTA2 and I'm having to compensate heaps (especially for skillshot heroes like Pudge).
I far prefer where the HON metagame is at the moment though. An emphasis on heavy ganking and lots of burst damage, rather than "the team who's hard carry farms the best will win at 45 minutes!", which is fucking boring.
Regarding the Quake vs CS comparison, it was just a common complaint from dudes who played Quake back in the day then tried to play CS. It felt slow, awkward, clunky, imbalanced etc. I played both happily, too, but I played CS before I started playing Quake 3. The 'oldschool' guys who played Quake, Q2 etc were far more accustomed to super fast, fluid gameplay, so much so that playing CS the way CS is meant to be played felt counter-intuitive to them. I kinda feel that way about HON/DOTA2.

Yeah i prefer HON over DOTA 2. I am not very good at both these games, but i just find with DOTA sometime i cant tell if ive used any my ablilties or not and in big battles i dont even know whats going on lol. Find in HON the hereos are bigger which is easier for me :)

Thats my biggest issue. Maybe it could be countered by warding jungle and ganking their carry to stop the feed but that doesnt happen much in pub games. Nothing shits me more than be playing the game for a while and suddenly out comes naix / ursa / lycan who totally dominates after a hard jungle.
You can easily win by pushing early against team full of heavy carries but often i find people dont understand that and are happy to jungle or sit in a lane and farm then complain when the other teams AM + void + BH rape end game.
I should try HON again. I was happy just playing noob games and fucking about with ganks / jukes. I never really tried playing it more competitively like i do DOTA.

Haha I remember when you started playing Q3 Pharcyde! So awesome.
I haven't tried a DotA game since DotA except LoL and it was pretty good but my machine is too fast to run it... my frames max out and overheat my machine and it crashes. Maybe that's because it is six years old though.
LoL is getting a huge eSports following, look out. I will definitely have to try DotA 2 but I don't want my machine to lag and get "noob" "gtfo" "lol".
One day.

Yeah, that kinda makes sense. I used to play CM but then i tried normal mode and found the game much more challenging and rewarding. CM doesnt punish you for dieing or allowing creeps to be denied but add those two factors in and it makes the game very different. As i said, DOTA to me seems more hardcore and not as noob friendly as HON.

CM? Is that easy mode or something? Asif.
Also for Dota2, if you haven't enabled right-click denies you are failing. Heaps better then pushing 'a' then clicking on the creep.
I also dislike lane partners that just autoattack creeps and screw up the last hitting so that creeps keep getting the last hit. You tell them not to auto-attack and why and they ignore you. Then get angry because the team isn't helping them when they keep dieing during to being over extended.

Yeah, my pet hate. I try to play with a mate who supports me while i last hit. We had a good combo of skeleton king + leshrac and could lvl 1 kill solo heroes in lane with our dual stun combo.

funnily enough, I'm finding DOTA pretty noob friendly atm. I'm fairy mediocre so I just keep going support classes and keep wards up and generally get props.
and I tend to get creeps down to about half and move to another so who ever i'm laning with gets the KB ... or am I doing it wrong?

Wards win games.
You need to enable Right-click denies through console. dota_allow_right_click_deny 1 or something like that. Silly that it isn't an option in settings, after the recent UI update it might be there, haven't looked. In fact, silly it isn't on by default :/
DOTA is more newb friendly in that the community is just plain nicer. HoN community is a massive festering pile of putrid entrails.
Glynd, you are partially correct. Leaving the last hit for the carry is great. Try not to hurt enemy creeps at full health, let them hurt yours first.
In general as support you are better off just focusing your last hit on denying your creeps to the enemy, leaving the last hits of enemy creeps to your carry. If you both perform that well, you will win your lane by a good margin.
What you don't want to do is damage their creeps to the point where you are always fighting at or near their tower. The closer to your tower you are, the safer you are, which is essential early game.
The only reason to push creeps early is because you are actively going for an early tower push. Generally that is done when the other team is heavy on late-game heroes and you need to win the game by 30-45mins before they can shine.

Glyd, Dragon Knight would be a good hero to step into when you are wanting to try out a carry. He can be a brutal carry later in the game, however if you fail to farm him up he is still useful as a tank/support.

To set console mode
1) In steam, right cilck on "Dota 2" and click on properties
2) Click on Set Launcher Options and type in: -console
3) Press OK and enter the game, to remove the console from view press the ` key.
dota_force_right_click_attack 0 to disable.
dota_force_right_click_attack 1 to enable.
This i also think it needs:
dota_disable_range_finder 0 - by default you only see the range of spells when you hover your mouse on the spell icon. With this set to 0 it will show you the range when you actually click to use the spell on someone. Default = 1.

thanks for that console tips guys, quite handy - i forgot that it's a source game.
http://www.dota2wiki.com/wiki/Console_Command_List
for anyone else who is interested
dota_force_right_click_attack #
Disabled is 0(default), Enabled is 1. Denying creeps no longer requires you to force attack, it now only requires a right click.
dota_minimap_hero_size ###
Default is 600. Sets the size of heroes on the minimap. Getting annoyed because they are too big? Set it to something else.
dota_disable_range_finder #
Enabled is 1(default), Disabled is 0. When this is enabled, it will show the range of your abilities as if you were hovering over the skill, but instead when you are preparing to cast it. For blinking abilities, it draws a line from your hero to the mouse (this line does not stop, still handy for 100% accuracy).
dota_use_player_color #
Enabled is 1(default), Disabled is 0. By disabling this, players will use their team color instead. A lot of players have been asking for this.
dota_health_per_vertical_marker ###
Default is 200. This will tell the game where you want those black tallies in a health bar, useful for players who would prefer them at different intervals.
tv_nochat #
Default is 0, Enabled is 1. This turns off Spectator chat.
con_enable #
Default is 0, Enabled is 1. Makes it so when you close the console, you can still open it up without restarting by hitting your ` (grave/tilde) key again.
chat_join ____
Type in whatever chat channel you want to join/create.
dota_camera_lock #
Default is 0, Enabled is 1. This will make your camera follow around your hero.
triple edit - this one looks pretty cool
dota_killcam_history_time 20
dota_killcam_show 0
