Guild Wars 2 Server Location -> Texas = Bad For Oceanics

Not sure if it's Dallas or Austin, but Texas for sure

Not good news for Aussies, or oceanic folks in general.

My ping according to speedtest.net is >400ms to both (node) which makes competitive PvP impossible.

Very disappointing.

Its going to be really hard to give up SWTOR's Oceanic servers if ping is > 400 for GW2.

There has been talks ages ago of the possibility for Oceanic servers, but no real current news. Hopefully with how successful SWTOR's Oceanic servers have been, it could stir the market up.

kinda sucky since it looks like the game relies a lot on minimal lag.

I'll have to ping the servers when I get home to see what I get, but if it's anything like WoW I can just buy a tunnel to get my good ol' 150-200ms.

I watched the video of the dragon battle from some dog archer perspective and all I could think about was the latency issues. Now you've posted this, i've decided not to pre-order.

Think again, Texas is a long way from USWest. I'd be surprised to see anyone from AU get near under 200.

Definitely not pre-ordering until people get some more info on lag. 3-400 will be shithouse in a game with dodges etc.

My speed test to austin is giving me 280ms so while that isn't great it's not that much higher than in wow where I average about 240ish. Though I'm really not sure why my -diag results send me to Dallas, then LA, then back down to Texas. What kind of shit is that?

Tunnels don't magically give you a better ping, your data is still travelling the same distance, so you're not going to get a better ping than you get when you manually ping the servers, even with a tunnel. The only reason tunnels used to make WoW latency better is because they changed some settings on the connection that made it send data differently

You might be able to do the single player element of the game with such a high ping but even then it would be a horrible experience. But yeah, pvp would be out of the question.

Would be interested to see what results people are getting from pinging the GW2 servers.

As has been said, that will give a pretty good idea of the pings that we'll get in best case scenarios.

Well the weird thing is that Guild Wars 2 apparently has a datacenter in Texas that you connect to as US, and then after that you can choose between US Server Center or EU Server Center. So not sure what the pings are going to be like, best bet is to wait till Saturday and see first hand.

If servers are the downfall of playability for a such a awesome looking game, I'll be quite upset. Test results are around 248-249ms so somewhat playable considering original server I was on in Star Wars had this.

Oh yeah, from Reddit:
This is just the authentication server. Doesn't mean anything. It won't determine your "ping" while playing.
And this is the same as GW1. I play on the European districts in GW1, but when I login, it goes to a server in Austin, TX as well. Actually, it's in the exact same network segment as the login servers for GW2.
GW1 login servers are: auth1.arenanetworks.com [64.25.39.x]
GW2 login servers are: auth1.101.arenanetworks.com [64.25.38.x]
Once you are authenticated, you'll connect to your World server (EU or NA).

Since when has ping ever been an issue in any MMO ever? with the obvious exception of daoc mezzing classes?

The US servers are in Texas. The authentication servers are also in Texas, so the EU folks go there for logging in but play on their EU servers.

Really hope that it will be playable. 250ms is about the absolute best ping that aussies can hope for connecting to Texas.

Keep in mind that 250ms will roughly increase your reaction time by x3 compared with someone <100. I used to play competitive FPS and 250 would render even the best players non competitive.

Hopefully GW2 is more forgiving.

I don't think 250 will be a problem. If it is, Arenanet must be the silliest company in the world to spend so long on a game only to leave it unplayable for people in Oceania/Asia.

250ms will be a pretty serious disadvantage in PvP.

even in wow pve raiding latency is a pain in the ass, and often contributes to wipes
the most recent example that comes to mind is heroic warmaster blackhorn, soaking barrages. you'll see your soaking partner's toon literally standing on top of your own 1 second or so before the barrage hits, yet you'll cop the full hit and get the debuff, but they take no damage. before the 5/10/15% nerfs came in this was a constant cause of wiping and there was nothing you could do about it except try again and hope for the best

Since we got to experience what low-latency is actually like in an MMO.

I was blind, but now I can see. Local servers or GTFO.

My speed test to Dallas was bad, just under 600ms.

This does not make me feel good....and I just bought it off greenman this morning. :(

Any MMO with competitive PvP.

If you have played on SWTOR's oceanic servers, the difference is massive - even for normal PvE.

250 ping will increase your reaction time significantly.
