Looking for feedback on my first attempt editing a video, its supposed to show the road from 0-1000 kills (gold skin) with one of the worst guns in COD. The shots that one hit kill are from after you get the damage perk for the gun, actually hitting about 85% of the time in the video, just doesn't kill a lot of the time for some reason... even then its temperamental. If you got a good vid chuck it up. The blops thread was pretty active and some more cod discussion is needed to balance out the bf3 mountain sniping thread.
anyone know how to make it play 720p by default? evidently it looks very blurry on 360&480
If it's feedback you want.
Good: No cliche transitions everyone does on their first video
I guess the music was meant to be "western" to match the oldass shotty, bit boring for younger people (I'm older so I pictured clint eastwood owning everyone)
Not good: Encoding quality looks pretty damn low, even for 480p
It's all just some guy running around with a shotgun, there's no variety, no cool kill cams, no changing angles (3rd person, free roaming).
Not to shit in your cereal but it looks like it was just basic cut & paste that could be done in windows movie maker or even virtualdub. Spice it up with some text or slow motion stuff. Add a few instant replays of really awesome shots like if you jump off a ledge & own someone in the FACE!
p.s. that shield trick wouldn't work in the games I play on. You'd have your ass handed to you from the sides, velociraptor styles. Clever girl.
dunno why it looks so shit on 320/480 - looks fine on 720.
whole point of the song and clips was that it was meant to be like, my little journey to get the gold 1887 (1000 kills) so i set it to ecstasy of gold from the good the bad and the ugly - get some culture in you (westerns rule) - but fuck the haters anyway, that song is god damn awesome. Probably couuld have done a better job explaining that in the video, make a proper intro... really have no idea what im doing with that program so not much fanciness.
as far as the jumping goes, that gun is a fucken bitch to use (all those clips where it hits, thats what the cross in the middle of the crosshair means, but doesn't kill happen at least 50% of the time before you get it past ~500 kills and boost its damage and even then it fucks up) and you die in half a second unless you get creative with how you move, can understand why it would piss people that don't like cod off.
anyway, post some good bf3 videos and prove how much better it is than cod!
song was awesome.
riot shield kill was lols.
people don't really want to watch someone else playing unless it's a funny kill, super exploitive or just completely ridiculous pwnage.
tits may foster more interest.
is that first video really COD footage? it looks horrid?
The first thing I notice when switching to play some MW3 after having played BF3 is actually the sound. The guns all sound so completely limp compared to the amazing sound-field in BF3.
1) Yea, there are a number of 'kills' with that shotty, but either the game was laggy or you got lucky 'snatch' shooting (whipping the mouse around clicking in the middle of the movement) coz it looked like a loooot of misses.
2) Solid enough editing. Pieced together well enough, and I like the climax of the song arriving as the Mini gun did :P
Shotty shield biz was awesome, and for anyone who's not a fan of that song; the problem isn't the song.
Questions for you:
What are you using to capture? Fraps/PlayClaw?
Questions for all:
I'm looking to start doing similar (and editing vid footage too) does anyone have any recommendations for pimp video editing software?
Does anyone recommend any light reading/references for basic vid editing skills?
(I'm familiar with 'continuity', and context etc... more interested in some basic 'how to's I guess)
And, but ONE example of BF3 being more enjoyable than COD.
n.b. not my vid, just one I found in 2 mins...
Quick Q for the BF fans in here; am I the only one blown away moreso by the sound engineering in BF3 than the visuals?

I'm amazed at the sound in BF3. Really loving that part of the experience.
Re that chopper vid. Fuck me, that guy has some skills. Must be all he does in the game. I have only spent about 1min in choppers so far. Must plug in my joystick and give it a go.
(I've managed to cap the 'tunnel' flag on the Damavand Peak in the Little-bird in live games several times)
IMO Desert combat is still the best way to practice Helo skills in the BF franchise despite the cyclic controls not being similar in any other BF franchise games.
Do note in that vid that as 1337 as that pilots skills are in and around the trees etc, he's not really using that helo to anything like it's full potential... the pilot is there to almost literally 'serve' the gunner...
(and also the vid really dodgily drops out for 20-30 seconds at a time in that vid I noticed after posting it too... soz :P)
Can you manoeuvre around like that using a keyboard and mouse? If so then great! :)
Absolutely mate. I drop my mouse sensitivity down one notch when ever i jump in a helo and i can fly like that not probs... takes a fair bit of prac tho but it's possible for sure.
All it takes is a little practice E.T. the thing I noticed most when switching from DC to BF:V (at the time) and similarly the rest of the BF franchise with helo's (aside from the obvious 'near hover' setting on the collcetive when not moving in a direction) is how lethargic the controls are.
Using a joystick it's a little easier to overcome, but it's just as playable with K+M once you know where you want the vehicle to be, and how you're going to use the control interfaces to get there.
BF1942 I just went out and bought a $50 logitech joystick. It was enough to pwn anybody using kb/mouse and lots more fun to pilot. Joystick only lasted about a year before it started showing age but it done the job. These days I stick to the ground. I don't enjoy the the new jets and heli's as much as the spitfires & corsairs in 1942.
bf certainly looks and sounds nice but i wouldn't go as far to say it's highly polished, there is quite a few bugs in bf3 and server crashes and shit that you just don't get in previous COD titles. can't speak for mw3 as i haven't played it

same same goes for the ground game Outlaw.
Tanking without weapon stabilisation, and with the attrocious 'round drop' the main gun on the '42 tanks had... meant you had to be on your game for bracketing targets and getting on target as quickly as possible...
I wish 3D spotting wasn't in the game also, I liked the way in '42 you had an icon on the map for the vicinity of the target, and then you had to go digging.
And yes I know the 'Hardcore' servers always have 3D spotting off, but there's dozens of other settings going on in there that make the game rubbish...
maybe if you had it so 3D spotting only worked for vehicles... that's plausible as a modern day tech...
If you can't kill someone in normal, it's coz you're shit.
Those cod videos were horrible... the guns sound worse than a fucking pop gun.
I've spent a fair amount of time as a gunner in the chopper, learning what the really good pilots do. I'm getting good at surviving as pilot, just not too good at killing things yet. I can't hit shit all in the jets though.
I'd love to pave, unfortunately empty servers aren't much fun to be on (I guess there are at least bots for '42...)
As sad as the market being dominated by COD and BF is, at least there's a reasonable player base for them... I went to log into BF3 on Sunday just gone (at midday mind you), and there were 3 servers with players in them, and only one of them had more than 6 players in it.
The BF franchise are pretty rubbish FPS (in the very sense of the term... the actualy 'running around on foot' part of the game has always felt very crappy imo) if it weren't for the vehicle play in the game, I think the UT/Quake franchises would be a lot more popular at the moment.

Google bitrates, then when you go to encode the video, make sure it's as high, but no higher, than what youtube wants the bitrate to be. If it's higher, it'll get re-encoded at a bad rate, and frankly, re-encoding always ruins things.
Then for other sites, upload the better quality higher bitrate versions.
Something I learned in q3 days is that things at 480p could look damn nice fullscreen if you have a high bitrate.
so what bitrate are you talking about? I wish there was a page somewhere that just gave the exact settings that youtube wants to maximise quality etc etc
Apparently anything more than 30fps is brought back down to 30 too?
Video encoding bitrate in your export dialog settings. I don't use premiere so I have no idea where you might find it but you can set video kbps low and it'll give you a small file, but it'll look crap or you could set it large and it'll give you a huge file, it'll look great but no one will want to download a 30 second video if it's 200 meg. You need to find somewhere happy in the middle.
There's a few youtube videos around on how to set various encoders for optimum youtube goodness, no official ones though I don't think. There was a page listing some suggested settings on youtube's help page years ago, dunno if they're still there.
I always see so much bullshit on the whole topic. Some people say you want to give youtube as higher quality as you can and let it encode it back down, others say thats bad - it seems like that could be the case given the 360/480 on this video - I encoded at 8mbps and it looks worse than vids ive encoded at 5mbps.
I also heard that youtube will scale down anything you upload to 30fps but recording with fraps @ 30 fps looks shite, choppy as shit.
That's why you record in fraps at 90 or 100fps or whatever (personally I use 60) and then just convert it to 30fps in your video editor. In virtualdub that's somewhere in the video menu, in premiere I have no idea where it would be.
Oh and in case you're unaware (and so is trog) it's spelled Premiere. Chrome (and probably firefox) will attempt to tell you that's wrong and cut the e off, might wanna edit the topic for spelling :)
