Global Steam Achievements - Nobody finishes the game?

So I stumbled across global steam achievements for skyrim today, and was kind of surprised that apparently 7% of the people who bought (or played?) it didn't finish the intro. I figured ok, maybe they just haven't had a chance to play it yet, etc. But while looking at the subsequent achievements (like reaching level 5), I noticed that player progress falls off a cliff.
I thought maybe they just weren't playing while online etc, so that steam achievements weren't being counted. But the high "finished the introduction" achievement rate suggests that at least nearly all of them are being tracked, but simply get no further.
I was getting curious, so then looked at Arkham City, and the stats were even worse. 17% apparently didn't get past the intro. The numbers drop off pretty quickly.
Ok, but that's two new games. What about a slightly less recent game which people have had time to play if they bought it? I checked out Deus Ex 3, and it's about the same. 10% of people never even earn the first achievement, less than 50% of buyers ever finish the game. Civ 5 was about the same (90% of people unlocked the most basic achievement) but did a little better with followup ones (sitting in the 80s and 70s for at least ten achievements). Portal 2 did not do so well, almost half of the people who bought it never finished it.
This surprises me a little. I know that not everybody has infinite time, but for tracked progress to drop off so dramatically could spell bad things for where devs might think is most worthwhile for putting their time (why bother focusing on a good ending if less than half the players ever even reach it?)
edit: Maybe it's just because its achievements are a little bit more difficult, but Shogun 2 looks very miserable, there were only 3 achievement markers that at least half of the players reached.

Yeah, I hardly ever finish games. The last two games I finished were MW2 and Limbo. All my other Steam games sit there untouched.

nerfy, maybe, just maybe with all the new games that have been released one of three things has happened
A) watched the intro, played a few minutes and thought sweet, this will be great come xmas when I have the time to play thru, in the mean, COD for quick gamer fixes
B) watched the intro, played 5 minutes and thought fuck, this is buggy i'll wait till skyrim is patched some more, or batman fixes DX11 which should have been done already because in all honesty why the fuck did it take so damn long otherwise
C) played a few minutes, and gone fuck, I really need a new video card, mouse, ram or other such part in order to play this
and like rev, I have a few game that have been untouched, or briefly looked at, and will be played when i can be arsed
(also, on a complete side note, in chrome with the spell checker, how come arsed is fine, but arse come up as incorrect???)

Heh, just be glad that it's not the eclipse spellchecker.
Yeah I have a fair few games that I've barely touched (Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Mirror's Edge, Abe's Exodus, etc). Fairly surprising that Portal 2 and Deus Ex have such low completion rates though (they've been out for a fair while now).

I'm luckily a uni student, and work casual so I have a shit load of time, thus a 110 hour play time in Skyrim, which in regards to main quest line, have only just seen the Greybeards. But other people might find it difficult to get such time as myself, having to work longer hours, kids etc.

Somewhat completed the Thieves Guild questline, I've been initiated and given clothing, but still have other stuff to do, many other side quests, companion quests, general exploring and ravaging, finding companions, which by the way found a wicked ass mercenary in Riften, his 500g to hire, equipped him in Forsworn gear, and he uses magic/shield+sword/bow when needed. Also heals me to.

Isn't it with Skyrim if you use console commands or install mods it can disable achievements? Might be similar with a lot of other games.
I haven't finished Skyrim, I was thinking of waiting until they get the mod support out officially but I might knock it over through xmas. Just finished Saints 3 but I actually would say the majority of my games in my Steam folder have not only not been finished but some have never been played because I bought them as publisher packs during sales.
I just looked at my games list and there is actually a shit load of games I didn't even know I owned, when the fuck did I buy Alpha protocol or football manager 2011?

Skyrim doesn't actually stop giving you achievements if you use the console. Don't know where that rumour came from, I've been using TCL to get out of glitched traps and still get achievements.

I am one of the people that played 20min of Skyrim before I stopped.
Might try get into it again some day. Combat (and the rest of the game I spose) just seemed really gay and boring...
I finished Morrowind, never got into Oblivion though.

I agree with Copius.
I got a copy of Saints Row 3 to try, loaded it up and thought it was cool but it made my system cry so i wont be able to play it til i upgrade. Stopped playing after about 30mins.
Skyrim was good and all but combat is my thing and i found it pretty limited. Stopped playing after about 2 hours.
Deus Ex didnt get past the first mission. Hated the checkpoints and slow special ability timer and when i finally got to the gas thing and couldnt find where to hit "use" and ended up killing the hostages. RQ and stopped playing after about 1 hour.
Portal 2 i play in bursts. Once i spend a while on a puzzle and get stuck i RQ and play it days/weeks later.
Lord of the Rings on the other hand im quite enjoying probably because i havent played a decent action RPG in a very long time. Playing that solo, and getting my regular multiplayer fix with HON. Once i can find a cheap batman key, ill be addicted to that.

I don't think I've clocked/finished a game since I was a teenager. Last game I can recall finishing is Ultima V.
I guess it does depend on finishing a game means for some genres. For example, Soul Calibur I may not have unlocked everything or beaten every character, but I've given it a good run.
As for story-line games, Half-Life was the last game I can remember that I was going to try to finish, but didn't. There was a room with a spiral stair case and a plant in it, and I gave up.

You just don't appreciate the games if you only play them in 15 minutes here and 1 hour there intervals.

Portal 2 is the only game that I've played through multiple times and I was only a few achivements off completion. I don't regard getting 100% of achivements "finishing the game" and have many games that I've completed the story line but don't want to "collect 100 floating space rings" or some horse shit

Same. I love the game. Much better than Oblivion and I enjoyed that. I've only racked up around 25-30 hours or so (guess) simply because I'm busy a lot of the time. Fine by me cause it'll last me well into the future.

I never bother getting 100% achievements these days... Like Rage, Lets go picking flowers for an Achievement... yay... not.
Any game I really get into I have a compusive need to 'Finish' which is usually the story line quest and most (or at least significant) side quests. I don't feel the need to do all the time filler fetch quests though, which add nothing to the game for me.
I was going to give Skyrim a good go (i.e. set aside 4~5 hours) and see if I could play it... but so far I've lacked the motivation to pick it up again.

Skyrim is actually the most completed one that I saw, others like Deus Ex only had less than half of players reach the ending. I would have expected the relationship to work the other way (i.e. new games have less finished so far).
I never aim for 100% in anything (hate collecting trophies etc, Batman is the only one which has semi interested me), but do finish the stories. I wouldn't buy a SP game if I didn't intend to finish it. To me it'd be like starting a book without intending to reach the end :/ (in the last few years I have started a few movies/books and not finished them, simply for lack of time and interest, I guess).

last game i "finished" was fallout3 & although i tried to do all side quests i think there was possibly content i missed.
i am @ 86hours of skyrim, 16/50 achievements unlocked, 32%. i followed the main quest for a while then just started doing my own thing to get new spells & equipment. only 2 sets of scales away from full legendary dragonscale armour :D
i wouldn't put much stock in steam stats... they seem pretty broken from people leaving old accounts vacant & starting new ones & stuff like that.

It took a lonnnng time before I passed Assassins Creed 2 - I played that game for months.
Portal 2 I finished, but didn't get a lot of the achievements. Then I went and bought LA Noire. LA Noire I haven't finished yet, even though I'm right at the end of it. I moved on to AC2 before finishing LA.
Arkham City, not sure, but I'm a little over 10% completion. Attention from that was taken away by ACRev.
Uncharted 2 and Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands I basically played the start then decided I didn't like them.
Zelda: Skyward Sword has been ruined by the release of Mario Kart 7, with it being unexpectedly more entertaining (but they don't have achievements in Steam to speak of).
Assassins Creed Revelations I've pretty much started and not got too far on - I don't see myself finishing it until long after Skyward, and even then I'm expecting I'll probably buy and start playing Skyrim first.
I think part of the problem is that there's been so many high quality games released in the last 12 months - a new one comes along and you're so keen to get in to that, you put aside the last big thing.

Yeah it's definitely been a brutal year for quality games, I didn't have any other games with achievements to look at though (apart from half life 2, which I think they just tacked some on to recently, so that's no good).
While I can easily see tons of side achievements not being completed, the drop off so quickly from "finish the introduction" to "reach an hour or two after the introduction" for most of those seems a pretty huge culling trend.

You can "finish" the main storyline. But in regards to finishing the game itself, no, it has infinite quests, and a soft cap of level 50. That means when you hit 50, you stop gaining perks, but you can level every skill up to 100 if you so please.
I've only ever not finished 2 games this year. Deus Ex and Assassins Creed Brotherhood. I didn't complete Brotherhood because I got up to about 70%, and then had to restart because I forgot to copy my save file over before doing a fresh install of Windows. Deus Ex I could just not get into. Felt crap to me compared to the older series, and was to gimmicky.

Just turn it to master difficulty, bam dragons are ten times harder, and will eat you in one shot.

The real trend i'm finding in games these days is that it's less focused on story and more focused on random achievements and challenges to fill out the game, which ultimately makes the game less enjoyable.. i mean if you rushed the batman story line you could have prob done it in like 4hrs (which is fuck all time for a pure SP game)

Pretty much, 1 breath and then they can do the special attack which is just a fatality attack. Makes the game much more difficult instead of just going toe to toe with a dragon and coming out without thinking about it.

I've intentionally stopped playing WRPG's like the Oblivion/Fallout/Skyrim franchise because of the respective amount of time invested vs the 'enjoyability' that the game returned.
(Not saying that this will be the case for everyone, this is simply my approach)
My big problem w/Oblivion was that there was no consequence to 'ignoring' a quest... if you didn't want to 'go save someone urgently, their life is being threatened' you didn't... revisit it months later, and bang, walk straight in, and save them. For me, that doesn't represent a feature in an RPG style game (admittedly, if all RPG's used very rigid game mechanics about this sort of thing, they wouldn't be as enjoyable as a game type...)
That being said, I've noticed that I need to tone down some of the time I invest in some games...
I know I racked up in the order of 600 hours in BF:BC2 over a 18 month period... and I don't want to do that again (I nearly repeat offended with BF3 racking up 20 hours in just 10 days)..
I did recently enjoy the Dead Space Franchise ~20 hours between 1 and 2, and the story (despite appearing to have been poached quite heavily from Movies like Event Horizon) was quite good, but more importantly, the interactive nature of the game, really engrossed me!
I also quite enjoyed Batman Arkham Asylum. (now just trying to find a 'steam-able' copy for less than $50au (I missed it on steam @ $40... :/ )
TL:DR
Not a surprise that ppl don't finish many of their games... let's face it though, $50-70 on a game 5-10 times a year is still cheaper than a drug addiction...

You can "finish" the main storyline. But in regards to finishing the game itself, no, it has infinite quests
I'm a bit dubious about this whole 'infinite quest' tagline. At some point the game runs out of voice acting content for the standard quests and so the infinite quests will be all just 'run here and harvest me X items' which isn't too exciting.
if you didn't want to 'go save someone urgently, their life is being threatened' you didn't... revisit it months later, and bang, walk straight in, and save them. For me, that doesn't represent a feature in an RPG style game
Dead Rising was like that, and it sucked TBH. Think about what that would entail in a TES game:
You've got Quest A to finish within X amount of time, and it's going to take 3/4 of that time walking and exploring to find the entrance to the cave involved. If you talk to a different NPC in the same area they might give you Quest B with similar time constraints but walking in the opposite direction.
You're obviously only going to get a chance to do one, and if you don't pick one set out immediately it's quest failed for both. The net effect is that players that like to experience all of the content will be extremely cautious about triggering the start of quests and a massively open world to explore becomes a linear grind.
|
This is pretty interesting, especially from a monetisation perspective.
I've only played 40 hours of Skyrim since it came out, and to me that was putting alot of time in! Haven't had time to pay anything else.

My whole 57 minutes I've devoted to BF3 (still level 1) amuses me when I see people (friends list) who had put in 120+ hours in the first two weeks after release and are now way over level 40. Note: jobless, not studying, taxpayer dependent slackers with no hope in life.
That said I've put 67 hours in to Defense Grid. Probably half an hour a day if I play it at all. Working towards Master Strategist achievement now.

I've sunk a fair few hours into that myself, the only thing the game really needs is co-op.
I can safely say I finish about 90% of games I start as I only tend to start games I really want to play. That said, I generally steer clear of games as big a skyrim because I know I don't have the time to see it through. 10-30hrs of gameplay is a nice fit for me.
