Dark Souls: Mini Review

So this came out today and i'm interested to know if anyone is playing or not. In case you happened to miss most of the news/info about this game it's the sequel to the game Demon's Souls which was a PS3 exclusive and notorious for being brutally hard and in my opinion a true sleeper hit. It's out for both 360 and PS3 and I've spent the past 4 hours with the PS3 version and I've yet to reach the top of the Undead Berg which is the 1st and easiest route you can take at the start.

True to the original this game is already driving me a bit nuts and I've died many... many times to even the simplest of undead knights. But it's somewhat reassuring to know I'm not the only one since while you play you can see the shadows of other players near you, and they don't seem to be fairing much better with many blood stains littering the ground.

Online I havn't tried but from what I know you can, just like the original, go into other people's games and kill them in the form of Black Phantoms. There is also Co-op mode for those extra tough areas which I'm led to believe is a very recommended thing later on in the game. Also I think there is a mode where you can enter another person's game with the intention of making it tougher for them, spawning more monsters with higher HP and stats and such. Sounds like a good thing if you have a high level character.

So far from what I've seen the graphics are quite nice though I've only happened to see 2 castles. The original was like this as well until the last few levels where you went into cathedrals and swamps which I expect will happen here. Gameplay is exactly like the original which is a good thing since you shouldn't fix what isn't broken.

Targeting is a bit weird and to be honest a pain since it requires you to push R3 and there doesn't seem to be any way to switch quickly. You need to push R3 to untarget, move the camera toward the enemy you want to select and then hit R3 yet again and hope it picks the right target. Clumsy, awkward and would of been a better idea to use the game pad left and right buttons to move it around.

Controls are great with the 4 main buttons controlling what items are selected in your item wheel. The L and R triggers are for controlling your items you are holding be it 2 swords, 1 bow and 1 sword or just a shield and your magic casting item. Not had an issue with them so that's a good thing.

Unlike the 1st game however magic no longer uses a magic meter and instead is limited to a set amount of casts. Take for example the Pyromage's Fireball spell. You are limited to only 8 casts at first, and when drained you are forced to use a camp fire which I'll get into in a second. The amount of uses can be increased apparently by obtaining another copy of the spell scroll. I'm still working on that.

Camp fires work as checkpoints in this game with them restoring all your health, magic uses and your health flask you carry with you which lets you regenerate HP a set number of times. Using this feature however respawns every monster you have already killed with the exception of bosses. Good for farming souls which are used to level up at the camp fire or buying items from vendors.

There are 10 character classes to pick from which effects what your starting stats and gear is. That's about it since every class regardless of which picked can be just as effective as any other. No class is limited only to what they know at the beginning so a knight can become just as deadly with spells as a pyro which is great since it lets you build the character you want over what the games forces you too. Oh and also when starting a character you get the choice of a special item. This may be health potions, bombs, a master key which opens any basic lock or even some equipment or story enhancing items.

Finally and perhaps the best thing, is the character progression. Levels in this game are treated a bit differently to other RPGs with there being no real experience bar so to speak. Each enemy you kill gives you souls, which is the currency of the world. You use this as I said to buy things or level up your stats, with each stat point advancing you 1 level. The maximum level you can obtain is 145 I think so you are given quite a bit of room for playing about. Each time you increase a stat the cost of further advancement also grows.

Each time you die all your souls are removed too which is fun. Makes death really be a thing to avoid. If you hurry back to the point of your last death however you can recover all the souls you had. Die again on the way back and you lose this chance as it resets the point of death.

All up I'd say if you love a really challenging game and don't mind seeing the words "You Died" constantly i'd say give it a go. Really worth picking up.

I've been playing a fair bit of Demons Souls lately and this sounds pretty true to the first so hopefully I'm up to par :P

Its been easier than I expected from the reviews, playing as a Thief and killed the first 2 bosses without dying. Then managed to roll the wrong way and fall off a cliff :)

Really enjoying the game so far, it reminds me of the old game Severance Blade of Darkness. Really fun combat and really unforgiving, most of the blood stains I've seen so far are of people that gave up the shield for 2 handed wielding.

So far my only really gripe is that I still haven't managed to summon anyone/be summoned. Tho after having a look at the official forums it seems to be a problem with the way the online system works compared to demon souls (which I never played), and lots of complaints about it.

Also it is pretty crazy given the amount of numbers on the character screen that there are still hidden/unexplained stats, like roll speed/stamina recovery is based on you percentage equipped of total equip load.

Where's the mini?

Well, mini as in I just glanced over a lot of the features intead of going further into detail. Anyway. After beating the tutorial level and you get to the shrine, if you want an easy to use, very good weapon...

Spoiler:
take the pathway up and stick to the left to get to the graveyard. Now the monsters here are quite higher stat wise over you so best bet is to sprint around and pick up all the souls. 1 will be a Winged Spear and there is a 2 handed sword you can't use until quite a bit later. This winged spear only needs 13 strength and 15 agility which is something you can get quite easy. On top of having decent attack power you can have your shield up while you attack so it makes even those Black Knights rather easy

I deleted all my old characters and started a new Thief character who is doing well. Planning on sniping that red dragon to see what he is guarding.

so i grabbed demon souls from the video store before, accidently thought it was this

anyway - holy shit cunt game

don't mind it, big price to pay if you die though. I was ready to throw my controller before

i'm just playing the first bit as a soul after i'm assuming by the size of the guy and his cleaver you were meant to die at the end of the tutorial bit.

Demon souls has been the first game to make me rage out in 10 years.

I remember playing it on my wedding day, was feeling seedy drinking corona after popping a few nurofens and sculling a large v.

Died and died, than some cunt joined my game, helped me kill a boss than attacked me. I threw my controller across the room and left in a taxi to get hitched. Haven't gone back to it since.

I get weird cravings to play it all the time though. It's one of those games that on the right day its good to be challenged that much and it makes it soooo soo much rewarding when you get past that incredibly lame and challenging moment.

I wan't to play demon souls but so many good games are out atm that i don't want to spend my time getting cranky.

If you are nimble enough and can dodge well it's possible to kill him and you get a special soul for it which you can either break for a ton of souls or use it to upgrade a weapon. Not easy though.

No you only get 1 shot with him and I think you even get an achievement for it. He appears later on in the game even if you do manage to kill him but you miss the early reward.

the tutorial is pretty much supposed to kill you at that boss. if you know what you are doing you can kill him for a reward, but if its your first time just expect to die

i think i'm going to start again i fucked up the first area after i killed the canturion, instead of getting the fuck out of there while i had been brought back alive for killing him i tried to keep going on and back track along that wall to where i had been killed before to get my souls

died at the end of that wall and was basically left with nothing from the first area apart from the souls i collected in my inventory

man this game is weird, it really brings out the masochist in you

Darksouls is not for casual gamers, casual gamers might find the learning curve too steep for their liking, but as you get used to the unique combat system and gameplay, you will not be able to let your controllers free from your clutching hands

1 thing I didn't touch on during my original post was something I actually hadn't encountered yet. Covenants. Think of them like the guilds of oblivion only without the quests. When you join one you gain access to their spells, items and even some special features unique to those covenants.

I found a Chaos covenant way, way down inside the mountain and holy crap is it awesome. Simply joining them gave me a Chaos Fireball spell which is a very large AoE fireball with it's own special effect and also when the ball explodes, it leaves behind lava pools which burn for a few seconds. The higher your rating with the Coven, the larger the pools are that spawn.

After some rather impressive boss battles and 1 rage inducing session involving perhaps the darkest, most precarious shanty village i've ever come across in an rpg action game, I managed to get into a place i'm perhaps not ment to go and triggered a boss battle. Great, here I am stuck in a boss fight when I had 15k souls. Dodged his first attack, swiped at his arm with my dragon sword and got a sinking feeling when I saw his hp only move a slither and see i'm doing 50 damage a hit. I dodge his second attack and again attack him with a combo only to have him explode and me gain credit for the kill. WTF? This happened on the bridge with the dragon too. Bug perhaps? Anyway I got another 10,000 souls for that glitch kill and also was rewarded with an armor set that looks exactly like a nazghul from LoTR movies.

While some places are almost cruel with how hard they are, in whole i've found this a bit more forgiving than Demon's Souls. For starters when you die you don't lose 1/2 your hp, you just drop your souls and need to reclaim them. When you do want to go human to summon friends and such it's entirely up to you when it happens so if you stay undead the whole game you will never get invaded.

Though i've yet to go into any advanced areas and i've heard the areas beyond the graveyard will make you cry.

1 great thing about Dark Souls is the sheer scale of the world you are in. Sure it's not a free roam game but so much of the world is open to you from the get go. Go up the top of the Undead City and look down into the houses and some of the areas below and you can actually walk down there without any load screens. So many places are just so grand in scale and yet you can go mostly anywhere there is something pretty to look at. I've been playing multiple characters but i've racked up about 30 - 40 hours so far across them. Currently playing a Level 35ish bandit with +3 divine winged spear and +2 dragon shield with nazghul armor.

Oh I was exploding in Deeproot Basin and totally shit myself when I came across a colossal 5 headed hydra who started attacking me. Luckly I got out alive and ran into what I thought was a safe tower only to be 1 shot by a mini boss in there.

I think everyones overstating how hard this game is, cleared everything I've found up until Sen's Fortress and haven't had any issues.

Most of the bosses have dropped first try, with the notable exception of the Capra Demon and its super close quarter area. The hydra was probably the easiest of the boss fights so far, looked really imposing tho :)

So far my favourite fight has to be the Great Wolf Sif, very cool looking and pretty tight timing required for dodging. Also nice of him to drop 3 soul levels worth of souls :D

I'd agree with and the Hydra fight is pretty easy after you get close, those first 2 or so minutes of getting close can be a brutal of those water ball AoE attacks connect.

My first boss death have been with the Gaping Dragon and it's hidden mage who 1-shot me from behind since, well, he was hidden.

I haven't had to deal with getting all the way to a boss and dying and having no option but to start the level again yet.

Do you crack it? Throw control? Extremely patient and just start again?

how do you guys deal with dying?

I just get pissed off and start swearing to myself.

I haven't had to deal with getting all the way to a boss and dying and having no option but to start the level again yet.

Wait until you start getting into Sen's Fortress/Anor Londo. The mobs there are not only tough but rather cheap if you ask me. The boss of Sen's Fortress was driving me mad. I was 1 hit away from killing him and got over confident, he picked me up and threw me off the tower like a stone. Twice this happened.

Start to run into those black knights regularly and i'm clearing the floor with them something fierce. +5 magic winged spear for long range poking and just crafted my first real "bosses soul weapon" that being Spoiler:
Queeleags Soul + a +10 curved weapon/katana. I went Curved route and got a brutal sword which has all the best parts of the falchion I used as well as a kick ass fire trail when I swing the weapon. Hits sets things on fire. Something like 80 melee damage and 180 fire damage and it's only +2

Now I got that i'm heading into Londo Ruins to explore since i've been afraid of that area until now. I've explored a few of the covenants and found that the only REAL reason to pick up the gravelord one is to get the miracle spell and greatsword which is insane. I think you only need like 16 str and 10 dex to use it and yet it does like 250 damage, 286 with a +1 on it. But yeah the main draw for that seems to be broken with the "invade other people's worlds" thing not working or something. I'm trying for the darkwrath one right now though.

EDIT - Also how far have you gotten in?

yep that's the worst

when you get the shits and get slopping making your way back to where you died because you want to get back there ASAP and then die again to some rnadom cunt *throw controller*

DM: as mentioned i was just playing demon's souls on the weekend, i made my way through and killed the phalax. then started on the second section along that wall where the red dragon is, i really wanted to kill the dragon and get it's soul so i got to the first tower and got the wand and went and learned soul arrow but it's pretty tricky and a really long winded process to kill him so i learned and was like whatev and kept going in the tunnel to make it to the second tower where i fucking walked out just too far waiting to time my run with the dragon and got burned by the CUNT this was probably more frustrating than anything. then got killed by the dogs in the tunnel being sloppy and put the game down.

game has to go back today so yeah, going to find a cheap copy of dark souls

Either I just encountered the most epic bug, or the Forest Covenant is the bee's knees. I was thinking about trying to tackle the boss in the forest and was standing at his entrance. I had joined the forest guys in order to see what they were like. I put the ring on, which summons you as a black phantom into any persons world who enters the last area of the forest, and started to load. I had been in their world literally only 1 second before I got a "you defeated" message, got 1 titanite chunk and was given, 700,000 souls!. I fucking shit you not. I guess you are given the souls of the person you kill but jesus christ. Now i'm Lv 80 something with 50 str and hoping I get summoned again so I can boost my endurance above 20.

TL;DR - got 700,000 souls for being in forest covenant and doing nothing.

It is supposed to offer co-op but from what i've read it's hard to get going. This game is just begging and crying out for a co-op mode where you can invite some friends with a lobby. Make the enemies scale like they did in diablo so 4 people = super hard. Right now the co-op works as I invaded someones game who had a friend with him (great use of a red orb there) and got annihilated. Think it's just a matter of going to the same spot with 1 of you being human, and inviting the other who puts his mark down. Can't really test as I have no one on my friends list (forever alone).

Anyway I managed to progress a bit today by Spoiler:
killing Great grey wolf sif, getting his ring and proceeding to kill the 4 kings. They were the hardest bosses i've had to fight so far and only managed to because I had a specific weapon I found while out and about. Joined the Darkwraith covenent. I'm starting a hardcore spellcaster. Getting absolute minimum dex and str required to wield my prefered weapons and then going hp, stam and int. Just killed bell tower guards with a friendly player as well as an npc phantom. Bosses are so epic with people

But yeah there are a few things that need to be fixed with this game and I hope From Software keep updating it.

To join someone elses game, at least in dark souls as I forget what to do in demon, is talk to the knight guy just before the run on the dragon infested bridge and he gives you an item which puts your mark on the ground. Other players who see this can summon you if they are human.

Which leads me to summoning people. You need to have at least 1 humanity and select "reverse hollowing" at a bonfire and now you're human and can summon people but also will be invaded at times. They would of improved this game a lot by not having the human/hollow system and just force people to play online at all times with anyone being able to drop in/invade at will.

Invading is just like summoning only you need Red Cracked Orbs or something like that. Need to be human and just use it like a normal item. Certain covenents have items you can use forever without having to buy the orbs for like 3k souls each.

In Demon Souls you use blue eye stones to co-op, Black eye stones to invade as soul form against a body form player and Red eye stone to basically slip in to someones game without them knowing (other than that it's essentially the same as a black eye one)

I'm playing a sorcerer right now actually. Lv 16 or so. Melee is fun yeah but there are times, specifically in boss fights, where magic is a much faster route IMO. Best advice I can give is to get Heavy Soul Arrow and even another Soul Arrow spell from Spoiler:
new londo ruins from the guy on the stairs near the zombie laying with his head on his shoulder in the very first area
as that gives you 60 SA charges and 12 heavy ones. This should do you well for bosses. For some it totally trivializes the fights making them a walk in the park. Others you may need to summon or be summoned simply so the boss doesn't always target you and you get some free space.

1 tip I can give for most melee though to ignore the parry function. It's good at the beginning but soon as you can attack with your shield up it's use goes down I found as it can quickly lead to you being killed if you time it wrong. When an enemy hits your shield you get a second to poke it anyway so that's usually your time to strike. Just don't drain your entire bar in 1 combo as that will lead to you being really hurt from reprisals. This is where a large stamina bar comes in handy to block all those attacks. Hell, once you get a spear and know how to bait moves out of black knights even those guys can be taken out the moment you first encounter them.

As for normal enemies I personally love spears as you can attack with your shield up so get either that or a rapier type weapon which acts the same. Makes things a bit safer. Make sure you pick up a shield that has 100% physical reduction though as that really makes those weapons shine. If your lucky 1 of the armed skeletons with spears/swords will drop 1 for you.

Oh, yeah that place. That isn't an area you should go until you are fairly far into the game. They drop no souls, and respawn unless you either kill them with a Divine weapon or kill the necromancers scattered around, in which case they will remain dead after you kill them next. I didn't go in there until I was level 40+ no wonder your having trouble.

The Gargoyle bosses I actually find easier when solo. If all else fails, go get the white soapstone from the NPC on dragon guarded bridge. Get 1 humanity and reverse the hollowing at a bonfire and then you can summon the NPC at the boss portal. This way you don't have to wait for someone else and the NPCs are actually much MUCH tougher than an ally. All I can say besides that is keep your shield up at all times but back way up when you need to regen your bar. Watch out for his overhead smash though. That thing just destroys your stamina if blocked so it's better to dodge that. If you have a weapon that slashes, aim for the tail when gargoyle #1 start attacking you and you get behind them. Cutting it off removes 2 of the attacks he use, and gives you an item to boot.

My first serious character in this game was a Pyromancer. Fireball is a great help for lots of minibosses. I prefer magic/bows over melee in every fantasy type game anyway though so I might be bias. Getting the Chaos covenant just boosts the pyro power even more. I like sorcerers though the most as you get access to pyro abilities later on than sorcerer spells so it works better IMO.

yeah i started a pyro just did the tutorial bit, beat that big prick falling on him with an axe to the face worked well. Just did the first little section after the tut for a look around to get the feel of things.

SO MANY QUESTIONS

the'humanity' i pick up near the bonfire, i'm guessing that brings me back to living dimension... So what is hollowing/reversing hollowing?

When you start off you are undead. Reverse Hollowing is done at a bonfire, costs 1 humanity (picked up as items/killing bosses/killing lots of monsters) and turns you human. Humanity items are just like the souls you can break, being 1 use items. Being human lets you access all online features such as being able to summon people, invading worlds, being invaded and so on.

There are certain things that only happen when you are a human in the story too such as NPC/mobs spawning which give you items and souls. When you are undead you can only be summoned by someone who is human. Unless you want a really tough time, avoid the graveyard/new londo ruins (though the very first area is safe and has some cool items/an npc) as they are advanced places which can and will destroy you.

hollowing is being dead basically, reverse hollowing is becoming human form. save up your humanity points so more items drop, and you build up resistances too.
use a humanity point when you need help with a boss, youll see other players marks on the ground near the fog.

i just did that with the gargoyle boss, 2 people helped. much better.

Im finding farming souls via placing a mark while hallowed, then helping people with bosses & mobs is a risk free way of doing it.

Also, desperately need a new weapon, these people are doing shitloads of damage, and im in the forest area doing no more than 18 dmg per hit with my mace.

after the belltower, it isn't ideal to go forest. That area is for later. On the dragon bridge there is a locked door across from the one you first enter after killing the miniboss on the wall. Go in there, bend over and get ready for some serious infuriation. Between the Capra Demon and blighttown shanty village you will be rage filled in no time.

Also spoiler on some strong weapons/armor early in the game and tips for starting. Avoid if you don't want to know.
Spoiler:
When you select the gift at the start of the game, it's best to take the master key unless you are a thief. It lets you unlock a lot of things and can get some cool shit. When you have the key, the first thing you should do is spend as many souls as you can for leveling up or buying new spells. You are about to die so don't want them to go to waste. Spend them and go into New Londo Ruins. There are some souls in here you can pick up such as an Estoc rapier. There is a guy in this beginning area who will sell you sorcerer spells/weapons.

Anyway there is a 2nd door you can go in at the start which will lead you to a locked door. Open it with the master key and grab the soul on the other side of the door you open. Go across the bridge and go left which leads toward a bridge and then a sleeping dragon. He wont wake up unless you go near his head so run fast as you can and pick up both souls. If you can dodge his AoE, great. But you will die 99.9% of the time. These items are not only a 100% physical and 75% fire shield which needs only like 10 str, but also a divine shortsword which is quite strong against demons. Needs 10 str, 10 agi and 14 faith.

Fast forward to the dragon bridge and the shortcut you can make with the ladder. If you have a bow and about 40 odd arrows you can snipe his tail which grants you a sword. The spot is easy to find. Just walk right instead of left when walking underneath the bridge and you see his tail. Whip out your bow and fire away. The sword he drops has 200 attack, needs 16 str and 10 agi (but bows need 12+) and will last you well into the game making things much eaiser. Don't try shooting the dragon as you wont kill him. For that you need to kill a black knight which at this level even with those 2 swords is extremely hard unless you know his attacks and how to bait out certain ones you can counter.

Lastly and perhaps the best item to get is in the belltower. When you go upstairs and clear our all the zombies there is a path which a knight guards at the very end. Kill him and then knock down the clearly obvious door. Upstairs there is a guy trapped behind a door you can open with the master key. He won't reward you now but go back to the firelink shrine starter and downstairs you will see him. He gives you a medal. Now 2 things about this guy. If you leave him he will kill the mute girl behind bars, take her soul and you can then go kill him much later to return her soul and get his armor. On the other hand if you kill him now (either spells or make him leap off the edge like a dick) you will get some souls and a brutal ring which increases HP, Stam, and total weight load. However the ring will shatter when you take it off so I never take it off. Brilliant item

Keep the yellow boss souls. Sure they break for a good chunk each time but each boss soul can be used to make 1 of 2 unique items for each soul. Theres about 9 souls all up. As for that Titanite demon guy they hate lightning and can be sniped with arrows or spells. Melee is a bitch to kill them with.

lost count how many hours ive played this game today, but i just killed the gaping dragon and headed further down all these ladders, and then i get invaded by some cunt.
guess what, he's decked out in gear, and i can barely touch him even with my drake sword. he's just playing around with me, i got no choice but to be his ball of twine, so he kills me instantly and i respawn back at the fucking beginning of the whole game, aaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhh
i used the kindle near that area and it didnt respawn me there for some reason. do i need to actually rest there for it to take effect?
anyway, after some VERY close calls with rats on the way b ack to my body, i got my 30,000 souls back, fuck i was sweating at the fear of losing all those souls.

The Slough and Ornstein fight was pretty cool, a step up from the other bosses so far in the game. I did it the easy way tho, which was dumb cause I wanted Ornstein s soul to make the dragonslayer spear with :(

I think the most annoying thing I've seen so far is the Fog Ring, which makes you untargetable in pvp. Annoying enough that I'm probably going to have to change from spear to halberd just for a wide arc attack.

THe poison fog spell is awesome tho :)

woah woah woah ease up turbo

so i'm at the very first bonfire after the tutorial bit in the nice green area

all i've done so far was go up the stairs towards this bridge and kill the guys there went onto the bridge and in the door to the left is a giant ass rat to the right down the end is a gate that doesn't open from that side and i keep going and it leads me into a second area that i can't remember the name

from that first bonfire, where are these places you're talking about ie. new londo ruins, dragon bridge and belltower

i did notice there is a set of stairs through the ruins near that bonfire but i didn't investigate, just headed past the well where you find the humanity item and towards the bridge

New Londo Ruins - To the left of the first NPC you see when going into the firelink shrine (very VERY first area after tutorial). There is a set of stairs that lead down to another flat area which is home to a mute women in a jail type thing. To the left of HER is a stair case again which leads you down into a room with a pressure switch on an elevator. Going down that will get you into New Londo. As I've said there are some items you can pick up in the safe area at the start but ghosts will wreck your shit if you go too far in.

Dragon Bridge - Not a real area but just what I call it. When you go up (as you have been) and into the castle you will run into a section where like in the original, a red dragon is guarding a bridge.

Bell tower - Again not a real area. This is the very top of the castle and houses your first objective. Also an achievement for getting here.

Yeah I took the ring at first too and stood there going "god damn liars, don't replenish shit". You can find a master key in the game yeah but it's not till later. I just find the key to be the best bonus as you get 2 good items straight away and the shield will last a very long time.

Pave, one of the easier classes to play as is Royalty. You start off with Soul Arrow which is a godsend early on.

Also dont munch those Demon souls you get from the bosses. You can exchange them for spells and weapon upgrades down the track.

Im stuck in second level of Shrine of Storms. I would love to describe this level using the language it deserves, however, i am at work and i think the filter may block it.....

If you plan on using the dragon sword mostly go 16 str and 12 dex.
If you want to use that divine sword (strong against demons and undead) then you need 10 str, 10 agi and 14 faith.

After that i'd pump endurance, attunement, intelligence and HP. Maybe in that order too. While int makes your spells stronger it's mostly used to just meet requirements for spells when soloing unless you want your caster to be death walking which case you should take real high levels of it. Endurance gives you more stamina, equip load (very good), bleed and poison resist. Attunement gives you more spell slots to use so this is good too.

If you equip say 2 fireball spells, you double the amount of charges so this is why attunement is good.

EDIT - Yeah as rza says don't break the yellow boss souls. They are named too like Soul of Queeleg and so forth. They are used to make weapons and you only get 1 of them per game.

Oh that still exists in this game only in a much worse fashion. in the game there are enemies that Curse you. Curse removed 1/2 your current HP and stacks. So get cursed again and you are down to 1/4 hp. Get cursed again and you down to 1/8. Curse can be removed by an NPC or a special item bought from a vendor for 6000 souls.

Nah it just lets you talk to the leader of the covenant and she tells you... something not sure. To do with the storyline. Without it you just get a "..." message from her.

not sure what weapon to upgrade after the drake sword is past its usefulness

Drake Sword should last you a long time but if you want a new weapon I would recommend upgrading a falchion if you want another sword, or a spear. Falchions have great attacks (the r2 strong is great and the forward+r1 attack is an amazing slash and roll away). Spears just let you poke at a distance with your shield up.

Im still using a winged spear +10/lightning spear +5, most of the bosses in this game are more about knowing the attacks/telegraphing/timing than the raw damage output

Although the same doesn't hold true for pvp :P

The crystal sword greatsword from the vendor outside the Gaping Dragon is a good temporary weapon, tho the Drake Sword and the Black Knight sword (if your knights dropped on) are pretty awesome weapons right up till late (from what I've seen so far).

Did you get the tail from the Gaping Dragon? Thats a huge damage weapon, tho requires a pretty hefty strength to use it.

I think it more comes down to stats for later weapons, the boss weapons are mostly awesome, tho you can't make those till you get to the smith in Anon Londo

and there is this big fucking wendigo thing up the top on the wall that i have no idea at all about he just snaps me straight up...

Black Knight tips: - avoid all the attacks you can. these buggers will drain massive chunks of stamina from you.
- the safest attacks to get a few hits in are when he thrusts the sword directly at you or if he tries to shield bash you. Avoiding/blocking these can lead to a backstab if your fast enough.
- his overhead smash is usually unblockable and nearly a 1 hit kill for most players unless lucky.

went down first and their is this little tubby dude that looks like he's made of iron and i do about 20 damage to him and he kills me in 1 go just about

If it's the guy i'm thinking of, yes he is a 1 hit kill even for my lv 84 character. he is a very very high level monster. I found his armor later on in the game and it turns you into a walking tank.

there is this big fucking wendigo thing up the top on the wall that i have no idea at all about he just snaps me straight up

When you enter the white gate, to the right hand side beside the stairs is a ladder. climb it, kill the 2 skeletons up there and get ready to run back. walk forward on the wall until the demon appears on the tower and sprint back as fast as you can to it. Go up and he will look up at you for a bit. Don't think you are safe here as the fucker can climb up and own you. Just leap off and do a plunging attack (r1 when falling) to do like 700 damage with that divine sword. Run away toward the tower he jumped off in the beginning and wait for him. Do your best to dodge his sweeping attack and then sprint toward the ladder again. This may take awhile to get right but do another plunging attack and then tadah! dead demon.

There is an area later where there are 7 or 8 of these guys in a group together guarding a soul. I have no idea what it is but fuck me it must be powerful.

Make sure you get the item from that NPC dude. Just say yes to everything he says. If you run forward across the bridge really fast the dragon SHOULD attack you once (it's best to try running when he isn't there yet) taking off most of your life. You have to sprint for the stairs to the right and go down them. You should have just enough time to make it since he will kill the skeletons for you. Once in there you can go down some stairs and kick down a shortcut and rest at the bonfire. This can be your first farming point too. Run up the stairs, cause the dragon to kill the skeletons, run back to the bonfire and reset. 300 souls per time. Nothing great but fast.

They jump on your head and peck your eyes out killing you instantly and they resist the lightning spear i'm using. Not good but lucky I killed a titanite demon (guys without heads and massive spears) and actually got his spear as a drop. Like 120 attack and 140 magic attack and R2 does his jump attack which is awesome. This seems like it will take awhile to get out of since you can't leave once you come in without killing the final boss.

jesus dm, how much time do you have to play this game?

you must be better at it than i am because i've spent far more time than i normally would play just on 1 character

Just found out there is a 380 odd page, hardcover dark souls guide. Bad point is it's sold out pretty much everywhere I look so just ordered from amazon for their next shipment of them.

haha that's full on, the 2 wiki's i've been using are only partially finished obviously because the game's so new

so i spent most of the time i played today dicking around in that forest area before i realised i wasn't heading to the depths (and i was no match for those stone knignts) worked out where i had to go to get to the capra demon also stopped in and handed that black knight his own ass.

Worked out all the mad short cuts back to the bonfires and went into the capra demon who killed me, then i stopped because the rugby league was about to start

Both the Capra Demon and Minotar guy are normal enemies in the Demon Ruins. I have no clue what treasure they are guarding but i'm going to take a crack at it tonight and see whats up as it must be good. Will report back! Also fuck the boss in Anor Londo. Shits hard as hell as you need to fight 2 guys at once and killing one heals the other fully, makes him grow in size and gain attacks. Also changes what soul you get as a reward.

EDIT - Managed to forge a unique scythe and it's rather brutal when it hits. every 3rd attack in a combo does 200 - 300 unblockable bleed damage but every attack you do raises YOUR bleed meter by 2 notches so can only use it about 6 or 7 times before you need to switch. Good for PVPing though. Oh and also I managed to piss off all by 2 covenants so I need to pay 110,000 souls to be good with them again. Fucking darkmoon one is stupid. I accepted their covenant and then walked through the white portal directly in front of me. However doing this not only breaks the covenant with them for the entire game (I think) but starts a boss fight which the chick 1 shot me with an attack I blocked.

The minatour demons guard the chaos ember
The capra demons guard the way to the next bonfire, and the next mini boss :)

At the moment I'm using the crystal shield (butterfly soul) and a +10 halberd, the alt attack of the shield is doing 720 damage :) 1 shotting capra demons :D

There is actually an NPC invader in blighttown, I got invaded and killed her and she's becomes an orange npc summon for the boss fight

The darkmoon NPC conversation prior to the door does tell you no one can set foot in this crypt :P

Is there any bad side to dying as a human (ala world tendency in demon's souls?) If so is there a way to die so that it doesn't impact anything (ala suicide in the nexus?)

no real problem as dying human, aside from needing to spend 1 humanity to return to being human.

I try to largely play as human, theres a few human only events (npc invaders that turn into summonable npc allies for bosses etc..), and with a 2-3 humanity a lot more boss/special drops can occur. Also quite nice if there happens to be some soul signs on the group and manage to get someone to help with a boss.
Of course you also run the risk of being invaded, the room outside of the Anon Londo twin boss is a favourite place for invaders to hang around.

There is one amusing side effect from dying, if you die with a large humanity/souls theres a chance of vagrant souls spawning in other peoples games in the area you died in.

I made yet another character. this time a Wanderer and plan on taking him as a bow/dex sword build with little to no spells. So far he is doing well and i've just cleared out the belltower. On the way I managed to kill that first black knight you meet and his sword dropped. Yey!. I finally got the stats to equip it and god damn do the R2 attacks pack a punch! While they take a long time to actually come out, if they connect they send every enemy i've encountered so far ragdolling along the floor. Very wide arc of attacks on normal 1h attacks too so i'll see how this fairs against the Capra Demon.

the room outside of the Anon Londo twin boss is a favourite place for invaders to hang around

I was outside there when a guy invaded me. He couldn't kill me even with that gargoyle on my arse so he ran off and hid behind enemies. When I lured them out and killed them he STILL couldn't kill me so he moved to the 2 giants near the main entrance door. I changed the bridge direction (lol), cleared out the painting room and then rolled off the side of the building to get out of the area lock down. Pansy arse wimp. If you invade someone don't just puss out and hide, die if you can't beat them.

is that the number up the top left corner in the grey circle? when i use a humanity that number increases to 1, i think if i the reverse hollow it and become human that numbers goes back to 0

i play most of the game hollow because i die a lot basically so 2 questions from this:

1) so is there a benfit of using humanities and having that number higher even if i'm hollow ?

2) if i die with say 2 or 3 humanities used and sitting there in that number, do they go when i die along with my souls ?

The number in the top corner will always drop with your souls when you die, doesnt't matter if your human or hollow.

To turn human you only consume 1 humanity, so if you have 3 grey, you'll have 2 humanity and be human.

The main advantage is increased drops, some human only events, increased resistance to curse, and a increase damage output. All of those scale with the amount of humanity you have.
Being human also lets you kindle the flames (costs 1 humanity) to give more estus flasks, by default you can kindle fires once to give 10 flasks, after finding the kindling rites you can kindle again, giving 15 flasks.

Having a high humanity when hollow does nothing besides risks losing them when you die.

If you need more humanity a good place to farm them is the 3 rats down the ladder from the bonfire below the red dragon in undead burg, rats seem to be the most frequent droppers of humanity :)

Looks like they're patching some of the more annoying pvp items

Notes from the japanese dark souls site (google translated)
[Fix] case are the main improvements
- "Shield" magic "magic shield" strong effects, effective and continuous use of the magic bug shield not have received, the trigger delay of magic bug "Ring of the Mist" Review of non-locking effect - "History of gentle peace" ※ improvement and coordination of details for the item matching conditions at the time of trouble reading the map review of the effect of switching will be announced at a later date.

So it looks like the no lock on ability of the Ring of Fog is getting tweak, along with Tranquil Path miracle (huge movement impairing spell)

Played my sorc some more tonight and she's made quite a bit of progress. I managed to kill the boss behind the darkmoon door you're not supposed to go in. Took me over an hour and about 40 tries but I did it!. Then leveled my pyro flame glove up to +15 and converted it to a 2nd level glove so it's really +16 at the moment. All I can say is upgrade that bitch as high as you can. my weakest fireball is hitting monsters for over 250 damage a cast. Chaos Fireball is doing around 700 - 800 which is just bloody brutal.

Cleared out Demon Ruins and found a fire, and chaos ember down there but the way forward is blocked by a yellow fog door I can't open yet so went back up and explored Ash Lake a bit but died. Bugger going back down there all that way so I think i'll try and kill the Anor Londo boss again now.

The golden fog will vanish once you beat the twin bosses in Anon Londo :)

That gold fog hides 2 more boss fights that block the way to another area, which is full of essentially asylum demon like standard mobs....

The first boss fight after the gold fog does drop a nice sorc's catalyst tho

Yeah for sure pave. I never knew how powerful that thing would get. I'm not sure if you can upgrade your sorc catalyst but if you can i'll do that as well. Mind you upgrading it isn't cheap. The first 5 - 10 levels are sort of cheap (I did +2 to +11 with 40k souls) but after that they start costing between 15k and 22k souls per level but the stats on the glove go from an E scale ranking on int up to S which I believe is the highest you can get. Doesn't hurt I have 29 int either.

man i don't think i've had more than 6k of souls at any one time, granted i have been using them to buy levels mostly when i get the chance to stay competitive as i move further

suppose i haven't really got that far yet

just can't see myself having 40k of souls at any one time

If you kill the boss behind the darkmoon covenant fog door you get 40k souls, her special soul, an armor set and a spell. However when I went to upgrade the pyromancer had buggered off so I had to make my way right down into the chaos covenant room and along the way gathered up another 8k souls. There is a hidden pyromancer trainer down there that sells very strong spells but only shows up (she can show up without this though) if you have a +10 pyro glove.

It's so worth all the hastle though when you see the damage. Fireball hitting for 250 - 300. Combustion doing about the same. Great Combustion doing 350 - 400, Chaos Fireball doing anything from 500 - 800 and that's with 0 humanity. Oh and this was the damage when using it against the demons in Demon Ruins so it's even stronger on others. Makes pyro a sledgehammer when doing bosses and can annihilate them without any real threat. Even the wolf Sif was easy peasy, so much so I helped 3 people in a row to clear out their boss and then did mine so got like another 60k souls through that.

That bonfire is also a warp location, which is pretty handy when you have the ability :)

+10 for a new vendor hey? I better upgrade it
I mainly only have the pyro flame equipped for emergencies when I get invaded by people with the Fog Ring, at lesat I can spew poison mist everywhere and wait for them to die that way :)

Yeah she appears in the swamp of blighttown near the entrance to queleags mound. When you are near the waterfall and it's building/shortcut to firelink, she spawns at the first giant stone pillar to the right. I dunno it's hard to describe but she is dressed in gold hemmed robes and sitting down.

One thing thats really annoying with the online system, I think I've over leveled from exploring, and now I cant get any white/red/black phantoms due to the annoying +-10% requirement.

1 thing I don't like about this game is being rewarded for playing as human. I always want to be human so I can be invaded and so on but shit... I shouldn't have to farm hundreds of humanity items just so I can do it. I die a lot and there should be an option or at least some type of NPC that I can pay to always revive me as human no matter what. Being undead sucks but I only play like that because i'm saving all my humanity for the chaos covenant.

I was REALLY hanging out for this game since playing through and loving Demon's souls. From the time i have spent ingame currently, i love every bit of it. It's a game that changes the way you approach other game, and has a lot more depth to it than what is visible from the surface. Honestly, i would almost say it's been one of the best games of the year.

The one let down has been the PvP, but that is to be addressed in the patch thats currently on its way removing the lock on advantage of the fog ring, and the STUPID damage of elemental weapons.

Oh, and so you know, you can switch targets by a quick flick of the R3 stick.
