I'm so excited for AR, awesome video, especially like how it cuts into the table.
I've always wondered if it's possible to do it on a very large scale with goggles, in a arena similar to Laserforce but with blank surfaces that could be used to recreate different FPS games.
This is actually really clever marketing tool for Nintendo. Essentially it's looks awesome and is the easiest way to go and wow your friends when you rock up with one. Best marketing tool is to let the people who bought one go out and sell it to others with these cool little tech demo's.
Definitely would suck if you did lose the cards but it'll be interesting to see if 3rd parties just go and start releasing their own cards without permission from Nintendo, can't imagine Nintendo could do anything about it..... I'm looking at you porn industry, get crackin.
I want to know if the Big N will be releasing more AR cards over the course of the 3ds' life? I can't imagine they would, but I'm definately interested to see what other ideas they have.
Put that card down on a hot woman's body. Now that would look freaky distorting it all.
Funny you should mention naked women. Japan has already released 1 of those a year or 2 ago. It was a little maid which would sweep around your desk. and you used a webcam to view her on your pc. It also came with a little hand tool and depending on where you poked her she would react and be scared and stuff.
Also FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU- just when I say i'm not being suckered into buying a 3ds they come and do something brilliant like this. DAMN YOU NINTENDO *raise fist*
Well I was going to preorder one of these things right now... until I saw the launch titles. Holy shit what a sad excuse of a launch. Not a single game i'm even remotely interested in. Guess I could always buy it to play my DSi games on but pfft, rather keep the $360 it'd cost and put that toward my new system.
Is there anything special about the cards? Like could you just color photocopy them and keep them as back-ups?
Would be an interesting test. I've got one preordered so maybe I can give it a whirl. I suspect there's some special gloss or reflective surface on the card that allows the 3ds camera to pick it up though.
I'm quite certain they're just like QR codes, so you can copy them. VW and the Star Trek movie website had a AR feature on their website where you simply printed out a black and white picture and, using your webcam, would allow you to hold up and interact with a Mini Cooper or USS Enterprise. I got lazy and used my iPhone instead and it worked fine! I'd imagine an iPad would work too!
I've seen AR stuff before but that last game, where it distorts the terrain, blew me away! Nintendo, shut up and take my money!
Yeah can definitely run standard DS games on it, there's only a handful of games that didn't work going from the DS(Lite) to the DSi. One of them being Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber which was actually a really good game.

$298 from JB HI FI. I've been reading reviews, and the 3D is a nice feature, but it's merely a gimmick. But they're saying it's well worth the price tag with the updated hardware that it is offering. Also, the titles being announced sound so damn awesome. Mario 3D, Zelda 3D, Dragon Quest 3 3D and more. Hell, I didn't really care about the starter games, as I have Pokemon Black for my starter.
While those do interest me, none are launch titles. They'll get my money when they get some decent games. For the time being I got my DSi XL with pokemon white.
I actually played a 3DS last weekend, went to the Top Gear Live show here in Melbourne (which was awesome too), and Nintendo had a big 3DS setup in the exhibition hall. I was kinda half interested in 3DS, but had written it off as a bit of a gimmick, but holy SHIT the 3d is really, really, really awesome. I was blown away, so much cooler than I was expecting.
I played some of those AR games, pretty simplistic, but a very very cool way to show off the system. Had one where a giant dragon came up out of the table, and you had to aim the ds around to like shoot up into its open mouth, and shoot underneath it and stuff, and the whole time its this huge 3d dragon popping out of the screen at you, its just plain cool, made me want to buy one right there on the spot.
Played some of street fighter 4 as well, and even though I aleady have it on 360, I'd probably get it on 3ds as well, it was heaps fun and looked awesome in 3D. I was also impressed how good the graphics were, it looked almost as good as the console versions, the 3ds must be packing a lot more power under the hood than the DS does.
dunno i just guess when will i have the time to use it, can't really use it on the bus nor would i since i use it for study time.. wouldn't use it at home since if i'd have my pc etc
I guess if i gave it a shot things might seem dif, but that requires someone with it :D
I can see my uses for a 3DS on the train to and from Gold Coast, at my girlfriends who currently doesn't have a PC, and during lecture breaks or in boring lectures.
I've printed the AR cards from a standard printer, printed an A4 size of the card works a treat lol.
The AR features could be so powerful if it gets put to good use imagine a Yugioh trading card game where the monsters actually jump out and fight each other on the table 0_0!

I've got a app on my desire hd that supplements the AR cards, works awesome with friends holding it up on their face :D
That Face Raiders game is a disturbing use of AR as well. Apart from sounding like the title of a porn movie, its just disturbing what it does with people's faces. I ended up these pink flying alien balls with my face on them, flying at the screen trying to kiss me. Its just all sorts of wrong.

Yeah I got a few of my mates faces in the system now, the game is awesome at showing off how powerful this AR could be when done properly.

Attack of the 50 ft Miihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1wU7iBHXz0I keep cheating when I play the AR games. Rather than walking around the card, I just spin it in place to where it needs to be. Much easier :D
