This is so funny, rhis just proves how much Xbox are forcing Sony to move quickly and cut corners ....PSX Sheds Features to Gain Speed....Sony have decided that they need to release their PSX console earlier than they first anticipated, in order to fully capitalize on the holiday season sales. The Japanese electronics giant has therefore announced that the PSX will become available in Japan on December 12, one day earlier than expected.

It appears however, that Sony's technological wonder will have to sacrifice some of the features that the company had previously announced. The rush to get it ready on time and the apparent production difficulties raised have led Sony to issue a list with the revised PSX features. The changes on that list are as follows :

HDD to DVD dubbing has downgraded from 24x to 12x speed.

- CD-R playback will not be supported.

- DVD+RW playback will not be supported.

- MP3 file format will not be supported.

- TIFF and GIF file formats will not be supported.

- Sony's Cybershot movie format will not be supported

PSX will however, feature an internal Ethernet adapter which, initially, will not be compatible with the company's Playstation BB service.
Two models of the PS2 compatible DVD-HDD recorder will be available, the high - end model will have a 250 GB Hard Drive and will cost 99,800 yen (USD 906), while the low - end model with a 160 GB Hard Drive will cost 79,800 yen (USD 725).

the only reason sony has such a big market share is not becuse of the quality of product or technological innovation, its becuase there was no competion. the xbox and even the gc have really put it to sony this time and i dont know if they can handle the pressure. die playstation, the source of all evil poisoning the minds of the mindless consumers who just follow the leader!! wait.. wateva.

I dont see what this has to do with xbox, this is a handheld device, I think it would have more to do with nintendo. Even then we are drawing some pretty big conclusions.

aawis, the PSX is not a handheld device, this has a lot to do with the XBox. the PSP is the portable device.
a PSX is basically a souped up PS2. it has no gaming advantages over the PS2 (not that i know of) but can be used as a digital recorder for ur favourite TV shows and etc since it has a DVD burner, a hardrive and can tune in TV stations. it cetainly can lure EVEN more customers to the Playstaion phenomenon, but it isn't too big a leap for the world of console gaming.
i wouldn't really say the PS2 is leading ONLY b/c it didn't have any competitors. the PS2 succeeded b/c a few reasons:

1. the obvious one being the first Next-Gen console to hit markets (not including the DC) giving it a nearly 2 year lead if u look at the XBox's launch in Nth. America in November 2001.

2. brand awarness. the PS2, although a new product, comes from the original Playstation. b/c the original sold so well, ppl immediately recognised the PS2, so the PS2 can't take all the credit, it has to thank its daddy for a lot of it. Nintendo screwed up in the last generation with many design and decision flaws so they literally handed the market over to Sony, who was a new comer last generation.

3. they really do have a few really nice games. i keep hearing ppl say that the PS2 has some good games, but most of their library is shit. well, i can say, only GCN owners have the right to say that, since they're library is percentage wise much more tipped towards the quality end and not the quantity end. the XBox also has a shit load of dodgy games, you MUST admit that, with some of the worst games of this generation belonging to our platform of choice, which is an embarrassment.
but we buy the consoles we love, for the good games don't we? which is wy we chose the XBox. but i'm just saying, the PS2 also has many good games, such as the FF series, Ico, Gran Turismo series, Virtua Fighter series and a plethora of Japanese games that is both charming and addictive.

i don't know why i typed this much, but i guess when i saw someone attacking one particular system so much, i had to deflect some of it, otherwise some ppl will remain uninformed. Xbox still comes ahead for me despite some of the worst games of all time :P (AKA Bruce Lee, Blood Wake...and Kokuto Chojin...or whatever it's called).
on a rating scale where the far left would be quantity/poor games and the far right be quality/less games, the PS2 would be closest to the far left, with the XBox following closely behind and then the GCN pretty close to the far right. this is only percentage wise though. number wise, i reckon the XBox has far more quality games than the GCN, and nearly equal with a PS2.

Its either a new console or not, there's no halfway. And what about all those bastard sony customers who won't be able to play the slew of new games because the old ps2 isn't fast enough compared to the PSX? Have they just wasted their money? Should they have waited for this to have come out in the first place? If I was Sony customer, I would be in a rage!

Hmmm, if i find some spare poo change, i might get one......but only to tape every simpsons episode, but i will be in hell before i buy a ps2 game, actually maybe dragon ball z 2: tentuki or whatever :D

Sony have gotten way too much profit from the PS2 then they deserve. It was the best console when it came out, but it's rushed, hard to program for design has made it lose market share when the Xbox came out.

Japan is really the only place where the PS2 has a commanding lead. But then the Japanese have loyal followers for Sony. It took years for Japanese to jump ship from Nintendo. I doubt very much they'll embrace an American designed console though.

Sony will have to think about their next console because Microsoft will not become complacent with the next generation.

heh its only a small sacrifice, its other features may still be good enough to have a shitload of buyers i say... and just because they arent gonna get as many features, doesnt mean people wont buy it. ITS ALL ABOUT THE GAMES!!!

me being an owner of a playstation and playstation 2 will know that sony has made some AWESOME games, and will continue to do it. the playstations are more based at rpg's anyways like the FF series (final fantasy) or Suikoden series

and as of yet i havent seen xbox release a killer game like those 2

so i still think that this sony will go ok,
