I think the Gunghalin exchange was officially opened on Wednesday 19th. But if ADSL is really avalable to pair gain victims still remains to be seen. Although, when I applied in the beggining of march, they did say that there was copper at the curb, but my house was too far from the exchange (Mitchell, cause Gunghalin wasn't opened at the time). Here's hoping I am lucky this time around.

BTW, I now get 33.6 connect speeds with my phoneline (was about 53.3kbps on one of those "calculate the connection speed" things) I never had more than 28.8k myself until about last weekend. Maybe this isn't a smoke screen after all... *fingers crossed*

@ Tin Reaper

Don't forget the shovel, since everything is underground in this here parts.

OH, BTW, I also read that Transact expects to be enabled in Gunghalin in August/September.

The other "hope on the horizon" for you guys is the increase in distance from exchange allowed...

Actually an increase in the allowable transmission loss, but the effect is an increase in distance.

KrasH - if you were rejected in March you should check again... new limits came into play end of March - early April.

EDIT: just because there is a new exchange closer doesn't change the exchange you connect to... in the old days it was a physical connection from the house to the exchange... nowadays (as I understand it) there are some points along the way where they can re-route... but it still requires work to do. (not exactly something Telstra is famed for)

A friend Just moved into nicholls this week, checked for ADSL but still no go, hes a little gutted... Told him to keep checking tho.

I'm in Amaroo and have had it for 5 months now...So GM you could just pop round and stare at my medium size pipe(512k)...for a while. hehe (may even allow you to touch):D

"OH, BTW, I also read that Transact expects to be enabled in Gunghalin in August/September."

The transact system is somewhat better than ADSL, as in less dropouts, guarenteed minimum speed and can reach further distances. Works in the same means as ADSL but is somewhat different in terms of compression.

ah yeah but then again transact (well the ISPs) have high prices with low download limits...

Apparently someone was setting up a wireless BB solution near the Amaroo high school for Gungahlin, Anyone know if this happening still or was it a pipe dream? I seem to remember the prices being quite high.

That is so true. I can't get ADSL but it is possible i can get transact because it accepts higher transmission loss. But i dun like transact ISP prices so i am gonna see if i can get telstra to relay the cable in my street because apparently my streets copper lines are dodgy and transact told me this. But Telstra re-laying my streets copper is possibly a pipe-dream.

@ Chainsaw

I know that I am connected to mitchell (crase), but a few months ago telstra were doing alot of "re-cabling" of the suburb I am in. But knowing my luck,my latest adsl request will fail. Atleast in the next year or so that new wireless network standard (forgot the name) will be available. Apparently has a 50km range ;)

It will tell you if your exchange is ADSL enabled (but might be out of date)... but it can't test the distance from your exchange or noise on the line etc.

Basically to prove whether your line can or can't support ADSL you need to apply for it and Telstra will do all the checks and tell you.

You should be able to get it, I live at the other end of kathryn Ave.
Telstra installed the minimux technolgy in most of the RIMs across Amaroo, b4 the new exchange was built,(although they only installed 16 ports in my local rim for 40+ houses or something), Cos you border Amaroo you most likely will have access to the service anyways.

but who knows this is Telstra!

I just did a casual check to see what the crase exchange status was... freaked me out. It has always been 38-40 ports.. Today I checked and it said 511 ports available. Very interesting... My adsl signup status is showing "Alternate Path Search".. Oh well.. Here's hoping for a success after a number of failures..

If you want to test ur line, go to ur local telstra shop and they can do a comprehensive line test that is fairly accurate as it actually tests ur line rather then looking in a database and saying ur exchange is enabled.
