So. . .should I buy an Xbox?
Diablo

It's only like $290 for the console + 1 game now, I have a spare ethernet port on my PC which I could use for Xbox live, my mate has an Xbox and networking them would be fun. . .and I DO have that DVD-burner which I could finally put to good use >_>

What do you reckon? Should I buy it, should I get a PS2 instead, or should I put the money towards my latest uber PC?

errr well xbox is only worth it if you get it modded.

you can put emulators for super nintendo, nintendo 64, atari, capcom, gameboy advance, etc etc.

or you can put all your jpgs/divx/mp3s/whatever into the media player as well.

its just a mini computer. great for a home theatre system - and very noob friendly. even my grandmother could it :)

Well I was definitely planning on doing the 007:AgentUnderFire/MechAssault softmod, but I didn't know that you could run emulators etc. :o

How do you run programs like that? Is there a GUI like Windows or a command line interface or something?

Also, will installing a hard drive void the warranty? I'd definitely like to be able to play my TV and Red vs Blue episodes, etc. on a full screen TV, but don't want to void the warranty because I'm a big nancy boy :P

modding your xbox in anyway voids the warranty. So if your xbox happens to fuck out after 1 week, but you have put a hdd in it, you are screwed. Hell if you just take the case off it you void the warranty.

mmm i love my Dreamcast. I can play snes, nes, master system, megadrive, neogeo, c64, and what ever else you can think of on it and you dont even have to mod it ^_^

Oh yeah, ima play me some virtua tennis tonight *drools*

Buy weed

Being serious though, get an Xbox unless you don't like the controller or want to do a lot of online gaming. The PS2's network adaptor is cheaper to buy and you don't need to pay for an account like you will on the Xbox will after the trial period ends. Xbox has caught up with PS2 in the area of good games, get Mortal Kombat 5, and then 6 when it comes out at the end of the year. :D

im not sure you even need to use any hardware anymore, but just use some software to 'mod' it..but i'd still go for the xbox unmodded anyway -

take a look at gamespot.com for a complete list of every game coming out/already out on each console and see for yourself.

i'd get one for HL2, halo 2 among others - people forgot to mention that the xbox is worthwhile lanning too...(bring a small tv/monitor converter lol)

I bought an Xbox last week. Gonna get it modded soon, and add a larger hard drive. Then just copy whatever games I like onto the hard drive. Then put in some divxs, mp3's etc. Certainly is a usefull tool. I also have a PS2, but thats only really used for Fifa 2004 and thats about it. On the Xbox I'm currently playing Project Gothem 2 (not bad at all), V8 Supercars 2 (kills the first one, can't wait for the PC version), 007: Everything or Nothing (great atmosphere and pretty damn good), Halo (not bad in multiplayer) and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 (which is pretty damn addictive).

Does anybody know where you can buy modchips in Australia? I'm interested in the X-ecutor 2.3b lite plus.

(and no, don't give me any shit about copyright infringement -- modchips themselves are perfectly legal)

PS And sifnt the silver and black Xbox!

ive an idea

save the 300 dollars on an X-box, you should, as a "gamer" have a decent PC that can most games, including those that come out for the x-box, which appear on the PC anyway.

Save the money on the possible modchip as well

so far you've saved about 300 bucks

hmm, go spend it on a gym membership

Found this Australian site that sells the chip I'm after. It costs $100, but frankly, it's worth it to not have to solder anything.

http://www.pxmods.com/

So far, I'm looking at $238 for the console + $99 for the chip + $138 for a 120GB IDE drive, or $475 total. I can afford that (I already have a gym membership which I use 3 times a week :P ), but I'm worried that apart from playing Xbox games, there's nothing a modded Xbox can do that a shuttle PC can't do better. The portability + RF TV-out are the only major benefits I can see, and those don't really justify the cost IMO.

Oh well, I'll keep thinking about it. It would definitely be cool to have. . . :)

RF out isn't a decider... heaps of video cards have it, and I wouldn't mind betting you can find a mini mobo with it as well.

Some of the things the X-Box does have going for it are - you know the game will play, no stuffing around, no tweaking... and price - you could build a PC that had similar capability, and similar package size - but it would probably cost more. (it should also do a lot more)

EDIT: Personal opinion - Wouldn't bother with an X-Box. My PC does pretty much what I want. (and I have limited discretionary income - ie I have "better" things to spend my money on - or so my wife tells me)

It's a pleasure before you even drink it. It comes in a satin lined box for starters, has its own booklet about the drink, and has its own serial number allocated to the bottle.

Drinking it is amazing. The consistancy is smoother than any other spirits I have ever had, just imagine what drinking mercury would be like and that's as close to the real thing as you can imagine. It is very strong aswell (43%) so it has a real kick to it, but you only get that hit 1 sec after it goes down, so you can swirl it in your mouth for ages and only after you swallow do you feel the heat. It's not something that I will go and buy everytime I run out or anything, but I have always wanted to own a really expensive bottle of alcahol, and I have no regrets.

Revelation: Blue Label may be the best blended whisky out there... but it is blended.

Try a single malt... some of the single malts at half the price of Blue Label are better.

And you really need to shop Duty Free when you're buying that stuff.

For the answer to this question and many more, check out
http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/

Most modchip retailers sell their products with the Linux (Cromwell) BIOS flashed onto them, because this is a perfectly legitimate product. Only when the end-user flashes the chip with modified Microsoft code do any questions of legality arise. Incidentally, this is when you are able to do all the cool stuff like play games from HDD etc.

But that's all I'm going to say on that subject. I'm interested in modchips for Linux/development purposes.

chainsaw: single malts are also "one of the foulest drinks imaginable". very acquired taste apparently, tho snobbish as hell once you get used to them. like cigars.

rev: comparing it to mercury may not have been the best idea... its poisonous for a start and only smooth insofar as any liquid is smooth. kudos for the purchase tho ^_^.

ooi, what do these happy happy modchips actually do? im guessing able to run modified OS/games on an xbox, but i couldnt find any info on what the chip actually did on that site... not that i looked very hard, mind u. anyone care to enlighten me?

Every piece of software, be it a game, demo CD, or service like Xbox Live, must be digitally signed by Microsoft in order to be run on stock Xbox.

Modchips allow the Xbox to run an alternative bios which removes these checks, allowing us to run homebrew apps as well as do other stuff like installing bigger hard drives. These homebrew apps are what allow you to play a game off the hard drive, play .mp3, .mpeg, divx and xvid files, and other cool stuff.

Another take on what Diablo isn't saying is...

The sale of devices (mod chips) designed to circumvent copy protection is illegal. (The precedent was the Playstation case - on appeal)

The people selling THESE chips are providing them so you can run Linux on your X-Box. (this is legal)

If you later change that mod chip to circumvent copy protection - that is not legally attributable to the seller of the chip. (not that any of you would do that)

As for whisky - I hate it all... but my father, wife and brother-in-law are all lovers of the water of life... and they all prefer single malts when they can afford them.

As for the acquired taste comment... at the price of blue label you can afford a lot of single malt so you CAN acquire the taste.

EDIT: the techie analogy would be; spending money on the ABSOLUTE BEST Celeron... or spending the same money on a middling AMD processor.

My parents let me have some of the $600 bottle of red wine they bought for their 25th wedding anniversary. Sure it was nice, but I couldn't see how it was much better than a $29.95 bottle you can get at the shops. Oh well, I guess I'm just an unrefined bogan :D

No comment on the XBox mod debate other than I like the Linux mods especially the streaming video bit.. awesome multimedia TV machine for 237 bucks at Tricky Dickies...
On the whisky issue I must say I'm a big fan but Chaisaw is right it is an acquired taste and there is absolutely no way in hell that I'd pay 300 bucks for a bottle of anything except if it's filled with gold or platinum maybe.... I've had some blue label and yeah it is nice but there are brands just as nice around for less money...

Picked up the latest Atomic mag today... three and a bit pages on modding consoles, mainly dealing with the XBox.

Includes some info about the XCID (unique ID) and how a modded XBox can be banned from Live! - "sources within MS have hinted" that they can detect mods even when modchip is switched off...

All-in-all a pretty good, and timely, article.
